| A very racist comic was printed by Malcolm Mayes was run on Tuesday June 5th by The Edmonton Journal (www.edmontonjournal.com). | To be honest, I do not believe that the american public does fully understand what they are doing. These things in the media are, in my opinion, done because it is "in fashion" to have no tolerance for one religious group. If it were not the Muslims, it would be the Jews, or the catholics, or what ever. Much of the media is very uneducated about our ways. And, because of the society that we (the americans in general) have allowed to be constructed many refuse to even try and learn even the smallest detail of what we are truly about. Americans are xenophobic. If something is different that requires a little bit of learning to understand it is shunned and considered bad. Thus the public makes fun of the difference and tries to drive it out. Well... that is my two cents worth... sincerely Usamah |

You understand the methodolgy ukthi but your conclusion is wrong it is a tactic to drive and destroy a ideology by lampooning it.. consider the pharoahnic regimes lampooning of a sawalaheen muslim on tv after advice for the kaffir [quote] Americans are xenophobic. Please read our demand to the Newspaper at the end of this email. Please let the specialists handle it. We will soon form a nation wide steering committee to handle the case. Thank you. Case update 1- JDC has been copied on more than 125 Letters and has been notified of more than 90 phone calls to the EJ regarding the hate Cartoon. I estimate the total letters and phone calls to the Edmonton Journal at more than 550. 2- JDC can set a side $3,000 for the legal case. Further more we have received over $5,000 in pledges yesterday. I believe we can raise much more. In total JDC can raise between $15-20,000 for this case. Where do we go from here: I am proceeding with the previously outlined plan. Our community is very moved with this issue and it may be the clearest case of Southam chain blatant mongering of hatred against our community. We can NOT lose this opportunity to try to shut them up once and for all. I am thinking about suing them for 10's of millions of dollars if not 100's of Millions. I know we will not get that, but let us draw a line in the sand just once and mobilize the community on this very critical issue. I am carrying on with consolation with lawyers, but meanwhile I propose that we enlist the support of as many Canadian Arab and Muslim organization as possible. We will form a steering committee to oversees and follow up with the case. We will open a special bank account just for this issue. We will have a volunteer certified accountant to audit the account. I have already received the financial backing of even Arab organization in the US. I have received many inquiries from people wanting to raise funds for the case. Our Canadian Arab and Muslim community have come to painfully expect this unprofessional, sometimes hateful and now unlawful conduct by reporters of the Southam chain of Newspapers. The Ottawa Citizen, The National Post and the Edmonton Journal have often shamelessly displayed a very tilted, biased and sometimes inaccurate reporting in favor of Israel and in defense of its atrocities against a largely defenseless Palestinian population. However, it is one thing to be politically and shamelessly biased and it is another to promote hatred against an identifiable Canadian ethnic group. The Edmonton Journal Cartoon has crossed the line and has promoted hatred against our community. I re-affirm, had this been a strictly political statement, we would be content with publishing our perspective via letters to the editor or the op-ed page. But this is hate mongering at its worst and the Edmonton Journal will have to go well beyond publishing few letter to rectify the situation. The cartoon equates Arabs with Animals and describes them as killers, murders, vile ..... and having us write few letters to the editors to prove our humanity and to prove that we are not killers, murders and vile is NOT what we consider an intelligent debatable issue. Ms. Ruttan, our humanity is not open for debate. Our community members are very saddened, heart broken and traumatized by the bigoted depictions. Successive stereotyping and dehumanization of Arabs and Muslim by media outlets such as yours have significantly contributed to our young being called hurtful names in the school yard. It has scarred and effected their self esteem and self worth. No Canadian should be subject to such inhumane treatment especially at such a young age. We do hope that we can come to a reasonable settlement where we can attempt to rectify the resulting damage, counsel our distressed and traumatized community and ensure that such conduct is not tolerated in our Canadian media especially at Southam. So we propose that the Edmonton Journal (or Southam) do the following 1- Publish a prominent and an unequivocal apology to the Arab and Muslim community - I am sure we can agree on the wording and content of such apology. 2- Provide a large 2 page special editions that will address Arab and Muslim contribution to civilization and science. This will address the stereotyping damage and misconception founded and propagated by the media. We will be happy to provide the material and the article. 3- Allow space for a one page comprehensive article about the roots of the Arab/Israeli conflict. This is will factually address the conflict away from the negative depiction and inaccuracy portrayed in in the media such as your Cartoon. We will be happy to provide the article and the material. 4- Have your staff and reporters, undertake some orientation program to increase their awareness of Arab and Muslim issues and their contribution to civilization. 5- Have Mr. Malcolm Mayes take some special community awareness programs and orientation about ethnic issues especially that of the Arab and Muslim community that he attacked. 6- Unspecified monetary compensation by your paper to address: a- Distress, anguish and trauma felt by our community members b- Use some of the money to establish programs to increase media awareness of community and ethnic issues. Till this issue is adequately and officially settled, above claims do not preclude any further claims, upon legal consultation. | Assalamu alaikum, As a follow up to the racist cartoon I posted about yesterday, I received the e-mail below. Alhamdulillah. Malik ====================================================== Thank you all for your efforts! A friend of mine works at the Edmonton Journal and he said their system almost crashed from the flood of emails they got, some as far away as London, England! The paper ran 10 letters to the editor complaining about the comic and the artist himself apologized: http://ceppal.tripod.com/CEPPal/id14.html This is VERY rare for a cartoonist whose job it is to be controversial to apologies, so we should all feel that our collective efforts have made a difference.
