Its not new. There are a few Islamic Online Univ. It can be beneficial but you need to spend a lot of time on the comp. Personally I don't like IOU. No offense but there has been a lot of questioning and critisizm on Billal Philips and his books, "Devil's Deception" or something like that (cant remember exactly). It has been said they are a lot and I mean a lot of misquotes and some quotes don't even exist. Just be careful.

I've read the Devil's Deception, it's a summary of Ibn al Jawzee's Talbees Iblees.  Can you give me some specific examples of these mistakes?  I'm curious...

Honestly I haven't had any major problems with what I've read by him so far (the ansar cult in america, dream interpretation, the fundamental of tawheed, salvation through repentance, the essay on jinn, his stuff on islaam.com, etc) and I really liked his tafseer of surah al Hujjurat..

I know he's very... rigid... in the way he teaches.. at least that's the feel I get from the books I've read.. his book on dream interpretation included basically a dismissal of the translation of ibn sireen's dictionary of dreams.. he said (from what I remember) that most of it, because it was not based on Quran or ahadeeth, was speculation at best... all of his interpretations in the book were based on specific ayaat from the Qur'an.. it was pretty interesting..

I think he's definitely someone with *a lot* of knowledge and experience when it comes to teaching Islam... and I think that I would rather learn from someone who relies *too* stringently upon the Quran and ahadeeth than one who takes his interpretations from elsewhere.. you know what I mean?

wAllahu 'alam...

i think the book he translated relates to one particular group of muslims

i think people could say the same about 'then i was guided' by the group giving the opposite view and i've checked the hadith quoted in their and they don't exist

of much more concern to me is has he a ijaaza from scholars to teach or does he just teach general islam (by ijaaza i mean to teach fiqh)

inshallah if i recieve the right answer on this board with regards to the takfeer policy (which some seem to have been termed into a dirty word, by the way there was no such group as takfir wal hijrah it was a smear attempt to tarnish the word) to another question i'll post it on the board if i don't i'll email you the stuff

inshallah i'll ask him directly
the reason i asked was that he studied in universities in saudia

well if he was asked to leave
excellent good
the only good scholars i know of in saudia are in exile or in prison
imam hamza yusuf was asked to leave algeria

So what? Does that mean that you don't trust anyone who has studied at Saudi? I know there isn't a lot of academic freedom there, not much freedom of anything for that matter, but all universities in virtually all the islamic countries are like that--too much government involvement and too much influence in some.

by the way i heard that bilal phillips was asked to leave saudi by the government there?

Please be careful with generalizations, there are many good and knowledgable
scholars in Saudia who have not gotten in trouble with the government.

Yes, it is true that Bilal Phillips was asked to leave Saudia.

Please share the information you said about Bilal Philips' book as soon as
possible, I am waiting to hear what you have to say.

Assalamu alaikum

I dont think it is a right criteria to judge a person's scholarly abilities based on whether or not he was expelled from saudi.
anyways if anyone has a problem with his works wouldnt it be best to just get it cleared with dr. Bilal Philips himself? His email address is fld3@hotmail.com

As Salaamu Alaikum,

I've read a few books by Abu Ameena Bilal Philips. One of the things that I like about his works is that he includes footnotes. He seems to always provide, at least as far as I can tell, authentic souces for his quotes. I've even known him to state that something may be a personal opinion or feeling. One of the things that I fear most is deviating from Al-Islam. With so many scholars and so many books floating around, it can be easy to be lead astray. I have to agree with Se7en:
I think he's definitely someone with *a lot* of knowledge and experience when it comes to teaching Islam... and I think that I would rather learn from someone who relies *too* stringently upon the Quran and ahadeeth than one who takes his interpretations from elsewhere.. you know what I mean?
Now I don't claim to know the contents of this brothers heart nor his intentions, but I've had no problems with his writings. However like I said, I've only read a few, "The Fundamentals of Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism)" happens to be one of my favorites.

From what I know, the Saudi government, as well as others (like Algeria in the case of Hamza Yusuf) does have a tendency of throwing true advocates of AL-ISLAM out of the country, so I don't see where that should count against him.

Just my opinion...

Salaf.... who exactly are they? And which era do they belong to? Are they the same according to all the groups within Islam?

The Salaf are the first two generations of Muslims.  That is, the Sahaabah and the Tabi'een.  They are the same according to all the groups within the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah.

Wassalamu alaikum.
