Assalamu`alaykum,

Does any of you live in Madison (Wisconsin)?  We`re considering moving there,
but don`t know much about that place.  What can you tell me about it?  How is it
for muslims overthere?

I would really appreciate any info.

Jazakallahu khaira

I'm a native of Madison, although I don't live there anymore, I visit
my family there.  Al-Jumu'ah magazine is based there and they have a masjid
attached with a very nice group of brothers and sisters attending the halqaat they
have.  There is a second mosque in the university area.  I know less about them
than the "sunnah mosque" (al Jumuah),but there is an active halaqah for the
women there too, that I do know.
Madison is beautiful in the summer, very cold in the winter.  It is almost
always listed in the top 10 best cities to live in for its population category.  It
is a pretty liberal city, so they are tolerant to a fairly decent extent.  Once
in awhile I'll see someone shouting at me while they pass in a car (I'm a
woman), but on the whole they are quite accepting of hijab.

Jazakallahu khayra for your reply.  People shouting at you?  Oh my...
it never happened to me, here in Montreal.  Is there an islamic school
affiliated to the Jumuah magazine mosque?  thanks again for the info.

Wassalam

Assalaam alaikum wa Rahmatu Allah,
One of my dearest friends is from Montreal and she told me there is a large
percentage of Muslims there, and seeing  hijab is quite ordinary.  Madison is a
smaller place, with a less percentage of Muslims.  If I visit a shopping mall, I
usually see at least one other Muslim sister there.  There have only been 3 or
4 incidents like the shouting one during my visits over the last 15 years.  I
guess I mentioned it since one incident happened on my latest visit.
Unfortunately, there is no Islamic school in Madison.  The one sister I talked
to the most there home schools her children.  Masha' Allah, her children are
some of the most polite, and islamically minded children I have seen.
