Silly, but I am curious about your names...
Sonny
06/04/01 at 19:22:45
It seems as though so many people here have selected a name for themselves which is meaningful for them, and I often don't know what that meaning is. Saleema, that is a very pretty name. What does it mean? My name means "Patrician" or "noble." I chose it at age five or so, and parents very kindly put it on my birth cert. And my nickname, Sonny, is used here at home...dad wanted a son, and here I am. So I started life as a tomboy, and outgrew it, probably like the rest of you. But could any of you tell me a little about your names, and why you chose them? It's a dull topic, but would be interesting for me. Ta, Patti

My name means pure.

Marcie
06/04/01 at 22:45:26
As salamu alaykum
Marcie is feminine for Mark and it means warrior.  It was a gift from parents at birth. They had been planning on a boy and had not planned any girls names.  Since it was a gift I didn't feel that I should change it when I became a Muslim.

salleemah is a name of a flower. it is also used for the purfume that is made from that flower. a lot of people like its smell, but to me it smells like house holdbleach.
Saleemah is also the feminin of saleem. It is hard to translate this word in to english.
It comes from the rout word s,l,m, which kind of means at piece. very hard to translate it.
same rout word as islam, muslim etc.

Bro jehad, try to spell it as "peace" not "piece". The zionists are already exploiting us for that. They ask us to shake hands to give us "piece" and not "peace"!

anyways...

my sn is momineqbal. Momin or Mu'min in arabic means a believer in Allah (swt). Eqbal is my first name which means prosperity. My full name's meaning translates as the one who wins.

Fatoosh is the name of a delicious salad I had at Cedar House. I just like the sound of the word. :) But my real name, Sara, means princess. When my parents named me, they were only thinking of the wife of Prophet Abraham. However, a Jehovah Witness on the train who was trying to convert me, told me that it means princess.

had to change my name when I became Muslim!

Rashid means rightly guided.  It was given to me because I came to Islam through reading and studying.  I'm inspired by it because of the khilafah al-rashidun, that's a big legacy to live up to.  And also another great khalifah, Harun Al-Rashid.

I'm reading "Muhammad" by Martin Lings at the moment. (BRILLIANT BOOK!!!!!)

Anyway, I thought it was really interesting and funny how some people got their names. For example Rasulullah's (pbuh) grandfather Abd ul Muttalib. Which means slave of Muttalib. (Muhammad's great grandfather). This came about because when Muttalib went to get his son and take him to Mecca, his son was already about 14 years old and when he arrived in Mecca, sitting behind his father, everyone thought he was a new slave of Muttalibs and called out "Abd ul Muttalib!" and the name stuck!

Even better was the name Abu Jahl. (father of ignorance). He was a disbeliever and a big opponent of Islam. I thought the name suited him really well! It wasn't his real name of course, but how he came to be known.

I also liked how they called Muhammad "al-Amin", the trustworthy, even before the revelations. He had proved to be a reliable and trustworthy person.

Sorry for digressing, get to the point. My name is Eleanor. (duh!). I'm not sure of the meaning but I heard once that it's derived from the name Helen which means light. So you can just call me Noor if you like!!! My father chose my name for me and that's a good reason for me to keep it. When I was a kid I didnt like my name very much because it was rare and not (in my opinion) very pretty. I would have preferred to be called Susie or Sarah or Lisa or any of the popular names back then. But now I like my name. I wouldn't feel the same without it. I also feel like it's a present from my father which I permanently carry around with me.

One thing I would say, is that non muslims find it very hard to say my name properly because of the difficulty of pronouncing the "Kha"

It involves making a sound from the back of the throat which they can't seem to do without generating copious amounts of saliva!!!! [ I hope someone knows what I'm going on about here, otherwise this may seem like a very strange post indeed!! ;-) ]

This would explain why I was affectionately called a bonnet as a child!!! [ Carlid ]

Well, Leah was not a bad name, altogether, I guess, but my family tacked on the name of "Partridge", you know, those funny little plump birds with tiny heads, so it was, Leah Partridge...and then of course, they had to sing about it at Christmas..."And a partridge in a pear tree!" Uoh! I had to change it...and I like my name now, very simple and direct, it say's what it is. I like that name, Arsalan, too.  It was the name of the lion in "The Chronicles of Narnia", a fantasy epic for children. But codliveroil?--Sonny

mother decided on Sabri instead.

Aslan and Arsalan are the same name.  Different spelling.  The proper spelling is supposed to be Aslan I guess, but the Turks themselves have messed up the word by adding an 'r' sound over the ages.  So it's become Arslan.  But then my parents added an extra 'a' I guess and it became Arsalan!

Anyway ...

Eleanor.  Al-Noor.  Does anyone else see the similarity?  :)

Martin Lings' book changed my life.  Cherish that book Eleanor!

"...days when I was young...seem like such a distinct memory." (quote)
Well, I am a great grandmother, so some small allowances I think are in order.  My great-grand-daughter is three years old, now. The day I got the news, there really was some slippage in the gears, and they slipped and stayed that way. I think it's a moment of passage in life, when you get that news, and it entitles you to some priviledges...like vauge reasoning on important questions, clear memories of the distant past, and an erratic temperment.  If there are other priveledges I can claim, let me know, I will be all too happy to claim them as mine.  It was one of the happiest moments of my life, and I hope you all will experience it one day.  It has a way of turning back the hands of time. You'ld be surprised.  And when I told my dad he was a great-great-grandfather, he just cried like a baby. Well, that is still just a little down the road for me. And the other happiest moment of my life was just today, I think, when the women at the mosque gave me a hajib garment in which to pray. I just put it on, and it felt so right, like a loving welcome from God. I will treasure the memory of this wonderful day for years to come. I wish I could wear it every day...aahh, well, later on, I think I will. Well, I really am such a silly old grandmother at times. Forgive me for dawdling around in the past when there is so much going on right now in the ever present moment. I forget.  Patti

Assalam u Alikum,
My nick is Mehak and it means perfume/khushboo in urdu. My real name is Erum which has like 4 different spellings and I dont know which one is right so I just go by whatever my dad wrote on my passport. "Erum" was the artificial jannah made by this kaafir king called Shaddad who claimed to be equally powerful as Allah( Na3aozubillah!!) .The moment he set foot in the garden ,he was swallowed by the earth. So,Erum in general means jannah/heaven. It is also mentioned in the Quran as the name of the grandson of Hazrat Noah (PBUH) as Erum bin Saam bin Noah and a tribe was named Erum. Now I know I am a girl but have no idea how it changed from a guy's name to a girl's over so many thousand years. Maybe one of u guys could help me out ???

Katooshka was one of my grandfather's nicknames for me. He was from Bulgaria and Katooshka is a slavic diminuitive for my real name which is Katherine. I stuck the "h" on the end when I set up my e-mail because the other spelling was already taken. My other nickname was Katinka. He used to sing me little songs in Bulgarian that would rhyme with both of these names, but I don't remember them now.

At first, my moulana named me Akhbar because I told me my sister called me that...

but I chose Abdullah because Akbhar was a name she made for me to make fun of me on my becoming muslim (it was innocent though).
