The Lakers vs. The Spurs

The Sixers vs. The Bucks

It's down to 4 teams.  The 4 best teams in the world!

My predictions:

Spurs in 7
Bucks in 7

Sorry princess.  Iverson is great.  But he and the Sixers can't handle the Big Three of Milwaukee.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Even after tonight, you still dare to predict the Spurs over the Lakers!  What games have you been watching?  My boy Shaq said it best when he commented on how the Spurs were giving them all they had, and the lead was still only 10 pts.  That's not much to make up.

Lakers in 6.

Bucks in 7.

Arsalan, you still think the Spurs can win it in 7 games?  They would have to beat the Lakers 4 out of 5 games.  3 of which would be on the Lakers own floor.  I think I was wrong about the Lakers winning in 5.  They will utterly humiliate the Spurs and win in 4, insha'Allah.  Its over, I watched the Spurs players comments before the game, saying they had to win game 2 or it was over.  They have admitted defeat. :)   The Spurs aren't champions, the Lakers are the world champs. :)  The Spurs proved they can't handle the Lakers.  As soon as the Lakers turned up the defence the game was over.

As for the Bucks and 76ers game (doesn't much matter, these are lousy teams), the Bucks should win it in 6.
My boy Shaq
Haha!  You sound like you know him intimately since ages!

Anyway

Zahir, face it.  Shaq is an idiot.  Most of the time he doesn't know what he's talking about.  He's the biggest snob I've ever seen.  Last game they showed a footage of Shaq in his high school years.  His high school team won the championship with him, and they asked him what he thought made the difference that year and took them to the level of champions.  His reply: "It was *me*!  I basically took control and made sure we'd win!"  (Or something to that effect!)

Not much has changed since then!  The guy dares to call San Antonio a "WNBA team" and still can't score against them!  Duncan has pretty much destroyed him single-handedly (Robinson had sat out most of the time in both games).
the Spurs were giving them all they had, and the lead was still only 10 pts
This is just wack!  This is the Conference Finals.  The best two teams in the NBA.  What does he expect?  The Spurs to blow them out?  If he thinks they're so good, why don't *they* blow them out instead of winning only by single digits?  Is he trying to say the Lakers weren't giving it all they had upto that point?  If that's the case, then they don't deserve to win the championship!  Champions play hard - every minute of the game.  That's what the Bulls did.  That's what Magic and Bird did.  This just goes on to show how the Lakers are *still* an immature, cocky team.

The series is still not over.  May the best team win.

In all fairness the Lakers should have won game 2 by double digits (10 points), but Tim Duncan hit a 3 pointer as regulation was ending (a pretty lucky shot).   Well Lakers won game 1 by double digits, 14 points.   When a team like the Spurs lose by double digits at home, thats just humiliation. :)

Princess I'm glad you agree that the Spurs will lose in 4 games. :)

Robinson has an A-game?  Shaq aka the Big Aristotle was right all along.  He needs to play in the WNBA.  At his size and strength (look at those arms!) he needs to be playing MUCH better.  He's a softy and everyone knows it.

D. Anderson STOP Kobe!?!?  Nobody in the league today can stop Kobe, period.  At least not one guy on his own, espec. not Anderson.

My Predictions

Sixers in 7
Lakers in 4

In the Champs:

Lakers in 7

I'm a Sixers fan myself, but the Lakers are CLEANIN up yo...  Even I can recognize...

But--even the Lakers fans out there HAVE to admit that the final Philly game in the playoffs was a BEAST.  Raptors down by one, less than 3 seconds remaining, Carter gets the ball, the buzzer sounds, and bam, he misses.  Philly goes on to the finals..  I know some people who actually got to go to the game! :o

If, however, Philly stays on top of their game, I think they have a chance against the Lakers.  Did Kobe really just marry a High school grad?? I know the brother is about my age, but STILL...  Anyways, so I change my original prediction for the championship games.  Its either going to be:  Lakers in 5 or Sixers in 7.

Hopefully the latter...Insha'Allah.  Either way the spurs and the bucks are gone.  Insha'Allah.

Take Care,

Its about time someone recognizes, well said.  Princess be sure and take notes, you too Arsalan. ;)

I think it would be nice if the Lakers meet the Sixers in the finals.  Look what we have gone through on the board.  Rashid's Sacramento Kings were swept by the Lakers.  Arsalan's Spurs were swept (I mean are about to be, insha'Allah) by the Lakers.  Do you see the pattern developing here?  Shaq is mad, after losing the MVP contest and he will get his revenge.
ps-  I'll the first to admit-- I ain't got NO game.  I can't even play horse :(
Did you know that you can improve your horse game (shooting baskets) without even going on the court?  There was a study done for 30 days with 3 groups.  One group shot baskets at the start and then at the end of 30 days and their results were recorded.  The second group shot baskets at the start and every day for 30 days, 30 mins. each day.  They had improved their shooting percentage.  The last group shot baskets at the start and every day for 30 days they imagined they were shooting and making baskets for 30 days.  Their shooting percentage improved by the same amount!!!

Conclusion, its all in the mind and practice makes perfect. ;)

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!  I can't believe today's game!  It's scary and frustrating.  I KNOW Philly has the ability to beat Milwaukee and their trash-talking coach.
  Okay, I've vented.
Even though I am a die hard Philly fan (my brother went to game 7 of the Toronto-Philly game, he said it was amazing after they won, everybody screaming, yelling, running).  But I have to say, in all honesty, that the Lakers are going to sweep.  If they're lucky, Philly will be able to get one game in, but that's just a maybe.  I feel that if it was SA that comes out of the West (yeah right), then Philly would have a really good chance of beating them.  But the Lakers are just way too much* (see footnote).

Take care,

The San Antonio Spurs were utterly humiliated today, losing by 39 points to the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers.  39 points!!!!!!!!

That has to be one of the biggest embarassments ever in the NBA.  You could see that the Spurs players were very sad (Arsalan is probably so overcome with grief he is speechless  ;) ).  There isn't a whole lot to say about the Spurs other then, Later Losers .

I wonder if Arsalan will go into hiding and not appear on this thread again? ???  I wouldn't blame him, heheheheheh.

The only question remains is can the Lakers be the first team in NBA history to have a 15-0 record in the playoffs?  If the Lakers don't suffer any injuries then that should be a really easy accomplishment.

I still think Iverson is out of control, he sort of reminds me of a little more matured (not much though) Jason Williams.  He didn't deserve the MVP award at all.  The award needed to go to someone good like Kobe or Shaq.  But we'll see what happens in the finals.  :)  I'm looking forward to it.

Allen Iverson was off. Aaron McKie missed two crucial free throws. So, it was up to the Sixers guard with a stress fracture in his ankle to hit the game-winner. Eric Snow was 7-of-9 from the floor and scored 18 points as the Sixers beat the Bucks in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals 89-88 on Wednesday. The Sixers can earn a trip to the NBA Finals by winning Game 6 in Milwaukee on Friday.

Assalamu Alaikum,

We had company over last night so I missed the game, but I heard it was awesome.  Here's what I think:  If the Bucks make to the finals, the Lakers will sweep, no question.  If the Sixers make it (Insha'Allah!), the Lakers will *win* most likely--but not sweep. If the Bucks make it to the finals, I root for the Lakers! I'm kinda into this Kobe-Shaq gladiator tag team thing they got going on.  But I still kind of hope they don't sweep.

Just to back track a little, princess---our Basketball post was cemented into the ground and it was still blown away! Twice!    WHAAAAAAAAAAT'S UUUUUUUP!!!!!!!!! PPPHHHHIIIILLLLYYYY IINN DA HOUSE!!!!!
I was at the game, and let me tell you, it was awesome!!!!  It was so loud at the end you coudn't even hear the speaker system or the crazy fireworks that were going on.  People were hugging each other, and bumping into each other.  Random people just come up to you and hug you and give you five, it was like post-Eid celebration with a PHILLY twist. :)
Then after the game we went (snuck) down to where the players park their cars.  And we talked to Snow, Mutumobo, Rodney Buford, Raja Bell and of course, the main man, Iverson.  He talked to us while he sat in his phat Bentley.  We told Iverson and Buford to read the Qur'an, but they just smiled and brushed it off.  No harm no foul ;).
We also saw Cuttino Mobley there, as well as all these Eagles guys, like Donovan McNabb and a drunk, yet funny Duece Staley.
The entire city of Philadelphia has gone crazy. People are honking all over the place, screaming and yelling.  It's like we've won the finals already.  And I'm changing my picks now:

Lakers vs. Philadelphia:

Lakers in 6.

Got to give Philadelphia more credit, I think they have the capability of stopping the Lakers at least twice inshaa Allah.

Just thought I'd share today's experience.

As for Iverson, he's allright...mad ghetto.  He's actually kind of funny.  He was smiling and laughing.  He was the only player that actually stuck around and went back to meet the fans.  We wanted to see McKie, but I think we missed him or something.  And Mutumbo is one taaaaaaaaallll brother!!  But Iverson is cool, and in my opinion he deserves the MVP award hands down.  He's matured as a player so much since he first came here to Philly.  We met his mom too, she's very...ummm...loud to say the least. :).

Lakers in  5.

Iverson is awesome, but he is yet to beat a team by himself.  Just look at game 7.  Mutombo's  contribution  cannot be overlooked. 23 pts, 19 boards, 7 blocks!!

This series:

Mutombo won't be a big enough threat.  He can't linger around the paint waiting for Kobe to drive so he can block his shot.  He's got his hands full with the Big Aristotle.

If Kobe is not guarding Iverson, he will be guarding McKie, and he is important to  the sixers' success.  No doubt, Kobe will shut him down.

[deep]  Apparently teams with 2 monster players cannot dominate for more than a year or two.  Somebody always gets greedy and wants to take the fame and glory all for themselves.  Kobe and Shaq?? Cocky? :o Nooo...

Am I the only one thinking a Laker sweep here? ???  Zil, you aren't backing me up on a sweep?

Interesting article Nazia.  I don't know, we'll see what happens in the future.  The key is teamwork.  I think Kobe realizes that now.  I always thought Magic and Kareem were 2 super stars, and that it wasn't Magic's team, but rather him and Kareem.  If I remember correctly, Kareem was even captain of the team.

Maybe all the internal feuding wasn't real?  Check this out:

does kareem cover his awrah while playing basket ball? how about the rest of them?
a lot of muslim groups wasted a lot of time here getting awrah covering uniforms for muslim female police men and female muslim soldiers/sailers,
are there any people in america who have time on there hands to lobby to get awrah covering uniforms for the NBA etc.

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Here are my observations of the game:

1). Iverson was shut down completely by Tyrone Lue, once the Lakers put Lue on him instead of Fisher and Kobe.  When asked about that, he cried, I mean complained that Lue held him (poor sportsmanship).

2). The game was ultimately decided in OT when Lue took an ill advised shot, missed, and thus left his man (Iverson) wide open for a 3.  That's a 5 point switch right there.

3). The real hero for the Sixers was not Iverson but Mutombo's defense and blocking shots capabilities.  As soon as Mutombo got into foul trouble the Lakers got back into the game.  What the Lakers need to do is get the ball into Shaq and have him try and pound the ball in more, so Mutombo can pick up fouls.

4). Shaq missed 12 free throws in the game, while Philly missed just one free throw the whole game in regulation, that's an 11 point differential right there.

5).  The Lakers came out with a lot of energy, after the initial minute or two and built up a 13 point lead, but then ran out of energy, perhaps because of the 10 days of rest.  The Lakers showed that kind of intensity against San Antonio for the entire 48 minutes of game 3 as the Lakers went on to blow out San Antonio by 39 points.

Its VERY disappointing that the Lakers won't sweep.  In fact its shocking.  I'm stunned.

That was a truly wonderful game.
You know what bothers me the most?? The Lakers' pride and arrogance (not just the players, the fans too).

Their pride will eventually lead them to their demise.
We saw the same thing with Dennis Rodman a few years back when he declared that the NBA should just give the Bulls the title before the season was over.
Shaq knows he isnt all that, the dude thinks he can rap and act.."Shaq, don't quit your day job man",..it'll just take some time before everyone else realizes it.

I was impressed with Lue's performance. I was annoyed with Snow's final shot in the last few seconds of the fourth quarter. He should have thought about throwing the ball to someone other than the heavily-guarded Iverson. The sixers were just asking to go overtime by making such a poor decsion.
I just loved it when Iverson shut the hyped LA crowd it. That was beautiful.
Both of the teams are very well matched and this series will be incredibly intense.

sheesh..just swallow your pride.
Phil Jackson is truly talented..it upsets me that he left chicago..but what can i say..there's no more loyalty..it's all about the money and the prestige.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Sorry Fahad and Princess, but be prepared for disappointment.  If anything you saw tonight what is to come for your beloved Sixers.  The first game was a fluke.  Think about this.  In Game 1, The Sixers basically gave the Lakers all they had.  And they still barely won.  Iverson was great, Mutombo was good, what more do you want?  Don't forget, Kobe played horrible.  Think about it, how many times have you seen him play that bad?  And they still barely won.  I was thinking to myself after game 1, "Shaq brought his game, just think what will happen when Kobe does too.  They'll be unstoppable".  And don't forget about my man Fisher and the other role players on the team.  Still holding on to my prediction, Lakers in 5.  I thought the Lakers would lose game 3 or 4, but the one they chose to lose was game 1.  That's fine with me, they'll still be the ones carrying the hardware at the end of the series.

Sixers play good at home(Masha'Allah)...don't underestimate the Philly fans--or the Philly team.  I think the next game will be Philly's, INSHA'ALLAH...  I do think however, that Philly needed to win this game to ensure victory.  They've always lost atleast one home game during the post season--and if that happens again,  no doubt it will be tough to win another one in LA.  But I think they can do it, Insha'Allah... They missed a lot of shots tonite--a lot of free throws, Insha'Allah it won't happen again... :)

The Lakers won and gave the Sixers more then they could handle.  I was a little disappointed with the Lakers play in the middle of the 4th quarter, as they made some very poor decision making (i.e. wild shots, turn overs (especially Kobe's that caused Shaq to get foul #5 and turn things around)) but other then that, the Lakers were finally playing Laker basketball in the end of the 3rd quarter and part of the 4th quarter.  They were executing very well.

Shaq was so dominating as he overpowered everyone and had an incredible night.  There is no room for mistakes, and the Lakers can not get careless.  They have to go in and do a good job of executing the plays, getting the ball down low to Shaq.

Fisher finally played some better defense on Iverson, as he was a little slow in game 1 (due to the rest of 10 days).  However I thought the real defense came in when Kobe played Iverson, and basically let him drive in, where Iverson faced Shaq at the basket.
Iverson was stuffed so many times and ended up on the floor so many times, it was reminiscent of a 3 stooges routine. :)

We'll never know who started it, although Iverson being the poor sportthat he is, complained to the referee that Kobe started it.  One only has to look at game 1 where Iverson stepped over Tyronne Lue for bad sportsmanship.  In fact in this game Iverson received a technical foul for complaining too much about calls.

I'm not worried about home court advantage being any sort of factor.  I know the Lakers play very well on the road.

The other day I heard Mutombo describe himself as being a great player.  :barf:  Shaq showed him how a good player is supposed to play.  It was nice to see. :)

Insha'Allah the Lakers will win the next one by 20+ points.

Shaq tore it up in game 2!  The only reason why LA lost game 1 is cuz they were off for 10 days.  They were rusty, ya know.  It's a shame that they didn't win game 1 cuz we would of all loved to see a sweep, right?  But I predict either LA will win the next 3 games in Philly or purposely lose one so they can celebrate in they home town!

Mutombo should get an award for best acting.  He had so many flops. :)  But he did a good job of scoring.  The 2nd quarter of the game was very good, as the Lakers were executing their plays, and shots were going in.  In the 3rd and 4th quarter is when things fell apart and the Lakers were getting away from the game plan.  Also you could see that Shaq was getting frustrated with the officiating and Kobe took some ill advised shots.

In game 4 I look forward to watching the Lakers execute better and maintain their poise, insha'Allah.

as-Salaamu 'Alaykum,
Admittedly, I am quite disappointed.  Not in the fact that we are playing a team that is too overpowering, 'cause that's not true.  I put the Philadelphia losses like this:  the blame goes on Philadelphia for not having everybody step up, and I give less credit to the Lakers game.  Mainly because I know Philadelphia can beat the Lakers.  The last two games have proven that well.  Close loses.  This past game (Game 4) was just sad.  Nobody stepped up.
I'll be the first to admit that in order for Philadelphia to beat L.A. they need to play an almost perfect game.  They've had the opportunities to win in the past two games, but in this game they made all kinds of crazy mistakes.  These are both phenomenal teams, and in the finals both teams have to play amazing games.  So far the Lakers have given clutch plays when needed, Philadelphia hasn't.  And in my opinion, the biggest element of basketball that Philadelphia is lacking is clutch peformances.  Eric Snow is the only clutch player on that team, and maybe Mutumbo and Iverson coming in second, albeit a far one.
In conclusion, I know Philadelphia has the ability to win, and I stick to my previous prediction of Lakers in 6.

Take care,

Zubaid

Sixers have no choice but to pitch perfect game
By Wayne Drehs
ESPN.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia 76ers center Matt Geiger has been elbowed, shoved and hip-checked by Shaquille O'Neal throughout the NBA Finals. He has had his shot blocked into the third row of seats. He has watched passes slip through his hands and sail out of bounds.

But ask Geiger what's been most frustrating for him and he quickly replies, "Watching film."

Laying bricks
Allen Iverson scored 35 points Wednesday but shot just 12-of-30 from the floor. Iverson is shooting just under 39 percent from the floor in this postseason. That is the second-worst shooting performance of all-time for any player who averaged 30 or more points per game in one playoff year. Iverson has made just 52 of his 130 shots in the Finals.
Year, Player  Pct.  PPG
'49 George Mikan  38.3  31.3
'01 Allen Iverson  38.6  32.7
'66 Rick Barry  40.3  34.7
'65 Oscar Robertson  40.8  31.8
'61 E. Baylor  43.8  38.6
'64 Jerry West  44.2  40.6

There, Geiger and the rest of his teammates realize just how far they are from competing with the Lakers. They see O'Neal all but score at will in the post. They see themselves doubling O'Neal, only to watch him find an open teammate for a 3-pointer. They see their inability to score on offense.

And they see that it might take nothing less than a perfect game for them to stay alive.

"Whatever you want to call it, it better be much better than we have been playing," Geiger said. "I think we make too many mental errors. That team is too good to miss that many free throws and allow that many slashing layups and open 3's."

The film study has been just as trying for coach Larry Brown, who must throw his hands into the air and wonder "What next?" after watching role players Ron Harper, Brian Shaw, Robert Horry and Tyronn Lue deliver the crushing blows in Game 4.

"When I watched the game," Brown said, "I'm thinking, 'God, if Harper's gonna make jump shots, and Horry is going to go 3-for-3 from 3-point land, and Lue's gonna make two 3's, and Brian Shaw's gonna make a killer 3, then Shaq's Shaq and Kobe's Kobe, how we gonna win?' I'd say there'd be no chance."

It's hardly the David vs. Goliath fire that the Sixers were breathing after their shocking 107-101 overtime victory in Game 1. In that game, Allen Iverson scored 48 points, the Philly bench chipped in 29 and the Lakers looked beatable, turning the ball over 19 times and shooting a mediocre 44 percent from the floor.

But what a difference reality makes. Though the Sixers hung around in Games 2 and 3, they couldn't make the big shots when they counted, in part because of the effort it took to stay in the game. And then came the debacle that was Game 4, in which Iverson shot a miserable 12-of-30 and the Lakers got significant contributions from nine players in blowing out the Sixers.

So does it take a perfect game?

“ Maybe if we could get out to a significant lead for a change, we can start to put some of the pressure on them and then see how they respond." ”
 — Eric Snow, Sixers guard

"At least near-perfect, especially if we are going to keep getting down by so many," said Sixers guard Eric Snow. "When that happens, they start getting in their comfort zone and then they knock down all of their open shots. Maybe if we could get out to a significant lead for a change, we can start to put some of the pressure on them and then see how they respond."

Sixers guard Aaron McKie agrees, noting that getting behind early in games has caused the Sixers to make additional costly mistakes they hardly need.

"Every little mistake that you make at that point is really going to be magnified because you almost have to play perfect, especially against a team like the Lakers, to try to fight your way back in the game," McKie said. "And we can't afford to do that."

Because of those mistakes, reserve center Todd MacCulloch is unsure if Philadelphia is capable of perfection.

"We need to play as close to a perfect game now, but we haven't played any perfect games all season," MacCulloch said. "With the way we've shot the ball, it hasn't been near perfect, but with our defense, we've been able to make certain mistakes. Against a championship-caliber team, though, you can't shoot poorly and put as much pressure as we do on our defense."

Though the shooting struggles of Iverson have hurt the Sixers, nothing has been more troubling than the play of O'Neal, who not only has had his way under the basket, but has also managed to find the open man when double-teamed. In L.A.'s three wins, O'Neal has a combined 17 assists.

"It's not like were triple-teaming him. We're only sending two guys and we're just doing a horrible job of rotating," Geiger said. "It's one thing if he were to kick it out, then they threw a pass, and another pass and another pass and then we had a guy flying at a shooter who just makes it. But for Shaq just to stand there and pick us apart ... we wouldn't have gotten here if our defense was that poor."

Defensively, the Lakers have found a way to slow the elusive Iverson, denying him the ball on numerous possessions and forcing him to fight through layers of their defense on others.

The league MVP is shooting just 40 percent from the field in the series, 28.6 percent from 3-point range. His 1.08 points-per-shot average is the third lowest among the 10 starters for both teams. And he's shooting just under 30 percent in the first quarter.

Iverson blames O'Neal, the most menacing of presences inside the paint.

"You got a guy that big just standing in the middle. He's clogging up the whole area," Iverson said. "Not much you can do about that. It kind of keeps people shooting outside. He's just so disruptive."

And if the Sixers don't figure it out anytime soon, they will be heading home for the summer.

"I'm looking forward to getting married this summer, but I can wait for it to come," Iverson said. "Believe me."

He might not have much of a choice.

Mabrook yaa Bhaloo.  The Lakers win it again, for the 2nd time.  It must be sweet for ya :)

Just one question:

Where was Kobe when the championship and MVP trophies were being awarded?  He was shown in a separate room all alone, right after the interview with Phil Jackson and Shaq.  And then, you couldn't even hear what he had to say because of the messed up audio system.

Assalamu Alaikum,

Wow, what a game.  I don't know what happened in the 4th quarter...It just fell apart for the Sixers.  Well anyways, the Lakers are a good---great team.  No doubt.  I had issues with a few of the players...but, who doesn't right? ;)  Shaq beasted as usual...Fisher and his three pointers...I liked how ALL of their team members were contributing so much--it didn't seem like the Shaq-Kobe team I once thought it was.  I thought it was nice how Mutumbo got a standing O when he fouled out.  I wish he was Muslim.  I was wondering the same thing about Kobe!  Where was he during the interview?  I mean, we all know he didn't do that hot this series..but he is still part of the team!

Anyways, Shaq did deserve his MVP for the series...brother was unstoppable once he got the ball.

Anyways, good job Lakers--great playoff season!

Take Care!

WOOO HOOOOO!!!!! THE LAKERS WON :) :) :)
I gotta admit though, they deserved it.  They created history with their
winnings!

AI and the Sixers had a good run, if they weren't so injured, it would have been
fun.

But all in all, you gotta admit, the LAKERS deserve to be the CHAMPIONS!!!! :)
YAY!!!!!!!!
NS
Lakers are the World Champions Again!!!

Lakers went 15-1 in the playoffs, the best performance ever by a team in the history of the NBA.  It was truly incredible.  Its amazing that they won all 3 games at Philly also.  The last two games by very large margins.

I was listening to all the players reactions after the game, and they all acted with professionalism with the exception of Iverson who didn't give an interview.  They said he had tears in his eyes.  He probably felt really sad.

The dynasty has begun.  There isn't a team that can beat the Lakers next year.  You have to stop Shaq, and no one is big enough to do the job.

All good things come to an end!  And so must the NBA 2001 season.  I hereby lock this thread (it's already 6 pages!)

Wassalamu alaikum :)
