| Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh Here's another story from the Arab News of today's (23 Jun 2001) issue. If the information is not newsworthy, please let me know. Tell me when the GMC trucks have gone... Tourists from all over the Kingdom are arriving in Jeddah in droves to enjoy the shopping or picnicking at what is left of the Corniche. Having said that, we are also seeing a marked increase in the number of GMCs at Al-Tahliyah Street and other areas where women frequent. Lots of cars with tinted glasses are seen coming from outside the city, and it is no longer strange to see a GMC truck speeding along the main thoroughfares without a rear license plate. As for the phone numbers that are being thrown at families who are on the road just for a change in routine, they are too numerous to count. Some people come to Jeddah thinking that every woman, who is seen walking on the street or shopping, is willing to flirt and receive the phone numbers that are thrown at her. The situation has worsened to an extent that some families living in Jeddah no longer leave their houses or go out until they know for sure that the GMCs driven by such youths have long gone. The problem is that some of these youths enjoy a luxurious life, with everything - from matches to cars - provided to them by their parents. Then their parents expect them to act morally when they themselves probably make no initiative to groom their children, except provide them with everything. What we have said is nothing new. What is new is that novel methods of flirting and harassment have emerged following the mushrooming of satellite TV channels. The process of modernization has elevated the tastes of people and also increased knowledge in other societies. Despite modernization, some of our youth have failed to cash in on the process.
