I never know how to handle this type of situation or what to say, so maybe you girls can help me out on this one :)

today at school, another girl asked why i wear a scarf and my other muslim friend doesn't. She asked me in front of my other muslim friend, so I didn't want to offend her, and i just said, "some do and some don't" I know there has to be a better way of explaining w/out offending people, since it might deter them from wearing hijab.

so any advice?

Or u could explain to the other ppl dat its fard n sum ppl take time to wear it 4 many reasons like they wanna wear it but feel akward.:)

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

You might want to check out the thread here, I think this same question was discussed.

There were some really good answers in the thread you mentioned, se7en.

To elaborate on the question a little. How can you explain to a non-muslim why women have to cover more of their body than men??

Because we are prettier and have more "assets!" ;)

Ok ok I know that won't fly. Expecially to those who find men incredibally attrative.

Your question made me think tho. In the animal kingdom- generally, the male species are more brilliantly colored and the female is by most cases much less.

Tee, Hee Even in nature the female is not displayed!

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

Reminds me of something brother Abdul Wajid saind in answer to a question on his tape "Identity Crisis":

[Imagine a bro with a *really* british accent :)]

<indecipherable question>

"Fair enough.. let's look at it.. we got to look at the confusion this society gives you.  There are two different words - one is called 'equal' and one is called 'same'.  And they're different words.  Because for them, equal means to be the same.  If the guy gets a job the woman gets a job.  If the guys got a car the woman gets a car.  If the guy grows a beard the woman grows a beard.  If the woman has a baby the guy has a baby.  Equal is the same.

But it don't work like that!  Believe, I haven't seen many men drop babies.. <laughing> you know what I mean, it doesn't happen like that.

The fact is this: Islam says yes, men and women are equal, but they're not the same.  Think about it.  A woman can grumble, 'Look, why do I have to wear this scarf over my head? He doesn't.' But a man can complain, 'How come when I go out to earn the money for the family - bring home the bacon, except we don't eat bacon - when I do that, she and my kids have got right over all that money.  But when a woman earns money, which is in her right to do - try to drop that in an asian household, see what happens - all that money is for herself and herself only.  That's unfair against a man.

Jihad, fighting for Allah.  Whether that's protecting kaffir or Muslim, when you go out and fight, that's fard for a man but not for a woman.  Jummah, praying jummah is fard for the man but not for the woman.

So you can say it's weighted against the man, but at the end of the day the man and the woman see that they both end up equal.."
