pigs, muslims and medicines

salam,

yesterday i was watching a program where a 21 year old girl had a stroke  that affected the left side of her brain, she continued to get worse and the doctors only hope was to insert pig cells from a mother pig who was pregnant, into her brain, with the risk of her body not accepting the cells and her dying, and/or having her left side paralized for life.  well the procedure went on and she had a siezure but she still lived.

another case shown was (this was out in the media alot) that a baby born with defiencies was given a baboon heart and died 21 days later.

now my question is if this were to happen to a muslim, are they allowed to take a baboons heart, or pig cells (reminding everyone that pigs/pork is haram) in order to stay alive, are there exceptions to go agaisnt what the quran says about protecting animals in order to help a muslim?

and what about human donors? can we recieve a liver, kidney from someone else, do they themselves have to be muslim?  or can we even donate?

these questions just came up to my head as i was watching the program.
wasalam nouha:)

assalam alaikum,

I would think (but this is merely my opinion) that this would count as an exception to the pork is haram rule if it can be shown that using pig cells is the only way to save the person's life, just as the dietary restrictions are eased if the person faces death by starvation.

Pigs have been used to treat illness in the past.  Before it was possible to produce human insulin in a laboratory, insulin dependant diabetics were often treated with a blend of beef and pork insulin since this combination was better tolerated by the human body than was the beef insulin alone.  This blend of animal insulins saved the lives of millions of people, including me.  Although I was not muslim at the time I took it, I don't think that this would be haram because my life depended on it.  I have to admit, though, that I do not know the opinions of any scholars on the subject, and would be interested in hearing what they have to say.

wassalam,
Leslie

On the topic of heart transplants, here's an interesting anecdote:
