Does anyone wear contact lenses?
What are your views on wearing coloured ones?
Do you know anyone who wears coloured lenses?

salam,

hmmmm lets see....

1) i dont wear glasses, i sed to but not anymore, i hated them,

2) i dont wear contacts, and yes the reason is because im afraid of pokign my eye out!

3) hmm as far as i noe, colored contacts are haram because they change the look of a person, just as we had the discussion of plucking your eyebrows, its haram to do because they change your look, so colored contacts change ur look even more,

4) sadly yes i do know muslims who have been told its haram to wear colored contacts but still do.......

Wa alaikum assalam Zara,

Interesting topic :)

I do wear glasses on occasion, usually for night driving or if I am sitting at the back in a lecture - I am slightly nearsighted.  Anyways, I hadn't even thought about wearing contacts for a while because I also have astigmatism (causes things to blurr out when looked at from a distance). Only recently did special contact lenses become available on the market for that (the lense are weighted so that they don't rotate in the eye). But I can't be bothered with them since I don't wear my glasses that frequently anyway.

Colour lenses...hmmm, I think they'd look stupid on me 8-D

I just wear glasses for night driving and sometimes for day driving. ;)  I once went to the doctors office to try on contacts and I was like what is this stuff?  You want me to put this in my eye? ???  No thank you. :)

About colored contacts I don't know if that would be classified as haraam because its something temporary and not permanent.  Like henna is ok, but permanent tatoos are haraam.  You would have to ask a scholar about this.

There is an alternative and that's laser eye surgery.  I know one brother who did it and he turned out ok,alhumdullilah.  The price has come down a lot.  Its now like $1200 to $1500 (maybe less) for both eyes.  And you won't need glasses or contacts again.  Check with your doctor for details.

I've worn contact lenses for years. Has anyone else noticed that their eyes got more sensitive to sunlight once they started wearing contacts?

I've never poked my eyes out. I have stopped all foot traffic in the vicinity of my desk when one fell out at work and forced all passers by to help me look for it. Many people on their knees carefully feeling around on the carpet. Now I use disposables, so it doesn't matter so much if one gets lost.

About colored contacts. For people with dark eyes, you have to buy the really expensive kind to actually change your eye color. Plus, the colored part of the lens isn't that big, so I've noticed a lot of people who wear them have this really weird alien-looking dark ring around whatever color of contact lens they're wearing. I'd hate to pay all that money and end up looking like I came from outer space.

Who really wants purple eyes anyway?

Sssshh. Don't tell my mom! Otherwise I would have to endure double doses of carrots and carrot juice whenever she gets hold of me ;)

Anyone like freshly squeezed carrot juice? Not me, it tastes funny like medicine. Mixing with another juice doesn't help either.

Beta carotene is a source of vitamin A, which is supposedly good for the eyes and skin. I am not sure if it is any good for correcting acuity problems though. For poor acuity try some simple eye exercises.

I have been wearing glasses since my early teens. I am slightly shortsighted and use a -1.0 diopter lens. Glasses are convenient and look good too :) So no contacts for me.

Anyone want to share there how I-broke-my-glasses story?
Anyone want to share there how I-broke-my-glasses story?
After I broke mine for the 2nd consecutive time playing basketball, that's when I decided to get contacts!

Man, contacts are much more convenient, for many reasons.

One, you can play basketball with ease :)

Two, you can lie down on a pillow, on your right side, and read a book (You can't do it with glasses ... trust me, I've tried).

Three, you don't have to take your glasses off everytime you make wudoo or pray!

Four, no glare!

Five, peripheral vision is *much* clearer with contacts!

Six, a spectacles-less face.  It's your natural look!

Contacts have its minuses:

It's a pain to take them out every night before going to sleep at first.  But you get used to it, especially if you're a routined person.  If you brush your teeth every night before going to sleep, you just add 5 more minutes of washing lenses to that routine.

It's always a pain to find contacts when you drop them in the sink or anywhere outside!

My eyes hurt terribly when I was in Karachi.  All the dust and pollution gets inside the eyes, and gets stuck behind the lenses (between the lens and your cornea).  Man, that's a pain!

Also If you're in college, and you're the typical student who gets an average of 3 hours of sleep during Finals, then contact lenses are a pain.  It's painful to put them on when your eyes have been deprived of sleep.

So there you have it.  The pluses and minuses.  Overall, I give a thumbs up to contact lenses.  Although, interestingly enough, I'm wearing glasses right now as I write this :)

They are good protection from errant pebbles during the Jamarat. And that is not an exagerration.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

I wear glasses.. 8-) (minus the cig)

the pro's...

first of all, people automatically assume you're intelligent :)  If you have a far off look in your eyes, either from being half asleep or being utterly confused by something, people assume you're in deep contemplation on some higher intellectual plane.. match up the glasses with a hand on your chin and a "hmm" and people think you're brilliant :P

Malcolm X wore glasses :)

secondly, being able to take your glasses off whenever you want grants you the ability to blur and kind of quiet everything around you.. it's an easy way to force yourself to focus internally instead of externally.. this is a definite plus after salah, in that it helps keep you focused on dhikr and not on checking out the ring the sister next to you is wearing or the new hair style that brother's rocking, etc..

they're also just *easy*.  you stick 'em under the tap for two seconds in the morning and you're good to go.  You don't have to worry about solutions or eye drops or any of that kinda stuff.. they're perfect for those of us who are lazy or forgetful or (ahem) both.

Lastly, you don't stab little pieces of plastic in your eyes.  that's a definite plus for me.

wasalaamu alaykum :)

aaaah, se7en, se7en, se7en, you just don't know. I completely agree with Arsalan. Contacts  are so much more effecient for every point he mentioned. Yes, I went though that rough phase of wearing glasses, then...I was brought into the light...contacts. My reasons are that, 1) they don't keep falling off your face 2) you don't have to go back every month to have them adjusted 3) they aren't something extra on your face...4) contacts are just better  5) this number represents an infinite number of positive sides to wearing them
And I'm not saying that there aren't bad sides...yes, they do tend to get dry and stuck to your eyeball, but no biggie, that's what ReNu is for... and no, you don't have to jam you fingure in your eye to get them in there...
ok, and what if Malcom X jumped off a bridge, would you?
well, this is just my theory of contacts
oh, and that 2nd point? hmm...hey Jannah, I think Se7en deserves that 'madina geek' title...
alright se7en, you know I'm joking, I love you man!

Yellow and dark green vegetables and fruits are good dietary sources of the carotenes (includes beta-carotene), which serves as precursors of vitamin A. Vitamin A is required for the maintenance of vision, maintenance of reproduction, promotion of growth, differentiation and maintenance of epithelial tissue; gene expression.
Carotenes also help in decreasing the risk of certain cancers, for example, lung cancer.

I have to agree with Se7en, glasses do rock. Hey until laser eye surgery is a common procedure to the point where surgeons can do it with their eyes shut, then I'll still be wearing glasses.

Tips for ppl who need to get corrective lenses and want to get glasses:

1. If you can afford it get the featherweight glasses. Remember titanium? Hehe its not only used on the NASA space shuttle, it's also used on glasses, and laptops but thats something else. So yeah get the titanium frame glasses.

2. Get the featherweight lenses, much lighter than actual glass.

3. Go for the auto lens shading feature, basically it works like this. You got out into the sun your lenses shade up so it looks you are wearing a pair of shades. Heh can ppl who wear contacts do that? No, they have to go out and buy another pair of shades :)

So a combo of those 3 elements and you've got yourself a super light, slick pair of glasses. Plus you can pick out some neat stylish frames.

Trust me, I have been wearing glasses since I was 7, heh it's been a while.

I wear contacts during the day and glasses in the evening to de-stress my tired eyes.  I agree with Arsalan that contacts are the best...Although glasses to give you a more intelectual look, but hey they are more hassle especially when you keep forgetting where you put them ahem...

I have got myself a pair of titanium frames Doc - what's wrong with buying a pair of regular sunglasses???

As for coloured lenses yep I know people who wear them.  I think they may be permissible because like br.Arshad said they are temporary.  The only thing that deters me from wearing coloured lenses is because of what happenened to a sister...

At the begining of the 2nd academic year at university she decided to wear coloured lenses...However she got alot of attention from practicing brothers they started giving their salaams to her...she didn't notice the extra attention, being rather oblivious to the third party...anyway after about six months she switched to clear lenses..and yep the brothers no longer offered their salaams...kinda shows that yep people still think beuty is only skin deep...

When I was in High School,(before this laser surgery thing was popular) my Calculus teacher got her contacts surgically implanted into her eyes! :o:o:o  It was soo scary! because for a few weeks after she came back, there was like this thin bloody border around her eyeballs!!  Anyways, apparently it was some experimental surgery that only 10 other people in the nation agreed to or something...straaaange...

Woah, how on earth can one figure out someones eye color *without* staring? Where is the lowering of the gaze? And to think that brothers can do this *before* deciding to say salaam or not during the usual casual encounters that occur on campuses? (not face-to-face talk). Alhamdulillah, I am glad I have poor eyesight. It is much easier to control the gaze when you only see straight on :)

Talking about blood colored eyes, I once broke my glasses and a shard hit my eye. Alhamdulillah, it just injured the white of the eye and did not damage the cornea. But the next two weeks or so the whites of my eye was blood red! People really freaked out after seeing me like that :)

Those were the old days. Nowadays poly carbonate lenses are very light and shatter resitant.

I agree with the majority, Contacts are teh best and totally worth it.
but i can remember the first day i got them. I was sitting at the doctors office..and the plastic things would no go in my eye!! I tried like 20 times..and i started getting impatient. All the doctor could say is..its ok..when u can get them in and out once..u can go home. WEll i eventually got them in alhamdulilah..
took me a couple of weeeks..and then i got used to them.

yes glasses were kewl at one time..when i was in middle school..but once i got past the pink plastic frames.. i vowed to never wear them ever again..and i cant explain how happy i am that i didnt. U should see my 8th grade pic..ALL u albanians..dont u dare look it up!

anways...about the color contacts..at one time i was into them..and now i just find them unecessary..why cant we just be happy with the way Alla(swt) created us?..its the nafs..and its shahawat(desires).

I don't want to put y'all off the idea of wearing contacts but i have heard of a death caused by contacts because someone went to sleep wearing them and the lenses got in to their brain causing their death...

As for my glasses well I have plastic lenses because i can't trust myself with glass..The amount of times I drop my frame on the floor they wouldn't last me a day...

:) just a few facts sis, I thought they would prove how *safe* contact lenses are.  I know i should be more careful with my lenses..Actually i think I may revert back to glasses, I had an opticians appointment and i need to change my lenses to toric lenses which will be better for my astigmatism..Astigmatism is a condition where by your eye shape is not round more rugby ball shape :o (I am referring to the lenses inside eye not the actual eye!) the eye is usually round and normal corrective lenses cater for this.  Anyways new lenses mean adding more pounds to my direct-debit..
