Were most of you born and raised as muslims, or do some have conversion stories?

I was thinking about this last night. In about spring of 1999, I think, I was researching Islam on the web, (?) and I converted. Here, I think. And then I rushed off to share the news with some moslim friends that had been raised in the religion, but I think they don't practice it...and I fell into a disipated lifestyle and after a while I forgot all about it. My former lifestyle just re-asserted itself...what can I say? So I thought I should just start all over at the beggining again, with a confession of faith, and a good hot shower. But I couldn't remember...wash left to right? right to left? Anyhow I got clean, and asked Allah to forgive me. And I'm trying to learn the prayers.  Anyhow I couldn't believe that I could have forgotten.  I never forgot the day that I got saved into Christianity. We were in the mountains, and the preacher was baptizing kids in a river, and when she baptized me she must have thought I was a very irritating teenager, because she held me under the water and wouldn't let me come up for air.  I finally swam away, and came up in a different part of the river.  Wierd, huh? Allah was saving me for later, I suppose. But how did some of the rest of you come to be muslim, and how have you kept from slipping away from it? What do you think are the most important aspects of your faith, that I should be aware of right off the bat? The amount of information is overwhelming...it will take a long time to learn. Anyhow, any suggestions for me?  Patti

no one is perfict, we all make mistakes. me more then most people.
what we do is repent, Allah is most merciful.

I'm awfully sorry. I apologize. That was probably too candid.  I understand that quite a few people here have been raised in Islam and probably do not quite relate.  I'll learn as I go along. I really do enjoy your conversations.  Patti

I am a revert. Have slipped once or twice- it is a slippery road out there for a lot of us!

I think the most important aspect of our faith (other than the belief in one God) is prayer. and duas.

The times I slipped were when I wasn't making salat well.

Also- I think slipping made me a bit more humble and compassionate. It is pretty cool taking shahadah- and starting with a clean slate!
I had no sins!! (that I knew- but now that I know better...)

Now I suffer until day of judgement wondering if Allah swt will forgive me.

Prayer- for me- if it suffers- I suffer. Alhumdulilah!

Check the "Tree of Hope" folder. There are plenty of inspirational stories about the rest of the family members.

Its not only converts who slip up. All of us slip up from time to time. Some of those things are greater than others. But Allah is forgiving and merciful and we turn to Him for His forgiveness and His mercy. May He grant us a place in His Jannah and forgiveness for our sins and our shortcomings. Ameen.

Assalamu'alaikum, Patti :) And the rest of my beloved Madinans!!!

Sometimes... it is when we slip, and fall... that we realise of the greater need to get back up... and sometimes, a 'lil slip sets us for a more enduring path....

Sister Kathy... was it difficult, initially, for a convert to establish solat? I'm just wondering... what are the things that those who have just accepted Islam find difficult to accept or practice... might be conceptual, might be practical stuff....

wallahua'lam :-)

As salamu alaykum Sister Barr,

I can't answer for sister Kathy, but for me prayer was one of the most important things, because I began to feel a connection with Allah(swt) again.  I had been raised a catholic, but as a teenager knew that I did not believe in the religion.  Yet I knew that I believed in God.  So for many years I was afloat knowing that I believed in God, but not how.  Al hamdu lillah I was guided.

I think in the beginning it is hard because there is so much to learn and it can be overwhelming at times.  I think for myself and many other reverts that I know it is hard when you see the perfection of Islam and the state of the Ummah.  Many of us have had a crisis period; even born Muslims.  I think that that is when some turn away from Islam.  Allahu Allem.

I hope you don't mind me barging in.

As salamu alaykum
Your sister in Islam
Marcie
