This appears on p. 54 of the latest (July/August 1422/2001) issue of Islamic Horizons (ISNA's official magazine).  It appears in Dr. Siddiqui's Q&A section:

Q. I am a 14-year old revert to Islam.  My family is not supportive of my decision, and I'm afraid that if I practice openly I will face many problems and maybe even kicked out of the house.  Should I delay my shahadah until I am on my own?  Should I practice Islam only partially by not worrying about halal food or wearing hijab or jilbab (I'm at a private Catholic school and have to wear a certain uniform)?  If I do so, will I be punished?  Is there a chat room or web site for people in my situation?

A. Your situation is akin to that of many early Muslims in Makkah who endured great hardship.  Insha Allah, there is a great reward and blessing waiting for you.  Being 14, you are an adult according to the Shari'ah but still a minor under American law.  I recommend that you stay with your parents as long as possible.  Do not postpone your shahadah, but say it in your heart.  Don't tell your parents that you are a Muslim, but practice Islam privately as much as you can.  What you cannot observe will not be held against you: "Allah does not place a burden upon a sould beyond what it can bear."  (2:286)

Whenever you have chance, tell your parents about the beauty of Islam and its teachings.  Do not argue or make them angry, but be good and gentle, and avoid as much as possible anything that is forbidden.

At 18, you can declare openly your Islam.  I hope by that time your parents will accept you.  Read the accounts of some American women who went through similar situations, such as Daughters of Another Path  (Carol Anway) and The Sun is Rising in the West: New Muslims Tell About Their Journey to Islam (Muzaffar Haleem and Betty Bowman).  You may visit Jannah.org to search for suitable chat rooms and  web sites.
