FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 6/4/2001                  --- MEDIA ADVISORY ---
U.S. MUSLIM LEADERS RISK ARREST TO PROTEST MIDEAST POLICY
State Department sit-in to highlight concerns over support for Israel's
"Apartheid-like" practices
WHAT: On Tuesday, June 5, the executive director of the Council on
American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), along with a number of other leaders of
national and local Muslim groups, will risk arrest during a "sit-in"
outside the Department of State in Washington, D.C. That act of civil
disobedience is designed to protest what event organizers say is America's
uncritical support for Israel's "Apartheid-like" policies toward
Palestinian Muslims and Christians.
The Muslim leaders, including representatives from the American Muslim
Council (AMC), Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), Muslim American
Society (MAS), and others, will risk arrest to highlight the negative
foreign policy implications of America's lack of diplomatic action to
challenge Israeli policies of forced expulsions, home demolitions, land
confiscation, discrimination, humiliation, harassment, torture, ethnic
segregation, and denial of basic human and religious liberties.
In a letter sent to President Bush on Friday, CAIR Executive Director Nihad
Awad wrote: "America is at a crossroad in its relations with the Muslim
world. The current policy of uncritical support for Israeli brutality
against Palestinian civilians is isolating our nation politically and
economically from more than one billion Muslims in dozens of nations."
Awad added that the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, the
continued expansion of Israeli settlements and the denial of the right of
return for Palestinian refugees are the core issues that must be addressed
before there will be any lasting peace in the region.

NO ONE WINS WHEN BOTH SIDES ARE MOTIVATED BY RETALIATION

Palestinians can no longer endure Israel's occupation of what they consider
to be their land. They cannot continue accepting the daily restrictions and
humiliations, the expropriations, the destruction of houses, the uprooting
of orchards, the diversions of water supplies, the placing of impassable
barriers between villages...CALLS FOR SLAVERY RESTITUTION GETTING LOUDER
By TAMAR LEWIN, The New York Times, 6/4/2001

It has been more than a century since Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman ordered
that the coastlands confiscated in the Civil War be divided into 40-acre
plots and distributed to thousands of former slaves.
After Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Andrew Johnson rescinded the order
and took back the land that had been distributed. Since then, the idea of
compensating African-Americans for the sins of two and a half centuries of
slavery has hovered in the background, far from reality. But now the
movement for reparations is gaining steam...-----CAIR
