Azan: An incredible medium for the proclamation of Tawheed of the Almighty ALLAH ta'ala and Risalat of Prophet Muhammad sall Allahu alayhi wassallam, the sound of which echoes around the globe. Amazing though it sounds, but fortunately for the Muslims of the world, it is an established fact. Have a look at a map of the world and you will find Indonesia [a Muslim country] right on the eastern side of the earth's central land mass. Indonesia consists of many numerous islands, the principle ones being Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Celebes, all of which are well known. It is the largest Muslim country in the world with 180 million inhabitants.

As soon as dawn breaks on the eastern island of Celebes, at approximately 5.30 am local time,  Fajr Azan begins. Thousands of Mu'azzins in eastern Indonesia commence proclaiming the Tawheed [Oneness] of the Almighty, Omnipotent and Omniscient ALLAH ta'ala and Risalat [Universal Apostleship] of the Holy Prophet Muhammad sall Allahu alayhi wassallam.

The process then continues and advances towards the western islands of
Indonesia. The time difference between the eastern and western islands of Indonesia in one and a half hours. Hence, one and a half hours after the echoes has been completed in Celebes, it echoes in Jakarta and Java island. Sumatra then follows suit and before this auspicious process of calling Azan ends in Indonesia, it has already begun in Malaysia. Burma is then next in line, and within an hour of its commencement in Jakarta, it reaches Dacca, the capital of Bangladesh. No sooner the calling of Azan ends in Bangladesh,
it has already prevailed in western India, from Calcutta to Luknow.
It then advances towards to Bombay and the environment of entire India
resounds with this glorious proclamation.

Srinagar and Sialkot [a city in north Pakistan] have the same timing for Azan. The difference between Sialkot, Kota, Karachi and Gowadar [a city in Baluchistan, a province of Pakistan] is forty minutes, and within this time, Fajr Azan is heard throughout Pakistan. Before it ends in Pakistan, it has already begun in Afghanistan and Muscat. The time difference between Muscat and Baghdad is one hour. Azan resounds during this one hour in the environments of Hijaz-e-Muquaddas, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq.

The time difference between Baghdad and Alexandra in Egypt is again one hour. Azan continues to resound in Syria, Jordan Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Sudan during this hour. Alexandria and Istanbul [the principal city of Turkey] are situated on the same geographical longitude. The time difference between eastern and western Turkey in one and half hours, and during this time it is echoed with the call to prayer. Alexandra and Tripoli [the capital of Libya] are located at an hour's difference from one another. It continues into Algiers, Tunis, Rabat and Marrakech. The process of calling Azan thus continues throughout the whole of Africa.

Therefore the proclamation of the Oneness of ALLAH ta'ala and the
Apostleship of Prophet Muhammad sall Allahu alayhi wasallam that had begun in the eastern islands of Indonesia reaches the eastern shores of the Atlantic ocean after nine hours. Prior to the Azan reaching the shores of the Atlantic, the process of Zuhr Azan has already commenced in eastern Indonesia, and before it reaches Dacca, Asr Azan has started. This has hardly reached Jakarta, one and a half hours later, then the time for Maghrib becomes due and no sooner has Mahgrib time reached Sumatra, then the time for Isha Azan has commenced in Celebes! When the Mu'azzins of Indonesia are calling out Fajr Azan, the Mu'azzins in Africa are calling out the Azan
for Isha.

If we ponder over this phenomenon seriously, we can only conclude the
amazing fact that thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of Mu'azzins around the world are always proclaiming the Oneness of Almighty ALLAH ta'ala and the Apostleship of the noble Prophet sall Allahu alayhi wasallam.

Insha'ALLAH ta'ala, this universal and continuos calling of the Azan shall continue until the Day of Judgement. Ameen.

All praise be to ALLAH ta'ala. Taken from Riyadh ul Jannah [translated by Hafiz Ghulam Muhammad Bora]. Published by Islamic Da'wah Academy, Leicester, England. Please read, learn, understand, practice and teach others the above.

jazakallahu khayran, very informative article,I posted it in soundvision and asked the teens there if they knew the merits of athan??

1)The beginning of athan:
Ibn Umar says :
When the muslims came to Madinah, they gathered and sought  to know the time of prayer, but no one summoned them. One day they discussed the matter, and some of them said:Use something like the bells of the Christians, and some of them said:Use something like the horn of the Jews.
‘Umar said: Why may not a man be appointed who should call people to prayer?’
The Messeger of Allah said:
“O Bilal ,get up and summon the people to prayer.”(Sahih Muslim).

2)How athan is to be pronounced:

“Allahu akbar(2),Allah is the greatest,
Ash hadu anna la ilaha illa Allah(2),I testify that there is no god but Allah,
Ash’hadu anna Muhammada-rrasoolullah(2),I testify that Muhammad is the ,Messenger of Allah,
Hhaya 3ala-Ssalah(2),Come to the prayer,
Hhaya 3ala-lfalaHh(2),come to work,
Allahu akbar(2),LA ilaha illa Alllah(2).

3)Invoking blessings on the prophet sala Allahu alyhi wasallam:
-Abu Sa3eed alKhudry reported: “When you hear the call tp prayer repeat what the mou’athin pronounces.”(muslim).

-Abdullah ibn Amr bn al3aas reported Allah’s Messenger (sala Allahu alhti wasalam)as saying:
“When you hear the mou’athin repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me:for everyone who will invoke a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah, then beg from Aallah the “waseela” for me which is a rank in Jannah fitting for only one of Allah’s servants, and I hope that I may be that one.If anyone who asks that I be given the waseelah,he will be assured of my intercession.”
(sahih muslim).

4)Merits of those who make athan:
Yahya narrated  it on the authority of his uncle that he had been sitting in the company of Mu3awiyah ibn abi Sufyan, when the mu’athin called for prayer.Mu3awiya said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah say(may peace be upon him)saying:
‘The mou’athinin will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection.”
(sahih muslim).

5)What happens to the shaytan on hearing athan:

Abu Hurairah reported:the apostle (may peace be upon him) said:
“When the call to prayer is made,Satan runs back and breaks wind so as not to hear the call being made, and when it is finished he turns around. When iqamah is proclaimedhe turns his  back, and when it finishes he turns around to distract a man saying:’remember such and such, remember such and such, referring to something the man did not have on his mind, with the result that he does not know how much he has prayed.”(sahih muslim).
