Salaam! Insah'allah I will be in attendance. I was planning to go with another sister, but she is scheduled to get married mid-August. (You know how these weddings have a way of just popping up at the last minute...taheehee!) 10 parallel sessions!!!   That doesn't include the MSA sessions btw ... Some renown speakers are missing: - Mokhtar Maghroui - Zayd Shaker - Ja'far Idris - Yusuf Islam Some new ones are there: - Anwar Awlaki And some that are always there: - Hamza Yusuf - Abdullah Idris - Siraj Wahhaj - Jamal Badawi - Muhammad Yacoubi The MSA program looks better to me than the ISNA program, overall.  Check it out: http://www.shuaibshakoor.com/msa_national/home.html Click on the "program" link.

She caused controversy when she wore a headscarf to take her oath in parliament. She was forced out of the chamber by hecklers led by Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. Secular parliamentarians regarded her headscarf as an improper intrusion of religion into politics. Headscarves are banned in government offices, schools, and universities. The country's constitution is founded on secularism, but the Virtue Party supports the introduction of Islamic Law. Kavakci currently resides in the United States with her husband and two children.

SalaamAlaikum I can tell you who Umar Farooq Abdullah is.  He lives in Chicago. He is the current Nawawi Foundation scholar in residence. This is what it says on their website: Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah Chairman & 2000-2002 Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah (Wymann-Landgraf) is an American Muslim, born in 1948 to Protestant family of the Midwest. Early in 1970, he embraced Islam in Ithaca, New York while studying English literature at Cornell University as a Woodrow Wilson honorary fellow. He then changed his field of study and transferred to the University of Chicago in 1972, where he received with honors his doctorate in 1978 for a dissertation pertaining to the origins of Islamic Law. He taught at the Universities of Windsor (Ontario), Temple, and Michigan from 1977 until 1982, when he left America to teach Arabic in Granada (Spain). In 1984, he was appointed to the Department of Islamic Studies at King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah and taught Islamic studies and comparative religions there until 2000. During his years abroad, Dr. Abd-Allah had the fortune to study with several traditional Islamic teachers. He has written and published in Arabic and English, is fluent in Arabic, and acquainted with several ancient and modern tongues. He returned to Chicago in August of 2000 to work as general director of the newly founded Nawawi Foundation and, in conjunction with this postition, is now teaching in Chicago and conducting research in Islamic studies and cognate fields

[slm] seeing the programs makes it harder not going :( anyways, one thing caught my eye...anyone notice that in the program "Introduction to Variant Readings of the Qur'an", Michael Sells is one of the speakers... If anyone doesn't remember the name...he is the guy dubbed by many on this board as the "moustache guy" everyone raved about on the PBS Islam documentary...Interesting that he is scheduled to be there... slm, we're leaving tomorrow (thursday) afternoon, inshallah and driving all night so we can make it there for jummah inshallah :) its a long drive, but its worth it ;-D hope to meet some of you fine folks this year.. i'll be the kid with glasses and the nametag that says 'meraj', in case you were wondering ;) for those who are able to make it, inshallah hope you have safe journies and enjoy yourselves and benefit from all the weekend has to offer.. for thos who cant, inshallah maybe next time.. and you'll be remembered by the rest of us there :) we'll be sure to share our experiences and knowledge we acquired there. over and out :)
