Al-Awda Refugee Support Committee's Lebanon Internship Programs
Please read on for more information

There are a number of grassroots NGOs in Lebanon working with Palestinian  refugees, particularly youth in the refugee community. Despite limited staff and resources, these organizations are doing a valiant job at meeting the needs of Palestinian youth and helping to develop their potential. A number of these organizations have expressed their desire for interns in order to  help them staff and develop certain projects. They are also
very interested in having those outside of the region come and learn about life in the
refugee camps and the plight of Palestinian refugees there so that others may learn about their difficult situation.

Currently there are two organizations looking for interns:

 1. Al-Jana: Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts (www.oneworld.org/al-jana)
AL-JANA works to impart skills, instill self-confidence and to motivate children and youth to assume an active role in re-establishing their own and their community's sense of self-worth and identity. Through a proactive creative pedagogical approach and techniques that equip our youth with skills such as reading, research, critical thinking, imaginative problem-solving, effective interpersonal communication, and creative expression.  Skills that will enable them to deal with present difficulties and successfully meet their future challenges.

They are in need for two types of interns:

 · Artists and filmmakers who can develop programs for youth in the arts.
Interns in this category could come any time of the year for any length of time.

 · Interns to teach English and/or computer skills. Interns in this group would be most useful in the summer.

Al-Jana can arrange for interns to be housed with a refugee family

 2. Association Najdeh
 (http://almashriq.hiof.no/lebanon/300/360/362/najdeh/)
Established in 1978, Association Najdeh is an independent registered Lebanese NGO that works in and around the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Najdeh's core aim is to empower women, the most disadvantaged element of the Palestinian refugee community, with the tools necessary to have a more prominent role in their community. Women, by becoming more productive and self-reliant, contribute concretely to a lasting development of the overall Palestinian refugee community in Lebanon.

Intern will assist in forming a package for lobbying on Palestinian rights and another package for fundraising purposes (for Assoc. Najdeh).  The packages would include leaflets, fact sheets, photos, and relevant case studies. We will supervise and facilitate the related activity.

It is essential that the selected person speaks Arabic, in order to work independently. Moreover, the candidate should be open to visiting refugee camps.

Al-Najdeh can assist in securing a room in a dorm where the rent will be 100-150 US$ per month.
