AJ Arbury? [Quran translation?]

Assalamu Alaikum!

Does anyone know about AJ Arbury's meaning of the Qur'an in english? Sometime
back I had heard there is one AJ Dawood one and that has not been written with
very honest intentions!

A.J. Arberry, a renowned Orientalist and Professor of Arabic at the Universities of London and Cambridge, has been, so far, the latesp non-Muslim translator of the Qur'an.

Arberry's The Koran Interpreted (London, 1957) no doubt stands out above the other English renderings by non-Muslims in terms of both its approach and quality. Nonetheless, it is not altogether free from mistakes of omission and mistranslation, such as in Al' Imran 111:43, Nisa' IV: 72, 147 and 157, Ma'ida V: 55 and 71, An'am VI: 20, 105, A'raf VII: 157, 158 and 199, Anfal VIII: 17, 29, 41, 59, Yunus X: 88, Hud XI: 30 and 46 and Yusuf XII: 61.

Arberry, A.J., The Koran Interpreted (London, 1955). 12 edns. Contains no explanatory notes or background information about Suras. Not altogether free from omissions and mistranslations. For example al-Anfal VIII:59 is rendered as: 'And thou are not supposed that they who disbelieve have outstripped Me' whereas the correct translation would be: 'Let not those who disbelieve deem that they have escaped Me'. An-nabi-ul Ummi is mistranslated as 'the Prophet of the common folk'. Other instances of mistranslation are: Ale-Imran III:43; Nisaa IV:72, 147 and 157; Maida V:55; Araf VII:157; al-Sajdah XXXII:23; al-Anfal VIII:59 and Yunus X:88, etc.

Don't rely on him

I remember stuff he wrote about a fiqh issue once and he tried to make it into a joke because a war had started over what had seemed on the surface a trivial issue between muslim groups

when i researched the issue turned out the principle was being argued about not the example and that it had led to imam ibn hanbal being whipped due to the mutazili

the first orientalists were full of hate in their works and they were pathetically obvious as well as obviously pathetic

the next generation like arberry work in a different manner but they are no less poisonous..the book by the way was about the different fiqh's in islam (i can't recall the title)

also remember they will add verses that don't exist such as those to Omar Khayyam and because they are familiar with the ruh of islam they will not understand verses eg they still translate khayyam's jug of wine as a jug of wine because they think he was obsessed with wine like them..
