Question for civic-minded Americans...

Anyone here ever do jury duty?

I have been getting excused from jury duty for several years and they won't excuse me anymore. I must go. :(

Anyone have any tips or comments about how to manage the selection process (i.e avoid it) and if selected, how to make the best of it? (i.e to get through it)

I have to do this jury duty during my vacation time! Just when I get out, they pull me back in...

I'd gladly tell you about my one and only experience but alas I'm not an American ;-)

Please ;-), share it if you feel it is appropriate! As you are my mentor and adviser, I have so much to learn from you. :)

non-Americans can respond, just wasn't sure how different or similar the jury process is in other places...

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

One serious point I'd make is find out what kind of oath you have to take.

I know not what the US system is like but over here they will make you take an oath on The Bible unless *you* tell them you want to take an oath on The Qu'ran or you can simply make a simple affirmation that you will judge in the best manner you can.

Once you get selected to be on a jury (which in the UK can take a long time in itself) you end up hearing the case but the real fun starts when the judge sends you out to deliberate with your other 11 colleagues!!!!

Its really interesting to hear what your fellow jurors have made of the evidence that you've all heard together. Who'd be in the dock when you have 12 esteemed members of the public deciding your fate huh?

I have been called to Jury duty many times.
Yet everytime they get a look at me both lawyers dismiss me.
wonder why....

They asked my dad some questions regarding Islam and they dismissed him too. I think it was because of the comment, "God's Law is the supreme Law"

Abdul Basir there are many ways to get out of it.  Like if they ask you can you be fair in judging something, just say that you will be applying the laws of Islam in this case and not the laws of the unbelievers, heheheheh. :D

Another thing you can do when you answer the lawyer is use words like alhumdullilah and insha'Allah.  :D

I remember one woman was asked if she could be fair, and she replied no, she hates the police department and is against them. :)

You could also ask if you are allowed to administer the punishment, heheheh. ;)

There's so many to try, use your imagination.

bhaloo, thanks for your advice...I'm sure if I follow it the FBI will be tailing me in no time...:)

sr. Barr, not sure what it's like in Singapore, but jury duty here in the States can often be a painful experience...mind you, we are not talking about the actual jury part of it where you are involved in a case, but in all the red tape, the waiting, and inconveniences that come along with a jury summons...for example, in answering this summons, i could very possibly go every day of the week to the courthouse and sit around the whole day in some bland room with a bunch of other ppl waiting to be selected or just simply waiting... so the general American public loathes it, especially when the time being taken out for the jury duty is not from work but from the very little vacation time you have in the year (as in my case)...
