Assalam-u-Alaikum,

Dear brothers and sisters, I am a Muslim( Alhamdulillah) from Pakistan. I have recently done my M.B,B.S and so I am a doctor. But currently I am in states looking for further studies. A friend referred me to this site long ago and I had been visiting it on and off but finally decided to register myself and take part in the discussions on this board. InshaAllah I'll benefit from it and will be able to contribute to the discussions. If u need to know anything else, feel free to ask me.

Wassalam.

Masha'Allah another doctor! Great to have you hear. Insh'Allah we'll benefit a lot from your active participation in the forum.

Where exactly in the states are you/do you intend to go to?

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Welcome to the board.

With all these doctors in the Madina we'll soon be able to have our own on line clinic!!! ;-)

I remember one of the last times I went to my doctor. I was feeling a bit poorly and had caught some sort of bug and after laying low for a 3 or 4 days it wasn't getting any better so I decided to pay him a visit.

So in I go coughing and wheezing, runny nose to boot and he says what's wrong? I explain to him my case and that nothing that I'm taking is working and could he prescribe for me some antibiotics to help clear up this cold.

He looks at me and says:

"A young man like you doesn't need antibiotics, you'll shake it off in no time"

I'm like…. you what? :o

I never come to see you and the one time I venture in you effectively tell me to get lost?

Needless to say I was a bit irate but I kept my cool [hard to do when you have a fever but you know what I mean] and I tried to persuade him of my weakened state. He wasn't having any of it though, saying the body starts to become immune to antibiotics and thus its better if I just grin and bear it.

I was livid (although he did call me young so there was an upside ;-) ) and left to recover at home.

The Moral of this story?

Don't get sick!!

Nahh but seriously, I think, like has been said before, doctors need to be extremely considerate when talking to patients. I knew the doctor was right in my case but when you're sick and under the weather you're not exactly thinking straight. To me, being a doctor is more than a just having a few letters after your name.

Anyway after all this digression welcome aboard Br Tauseef and may we benefit from your presence here ;-)

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullah, akhi :-)

Welcome to this board... hope you'll enjoy being here, inshaAllah :)

Just to comment smt on the side.. *ahem* :)
"A young man like you doesn't need antibiotics, you'll shake it off in no time"
I think what he said is sooo true, mashaAllah.. Seriously, Br Khalid.... I really can't be bothered to go to the doctor's anymore... In fact throughout my 3 years in the UK... I never went to the Doctors... except for once I had really bad swollen glands... but I was being a bit naughty and went to the A & E instead! But the doctor was REALLY nice, mashaAllah :) ... he politely told me that I should go to the GP instead... I mean... what do I know.. I went to the A & E upon advise from a student doctor friend - and no... it's not Spring!... well, he didn't give me any medication, and after a few days, alhamdulillah, I got better....

I know Spring, my mom, and my other housemates nag me abt eating those paracetemols and lemsip, and those stuff... but I think, Ur body's immune system should be strong enough... U may just need a bit of a longer time for rest... but inshaALlah, U don't fall sick so often.. I say... grin and bear with the pain and headache... and be healthier, inshaALlah :)

I think Sheikh Hamza Yusuf said smt about drugs and antibiotics... something like anti-biotics.. well, it actually means, anti-life ... and it's a part of this consumer-game by large major pharmaceutical industries... It makes us need more and more of these things.... Hmmm, I wonder where r all of my Hamza Yusuf tapes ...

And I think particularly sisters... I mean, we're gonna have a life growing inside us... and I think we should really watch out what we eat/ consume... for it will affect those lives.... and cut down on that drink that gives those toilet bowls the shine! ;)

Take care, all :-)

welcome..

Is it just me or when people get ill with the flu, they stay ill for longer periods of time.  And if they get well the virus comes back with a vengeance in a few weeks?  Aren't we getting near the stage where the viruses are mutating to such an extent that antibiotics will be ineffective?  Are we near the time when the common cold could wipe out entire populations? ???

Is there a doctor in the house?

Assalam-O-Alaikum,

Brothers/sisters, did I really make a mistake by introducing myself as a doctor? U guys started pulling the doctors' leg..........lol.....just kidding. Learner, I am in Texas now and I have to take my USMLE steps to appear in the residency programme.
We'll InshaAllah conduct an online clinic free of charge where I'll be providing my brothers and sisters with good treatment for their physical diseases and will in turn get treated for my moral diseases to become a good Muslim(InshaAllah).

Wassalam.

Its a good thing the doc didn't give u any antibiotics coz antibiotics are effective only against bacteria and what most ppl call the common cold, is caused by viruses. Antibiotics taken in cases like these actually do harm and have no beneficial effects. They cannot destroy the virus that's causing ur cold and they'll only kill the "good" bacteria in ur gut resulting in an upset stomach.

In fact it is precisely this indiscriminate use of these drugs that has caused so many resistant "superbugs" to emerge and which can become life threatening in many situations. We should all be careful not to "pressurize" the doctor to prescribing any drugs-antibiotics or whatever.

BrKhalid, for a common cold the best remedy is some hot soup and lotsa TLC (preferably from ur mommy) :-)

Welcome to the Madina br. Tauseef :-)

Jazakhallah khair for the advice abc ;-)

I was actually kidding when I made that on line clinic remark but I'm seriously learning stuff here!!

Let's face it guys we get a mere cold and we run straight to mommy ( well that's what I've heard anyway ;-) )

A "real man" would grin and bear it! Oops wrong thread.....;)

I know I may upset a few people on the board with this, but does anyone out there drink...... *whispers*......Diet Bebzi? ;-)

Assalam-O-Alaikum,

That's 100% correct what abc has mentioned. I didn't bring up those points because I didn't want to give the same impression to Br. Khalid what he already got from that doctor. Thanks abc for explaining that in such good words. Are u a doctor /medical student too?
Zeyn I am in Austin here staying with my brothers.

By the way Br. Khalid u must have heard this famous quote: An Apple a day keeps a Doctor away and believe me, my family memebers keep on telling me that An apple a day keeps Tauseef away. So better start taking an apple everyday........ :)

Wassalam.

Hmmm...I eat an apple a day and no change in my condition. Maybe I'm eating the wrong apples? ;)

Assalam-O-Alaikum,

Sister Serena, I have been following ur posts and details on ur condition for sometime. I guess, u need to keep the apples away from u for the time being to keep the doctors closer to u for ur well-being. InshaAllah, get well sooner, and we'll sort out the RIGHT apples for u to keep away from doctors in future.......:)

Wasslam.
