| assalaamu alaikum George Orwell that is. Whilst browsing www.worldnetdaily.com i came across an article whose opening paragraph read: "June 25 — Are you watching your television set or is it watching you? The same technologies that are threatening privacy on the Internet — including consumer data collection, profiling and targeted advertising — are now being adopted by the U.S. television industry, according a report to be released Tuesday." [http://www.worldnetdaily.com/frame/direct.asp?SITE=msnbc.com/news/592190.asp?0dm=C17RB] What it discusses is a soon-to-be released report claiming that the very boxes you have on/in your TV that receive the digital TV signals are performing a second function, being used to collect information on your watching habits and then transmitting that back to the service provider who would use the info to sell more products to you. Lets take this forward another step. If they have the capability to transmit data back, whose to say that one day you may end up with a TV which has a hidden camera installed inside of it, and while you're watching X-Files, its transmitting data back of you and your family in your living room. | [slm] This is sort of related. I was watching Question Time last week. Its a programme where a panel of politicians and other famous and influential figures are asked question from an audience. One of the questions was about mobile phone text messages sent to young people over the pre-election period. Apparently the labour government sent out text messages to thousands of young people, saying that they would extend alcohol licensing hours if they were elected. But how did the government get these mobile phone numbers?? And how did they know these people were all young people?? . . . . . |
