Assalamu alaykum,

I'm new here. I've been a constant visitor to Al-Madinah for quite sometime now and i finally thought i would make my presence known.

I'm originally from somalia but lived almost half of my life in Cairo, Egypt. I recently moved to the united states. Can't believe it's almost a year now!!

Anyways i just wanted to say that i really enjoy coming to this place. And i hope to benefit more from the contributions of the brothers and sisters here. It's important that as muslims we learn to love and respect each other despite having disagreements. And i believe that this board is serving this purpose quite well.

take care

Welcome to the board. :)  Enjoy your stay here.  What was it like being a Muslim in Somalia?  How are things over there?

Assalamu alaykum,
what's it like there?
Somalia is an east african country. It's nicked named the horn of africa because it's shaped like a horn. 99% of the population is muslim and the rest are mainly cristians or jews from ethiopia who lived on the border. At lease that was the case before the start of the civil war 11 years ago.
What was it like being a Muslim in Somalia?  How are things over there?
I was in my early teens when we left somalia. Being a muslim was a given. I don't remember ever seeing a somali who was not a muslim. In fact that is what helped the somalis oppose the italian and english colonizers. They could never change the somali because of his love and pride for the religion. Eventhough a somali might not understand the Qur'an because he doesn't know arabic, you will find the same person reciting the whole Qur'an by heart. Somali children were tought the Qur'an long before they started school through kuttabs.

Our house was situated a few blocks from the biggest mosque in Moqdishu. I could never forget the beautifull voice of the mu'adhin nor the amazing recitation of the Qur'an before the khutba on fridays.

That's all in the past though :( Somalia has long gone and it's been replaced by the land of mad men. However, Allah's mercy is greater than anything and only He has the power to bring the somali people back together as a nation. May Allah have mercy on all of us. Ameen.

wassalam
