Is this possible?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.

Since we have so many Muslim brothers, (I don't know about sisters) in prison, is it possible for a sister (namely, Me!) to initiate contact with them solely for the purpose of sending them Islamic articles, and/or gifts?

Since they don't have the opportunity to attend Khutbahs, lectures, etc. like we sometimes do here on the *outside*, I still feel like they should be able to have access to what we do.

Kufi caps, Quran's, prayer rugs,...these are all things that come easily to us. But what about OUR brothers/sisters on the inside?

This is really important to me and I WANT to send some of these items. How would I do it? Is it possible for me to contact them? If it is unadvisable for me to do it, than who can do it for me?

Wa'assalam,

Serena

As for your question, here is my feeble answer

Lets put it this way if there are brothers in Prison then perhaps you could contact the Governer of the prison and ask him/her to give the items to the Bros.

Another way is to give the items to a Bro that you know, perhaps an Iman, your sisters husband or someday who would be happy to conduct the activities on your behalf.

You can also forward it to the Muslim imam of the Prison. I'm sure if you get in touch with the Governer then he could give you the name of the Muslim Imam or scholar who attends that prison. If there is no scholar who goes there then you could kindly ask the warden how many muslims there are and whether or not you can give the items to em.

If you know of Sisters who has her husband/father or bro or relative in jail you could perhaps ask the sister to give it to the muslim bros.

Sis Serena I don't know your condition on Hijab thats why most of my answers are based towards avoiding contact with other men. I don't want to say something that would render me responsible for your sinning not that you will but because at the end of the day we ALL have to give an answer to our deeds and actions to Allah on the day of judgement.

If you had to visit a womens jail then it would be a lot easier as there would be no real problem of Hijab. You can just walk in and give the items to the Sisters, provided there are not to many male guards.

Anyway thats me for now, but remember you've already got the reward for thinking good, may Allah put barakah in your actions.

Salaam

Ameen!

Jazakallah Khairan for your suggestions. In my local area (Northern California) there are over 300 Muslims in prison. I really want to do something for some of them, insha'Allah.

Wa'assalam,

Serena

Its interesting you mentioned this.  A sister on my Islamic maillist told me that her husband is in jail (for a long time) and that she send him the articles I send and he in turn shares it with the prisoners there and they have been helpful (this is what she said).  So I think that is a wonderful idea and a good way to do dawah.

But see if there are some groups doing this and maybe you can do something through them.

As-salaamu alaikum

Serena,

I am not sure how it is in all prisons but I know that in PA the incarcerated brothers do have Jummah, Khutbahs lectures from scholars and Taleem.   They also have or have access to Qurans in both Arabic and English and other languages too I believe, prayer rugs and kufis.  My husband is the Imam at a prison in PA and also a County Jail in NY.  He has set up a library with Islamic books and tapes.  He also teaches Arabic.  It is not am easy thing as there is much resistance from a good part of the staff and security.  I'm sure if you contacted an Imam from a prison in your area they would tell you how you can help.

Asalm walakum. just contact the prison and ask. they will be really happy to except what ever you offer.
thats what used to happen here. now the government has payed some one to take care of muslim stuff in prisons here. there are enough volenters in london, but some of the prisons outside need people.
in america a lot of people offer their services to prisons. a lot of people are becoming muslim in prison there.
just find out prisons near you, send a letter or phone them up.

good advice from brother jehad
may allah swt reward the sister for good work

having met muslims in prison once has to see their condition to believe it

just because there are laws dosn't mean they are followed

'law cannot go where enforcement will not follow'
