Assalamu Alaikum, Regarding lowering the gaze, I know that the first (accidental) look is allowed, but the second is forbidden. I was wondering if there is anything like this for seeing inside the homes of others without their permission. In my area, it is quite difficult to avoid seeing the interiors of other peoples' homes (many of them leave their doors/windows wide open), especially at night and when driving. I do know that there is a hadith where the Prophet [saw] said that it is lawful for the owner of the house to put out the eye of the person who looks inside without permission. Is the first look allowed but the second forbidden for seeing inside houses too? Does anyone have anything on this? Asalaamu Alaikum ;-) I think this may be the Hadith you meant: Sahl b. Sa'd as-Sa'idi reported that a person peeped through the hole of the door of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and he had with him some pointed thing with which he had been adjusting (the hair of his head). Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to him: If I were to know that you had been peeping. I would have thrust it in your eyes. Allah has prescribed seeking permission because of protection against glance[Muslim] |

Bismillah and salam, Yes houses have their 7urumat. You're not supposed to look inside. If the doors are open I guess it is lowering the gaze just like with people whether they are dressed properly or not, you should practice it. That hadeeth I always thought was the most angry sounding one from the prophet. He was usually so gentle, even though he had the power of many men he has only killed one in his entire life becuase that man had promised to kill him. He saws never got mad for his own self but only for Allah's sake, even when he was hurt by magic he forgave that man. But the point is his anger should tell us how serious this sin is. From his adab(manners) when at someone's door and you ring or knock then you face another direction. |

Salam'alaykum, Since we're talking about it... I wonder what happens if people can see us (muslim women) in our houses. Are we guilty of a sin even if we do our best to hide ourselves? I mean, we can't live in the darkness all day long, we need to pull up the blinds to have some light inside. What if people happen to see us? Wassalam |
