                  The Cause of Death

  ----------------------------------------------------

It is common to hear people say... he died from a heart attack, or the cause of death was drowning, etc... but in spite of the fact what people say, the commonly described causes of death are not the reasons for people dying. People die because thier life-span allocated to them by Allah has come to an end. Allah says:
"Allah gives life and takes life away." (EMQ 3:156)

The life span in Arabic is known as AJAL. The Ajal is determined by Allah, none can shorten or prolong it other than Allah. Allah says:
"When their time (AJJAL) comes they will not be an hour late or an hour early." (EMQ 7:34)

The commonly ascribed causes of death are in fact the forms in whcih Allah has chosen to terminate the life-span(ajal). In other words, the Angel of Death has taken the sould away by the apparent cause of death. However, if the ajal has not terminated the apparent cause of death will have no effect. For instance, people are shot in the head, but still live; likewise people fall from great heights and endure all manner of incredible adversty and still survive.

On the other hand, people die from all manner of simple accidents, often in the 'prime' of life. If the real cause of death was the falling from a height or the bullet in the vital organ, then everyone who experiences this should die. We know this does not hold true, thus people have coined the expression 'when your time is up, it's up!'

Rational explanations often appear so inadequate to explain the cause of death or the reason why some people have survived. Even more perplexing is that some people diagnosed as clinically dead, actually revive and live on. The most pressing argument for saying that the 'cause of death is definitely the apparent cause of death, is the fact that when someones head is chopped off or the heart or brain destroyed death always follows.' In answer to this we bring a similtude....

The rain is the indirect cause for a plant to grow. It is not the direct cause because Allah causes the rain to fall which in turn gives life. Severing the head is like the rain to the plant. Allah has terminated the ajal in the same way he causes the rain to fall.

"He takes souls away when they die"
(EMQ39:42)

Notwithstanding this, we acknowledge, that the cause of death cannot be established by the intellect directly. It stems from our belief, which is based on the definitive evidences from Quran and hadith. The origin of Quran as the speech of Allah, can be proved rationally, and we submit completely to what Allah informs us in the Quran. He says in the Quran: "No soul can die without the permission of Allah in the prescribed book." (EMQ 10:100)

What is the implication of the understanding or is it simply an intellectual exercise? Allah the Almighty in the Quran in reply to the disbelievers says:
"O you who believe, do not be like the disbleivers who said to thier brothers when they went to fight: If they were with us they would not have been killed. Allah will put this in thier hearts as a misery and Allah gives life and takes life and Allah is the all knowing of what you do." (EMQ3:156)

Allah has prescribed Jihad and struggle in His way upon us. Do not let the fear of death be the reason for you not engaging in this struggle. Allah and His Messenger call upon us all to establish His rule on earth, to remove the systems of disbleief and to liberate all muslim land. All this requires great sacrifice, even death itself. But be assured whether one is in the house or on the battlfield death cannot come without Allah's permission. So we should be aware that our ajal may expire when we are sitting at home in the armchair rather than in the path of Allah.

"Wherever you happen to be, death will reach you even if you were in high towers." (EMQ 4:78)

"Say, Your death comes to you when the Angel of Death comes to you."
(EMQ 32:11)
