Prayer before meals

Assalamu Alaikum brothers and sisters

Should muslims say a prayer before eating a meal?  Somewhat like a blessing?  If so then what would be said?  Anyone who has any idea please let me know what you think.  If it is not neccessary then is it okay?

One other question I have is what is dua?  I hear people talk about it, but I really don't understand what it is for sure.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Salam,
Aimee

Assalaamu alaikum,

Before eating or drinking (or before doing anything else) say bismillah (in the name of Allah) as mentioned in the following hadith:

The Messenger of Allah [saw] said: O my son! Invoke the name of Allah [say: Bismillãh], eat with your right hand, and eat of that which is on your side [of the platter being shared]

Or you can learn this longer dua:

allahumma baarik lanaa feemaa razaqtanaa wa qinaa adhaaban naar bismillaah

O Allah! Bless (the food) You Provided to us and save us from the punishment of the hellfire. In the name of Allah.

[This is from Selected Prayers by Jamal Badawi]

Dua means supplication where we ask Allah for his help and blessing.

Wasalaam.

Assalamu Alaium Aimee!
nice to see you here again! If you want more detail on Dua take a look at the last couple of posts in my question and answer thread. I didn't know how to do it either until I asked tha brothers and sisters here and Alhamdulillah I have been doing it now all the time.

Before eating or drinking I try to always remember to say "Bismillah". In fact before doing anything (starting the car, washing my hands etc).

Please give us an update on your current situation or instant message me if you want!

wasalaam
