Reality check

Assalamu Alaykumu
Brothers and sisters..I need your advice to help me in a reality check. How can
you tell if you are unqualified to do some things or if someone is constantly
bombarding you with negativity?
Just for an example, within minutes of being asked to do a khutba, this person
would tell me how alot of people might be influenced by what I had to say, Islam is
not about people's opintions there is right and wrong, that I can't just use the
internet, I need lots of books which I don't have, I need to support everything I
say, etc. Just constant advice that sounds like that which makes me insecure
before I even pick up a pen.  Do you think this person is right? It seems as though
he is saying unless you are a scholar you should not be writing articles/khutbas?
Is this fear valid reason not to try? Is it better to seek the rewards?  Do you
think there are criteria? What should one look out for when writing?  I often feel
so put down even though I try to believe it is merely an advice or criticism for
the sake of Allah, but I am beginning to doubt it is the truth.
Any comments?
Jazakumu Allahu Khairan
