Hi, I'm a new citizen here.

Hi, i just registered to be a new citizen here, and have been sort of browsing the conversations going on in the various different areas of the board.  I came accross a subject entitled 'Idols', and was just curious, and they were having a discussion of Sita's birth of Ganesha. I decided to go ahead and share my own version of the story, which will tell you a little about myself, I suppose.

Sita was a married woman who was ravaged by her brother, and this brought darhma upon hersef, her marriage, her brother, and her child. The dahrma being unforgivable sin. As punishment for this sin, the highest of gods punished her by giving her a child with the deformity of an elephants head. She and her husband were terribly shamed by this, and thense began to hide their child from all of the other gods, fearing the retribution of their peers. One day, long after the dreadful event of the childs birth, friends of theirs came by their house.  Sita rushed to shoo the child out of the house so that her friends would not know of her error and heartache. But Ganesha, who was a happy child by nature, once outside, began to dance and sing and play with his favorite toy, a small, lilting flute. The guests, of course, heard the music, and wanted to know where the lovely sound was coming from.  Sita was forsed to introduce her child. "But what a gift he has for music!" exclaimed one of the gods. "Yes, and how gracefully he moves!" exclaimed another. "What a charming child!" agreed the visiting gods. "Why, he is just like us, what can he be the god of?" "I know, said one of them, "Let's make him the god of music and laughter! That would suit us so well, and he really has a gift for it!" Thus Ganesha became the god of music. And I suppose, in my way, I guess I think the point of the story is just to reflect to people how people really do sometimes behave, like their gods, that just when one is sure one has behaved unforgivably, and no one will understand, then somehow some friend may come along to cheer you, forgive and accept, and encourage you. What a gift to be thankful for, friends just like that.

Anyhow, I have been reading the Qu'ran lately, some, and have been so surprised to find that many of the stories contained there are stories I grew up on most of my life.  I just didn't know they were from the Qu'ran.  I am enjoying having a look around, and I am looking forward to getting aquainted. I'm not moslim, I'm just taking a look around, but parts of what I see do seem meaningful and make sense, other things don't seem to make as much sense. I get confused very easily. Anyhow, I am looking forward to meeting some of you. Patti

Hi Sonny  :)

Welcome aboard to Madinat Al Muslimeen family.
Hope you enjoy your stay here and I'm pretty sure that you will.

I'm glad to hear that you're reading the Qu'ran and you find much inspiration in it. Insha'Allah (Allah willing) you shall see that the more you read the Qur'an the more the puzzle of life becomes clearer, eventually fitting together perfectly piece by piece like a jigsaw.

If ever you do need clarification on anything - just ask. There are plenty of brothers and sisters here who are just all too eager to help. We may not have the answers to your queries but at least we can direct you towards others who may.

Take care.   :)

salaam

the rest of the world religions are like shards of islam so most of the imagery is similar

eg the imagery of the tree yggdrsl..the rivers that flow from there
the concepts of alam i mithal (for instance that man existed before and was then recreated with other attributes)
the concept of another elder race that existed before mankind who are powerful but not able to understand technology etc
the serpeant and the tree

if you decide to explore this you can begin to see how others have changed the concepts of islam

islam extends from the basics to levels of complexity that are staggering advise you to read 'the vision of islam' by a japanese author which uses just the discussion of one hadith to explain everything!

Hindus believe that ram went off somewhere and Seta was having a bath. She decided to make a son for her self out of her impurities (I am not going to define what this means). She told her son to guard the door. Ram came back, and tried to come in, Ganesh stopped him, so ram chopped off his head. Seta got very upset, so ram chopped an elephant’s head off and stuck it on Ganesh.

The problem with the Porunahs is that there are so many versions of them telling completely different stories about the same events.

Welcome to the board Patti! Nice to have you here. Feel free to ask anything..the answers are really good.

Br.Khalid, if she means what I think she does then it's stories from the old Testament...Yusuf, Moses, Noah etc. This really took me by surprise too when I first started to find out about Islam. It was very close to home.

Subhan Allah! He guides us in ways that we don't even recognise, only in hindsight do we see how he took us by the hand and led us carefully in the right direction!

Patti, sister, I hope you'll be strong and go the way your heart tells you.

BrKahlid,

As a matter of fact, the story which I have heard most often quoted in our church is the one where an angel is traveling with Moses, I think, or Noah, and asks him not to ask him any questions about what he does.  Then as they are traveling by boat, he drills a hole in the bottom of the boat. Then they pass a city, where the angel mends a wall. And then? I can't quite remember all the details. But the angel had drilled the hole in the boat to save the owner from a persuing opponent, and mended the wall to protect a child's fortune, and? There is a third which I cannot recall. Our preacher has preached three or four sermons on this story, and I was surprised to read it in the Qu'ran. Well, at least he recognizes the value of the lovely story. There were several other stories I recognized as well. As I was reading, I was thinking, "Of course, I have never heard the truth told any other way." Well, that is all then. Thanks for asking. Patti

nice to have you here :D

i think you are speaking of surat-al-Kahf (The Cave) ... the story of Khidr and Moses.

the third is that he killed a young man, which seemed not right at first, but he explains that the reason he did it was cuz the man's parents were people of Faith, and he feared that he would grieve them by rebellion and ingratitude (to Allah and man). instead perhaps their Lord would give them another son who was kinder and had better conduct.

i really like the moral of the story which is that we do not always understand the full wisdom behind everything that happens to us. sometimes we dislike something and don't think it is good for us, but at the end it turns out that it was actually for the best. so we should always trust Allah even when things don't seem to go "our way".
