The Arab and Islamic world is preparing to roundly condemn Israel in a meeting of Muslim foreign ministers in Qatar this weekend.

But on Tuesday it was reported that key Gulf foreign ministers would boycott the meeting due to the continued alleged presence in Qatar of an Israeli trade office.

There has also been confusion over the meaning of last Saturday's decision by the Arab League to sever political ties with Israel.

Relations maintained

Middle Eastern politics have always been hard to decipher, but these days, as the Arab world struggles to find a robust common policy, Arab diplomacy is becoming more confused than ever.

Israel has been condemned for its use of warplanes

The 22-nation Arab League announced with great fanfare that it was breaking off all political contact with Israel - yet Egypt and Jordan have maintained full diplomatic relations.

The Israeli ambassador to Cairo, Zvi Mazel, remains firmly in his place and he says he is still trying to work out what the Arab League's announcement means.

The media were told the break-off in political contacts meant no more mediation by Arab countries between Israel and the Palestinians, until Israel stopped attacking them.

Little change

But since then, Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has been quoted as saying his country remains engaged in trying to find a way out of the current violence.

In other words, little has changed in practice.

Egyptian President Mubarak says diplomacy will continue

There looks set to be more ambiguity when foreign ministers from more than 40 Muslim nations are due to converge on Qatar to support the Palestinians. It is an emergency meeting called by Qatar's ruling Emir - yet his government has failed to allay rumours that Qatar itself is still hosting an Israeli trade mission.

The rumours are strong enough for key Gulf foreign ministers to be reportedly steering clear of the meeting.

All of this leaves the impression that the Arab world cannot find or, stick to, a common approach to Israel.

Moderate Arab states may publicly back a tough line but in private they have no wish to upset Israel's ally, the US.

In the words of one political commentator, $2bn of aid a year to Egypt buys a lot of influence.

I always get a chill in my bones when I remember the Crusades, man if the Jews got slaughtered by Hitler, we Muslims surely got slain by the Crusaders, there was so much rape and killing, that I've heard streets were flowing with blood.

I also think purely my own opionin that Imam Mehdi may appear or arrive in our time. Man its gonna be tough.

imam hamza yusuf was asked this question and he said that a scholar was asked this in the first muslim millenium because people thought the world would be ending soon

and the scholar said there was a tradition passed down by the sahabi that the yahood had been granted 1 day and the muslims would be granted 1 1/2 days ( a day is 1000 years) so it could be pretty soon
now ..and allah ho alim...because the muslims ARE like a plate of food and everybody is gathering around from all the corners of the earth to take a bite..inshallah this ummah will granted a large bone for them to choke on!
