| As-Salam Alaikum sisters I am a new Muslim and I had a question regarding proper dress in Islam. I do wear the hijab (scarf) but I am undecisive about the jilbab (coat-like garment). Is it necessary to wear a jilbab or an abaya or can I wear baggy like pants and long skirts. Am I doing something wrong if I do not wear a jilbab. Walaikum-Salam sister leyla |

| salaam sister, This has been discussed many times here before. If you look in the Akhwat cafe's back pages, try looking at threads that have "hijab" in their titles you will find many. Suffice it to say there is a difference of opinion over what actually constitues the "hijab". Some say you just need to cover everything but your hands face and feet, others say you should wear niqab, others say jilbab/abaya. So it would be better if you consulted your local Imam or someone knowledgable in your community to ask inshallah :) wsalaam wrt |
