Muslim/Islam hands-on activities?

I am a homeschool mom who will be teaching my children about world
history next year including the Prophet Mohammed and Islam.  They are young and
seem to retain things better when I can 'show' them about a culture.  I'm
looking for some type of craft or art activity that would be easy to do at home with
children that would help them get a feel for early Muslim days.  I had thought
about trying to recreate the beautiful tile paintings, but can't find anything
on the Internet showing any ideas how to do this.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions.  Thank you.

islamic caligraphy is probably a good subject
show them how muslims used caligraphy as a decorative art

it'll also develop their creativity and concentration
