| Assalamu'alaikum InshaAllah, a group of about 80 Singaporeans would be going to Cambodia for an expedition called "The Expedition of the Heart" this June. InshaAllah, we intend to help build wells, roads, the town hall, a school, distribute fidyah etc etc etc to a village and some neighbouring villages in Cambodia. My group is tasked to come out with some activities (for about 4 hours) between the viallgers and us. The villagers are Muslims, while for us, most of us are Muslims, but there are also a few non-Muslims with us. And, inshaALlah, we'll also be working with some Cambodian Youths who would help us with the expedition work(and we have no idea, whether they can speak English as well). Do U have any ideas, what sort of activities that we can have for us to interact? For your info, we can't speak Khmer (a language of Cambodia), and neither can they speak English or Malay. We kinda wanna do some folk songs, or perhaps, some traditional games... but we're not sure how receptive it'll be. Do U have any ideas? Jazakallah, shukran :-) |

AsalamAlay.com, Peace and Cultural Exchange Greetings be upon You! I'm too lazy to create a prologue about the following List, so I'll just type out Ideas for Cultural Exchange: [list] [*] Bring Photos/Pictures of Singapore. This creates an opportunity to explain what your environment is in S'pore. It stimulates their curiousity and creates a question/answer opportunity. Hence an exchange of cultures/ideas via pictures. [*] The photos/pictures could be in a scrapbook format [*] Bring an instant poloroid camera so you can take and share pictures IMMEDIATELY. This is almost always an icebreaker and a lotta fun. [*] Bring A digital Camera. Take pics and create a simple one or few page website about your trip. If they have internet access, it'll be another way of bringing you all together. [*] BEFORE you all leave S'pore, ask your co-travellers to email/send/ask-their-grandma-for-their-favourite HALAL recipes. Then compile these recipes, throw in some clip-art, and xerox a cookbook in both english and the local language/dialect of your target village. Food Always brings animosity to an end and warmth and understanding to the forefront. LEAVE copies of your home-made Recipe Books with your new friends! When they cook in the future, they'll think of the memories! [*] POT-LUCK dinner. Perhaps on ONE of the days you all are there, perhaps at the END of your trip when the work there is finished, to illustrate a MUSLIM behaviour, SOME if not ALL of your group from S'pore could FAST one day, as a Thanks to Allah (swt) for the completion of your projects there. At the end of that Single-Thank-Allah Fasting Day, The Pot Luck dinner could take place. mmmm...I wish I could afford the plane ticket! I'd be there in less than 26 hours!!! (YES, I DO think with my stomach) [*] BEFORE you leave S'pore, PRE-RECORD some of the folk songs you have in mind on regular cassettes. Burn a CD if you are able. Use everyday cassettes and dub them via a double-cassette player/recorder on high speed. [*] Do the SAME as above, but with ISLAMIC speeches, qhutbahs, Question and Answer sessions in their local language/dialect, y'get the Idea.... (N.B. MUSIC and QUR'AN recitation should NOT be on the SAME cassette tape. Yusuf Islam SEPARATES his music and Qur'an recordings on to SEPARATE tapes and that's where I get this point from) [*] PICTURE-Dictionaries between your language and theirs. Perhaps a CHILDREN's dictionary full of colourful pictures might be enough of an opportunity for four hours worth of trying to teach each other one another's language. [*] FIND Arabic-KHMER language translations of the Qur'an. If you're gonna build them some facilities like roads, town hall etc. I can't think of a better gift to leave than a Qur'an in a Musalah/Masjid. Masjids can NEVER be short of Local-Language Translations of Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh Books. DO Arabic-Khmer Language islamic texts exist in S'pore? Take 'em along! [*] Here in Toronto, When I was younger, There was a similar gathering of Muslims, when our local ummah was smaller. We were all kinda bored, the kids anyway, until someone dug out a baseball bat and softball outta their car. THEN we kids were VERY happy. Sis Barr, do they play BaseBall in Cambodia? [*] MAPS/ATLAS: It never ceases to amaze me that people never seem to lose the fascination of Looking at where they are on the planet. Maps of the ASEAN countries; Maps of East Asia; Maps of Urban S'pore; Floor Plans of an ordinary apartment in S'pore. [*] Children's Books and Reading The stories in them to the kids. It might not matter that they don't understand Malay or English. It's sometims the TONE and VOICE of the StoryTeller that pleases the little ones. [*] Writing Materials. Create an instant Scrapbook of your visit, make a copy either there or when you get back to S'pore and send back the entire village a 'thank-you'/'Alhumdulillah-we-were-able-to-meet' gift. Which is of course, the home-made-scrap-book. [*] POSTCARDS. Mail a bunch to the Village BEFORE you get there. Perhaps one a day or one every few days until you get there next month. InshAllah this builds anticipation of your group's arrival there in Cambodia. [*] Simple non-controversial toys for the kids. Not only will your group win over the hearts of the children, their parents may be brought more at ease by this sincere gesture. [*] Have your group sponsor a crazy canadian to visit cambodia and then both the muslims from S'pore AND the muslims from the Cambodian village can try to figure out [i]TOGETHER[/i] just what the heck is that canadian talking about?!?!?! [/list] [sub]now...just [i]who[/i] in the world could possibly fill the role of the canuck in the final point in the list...hmmm...I wonder [i]who[/i]...? |

| Football! Get into groups mixed with the other side and really have fun and get to know each other without saying a word! :) Cooking! Share dishes from your country and their country. Have fun. Sounds really great and a worthwhile cause. I wish I was going :) |

Naaahhh! Spare us! *L* [quote]Football![/quote] 20 big grown up men, kicking and running after a teeny weeny inflated rubber ball.... ermmm... *think, think, think, think*..................................................... That's the exact same thing 10 other brothers said to me! really... brothers... if it ain't football, then....it's football, still... innit? :) Thanx, nevertheless :-) But if U r really interested, we can try and work things out, with these expeditions in the future, U know... inshaAllah! Oh yes! We came out in the papers... well... the story is not about me... but it's about some of our non-muslim participants... :) All of us are divided into 4 groups... And they were highlighting my group leader and mashaAllah, he is a wonderful person,.... subhanallah... though he is not Muslim, but I think he has the heart... very thoughtful.. he even enquired what would be good adab while conducting with the sisters... and he said in the article that whenever he's with us, he'll always wear pants that will at least cover his knees! MashaAllah... talk about adab! But there's smt that wasn't mentioned in the article, though. I was evesdropping while he was being interviewed... I mean... I was just next to him, minding my own business! can't really help it if my ear catches a few words, can I?? :):):) ...one of the reasons what he hope to gain in the expedition, is spirituality... some upliftment for him, for him to gain and realise more than what he hoped for (well... smt like that)! Subhanallah.. make du'a for him :) He's one cool person, mashaAllah :) alright, 4 more days till the big day... got my tetanus jab, got my malaria pills... please make du'a for us, the whole expedition team... that we build our character, help others with sincerity and the hope to meet our Creator, and may Allah show His signs and may we see them, as we travel across His lands.... for us to draw closer to Him.
