Assalamu Alaikum

I am not the most eloquent of people. But currently I have a friend
aged 53 - maybe too old to change? who is so anti organised religion as he
calls it. I was ready to blow a fuse and unfortunately this is not a
good thing when you are trying to explain why Islam is the truth.

I was wondering if any converts to Islam could share anything that
moved them when they first realsied that Islam was true? I am thinking
about buying him Quran and make him read it? But it maybe too heavy to
start with. I ned help.

Desperate sister.

A.W.W.
In the name of Allah, the most merciful the most gracious.

Age is just a number, being 53 or 25 years of age dosen't make a differnce. The main thing is you should die as a Muslim or Muslimah.

The Quran is a good source to start with. Theres also this board, numerous other web sites that have conversion stories etc etc.

But ask your friend one thing, is there such a thing as common sense ? If so define it ?
Then ask your friend out of all the ways of the world, is there a way or conduct or code of life that is common sense ? If so what is it ?
You can look to the west or look to the east, yet there is only one religion that has the complete code of life from death to birth. Yes this is the one religion that tells you how to go into the toilet, how to eat and drink, how to sleep, how to wear clothes, how to have kids, how to etc etc. No other religion covers your whole life as Islam does. Islam is not a religion its a way of life, a common sense of life.

Hope it helps

As salamu alaykum Sis,

Since I don't know much about the relationship it is hard to say, but maybe you are pushing too hard.  I think that you need to be more subtle in your efforts, especially if he does not seem to be listening.  I basically have the same problem except that it is my parents.  One thing that I can suggest is that you constantly make dua to Allah (swt) since He is the one who opens our hearts.

As salamu alaykum

asalaamu alaikum,

when I was pressured, I back away

like when you try to coax a rabbit out of it's burrow, it doesn't come,

but leave it alone, and leave the food there, and slowly it sniffs it's surroundings and soon is out in the light

lead by example is the best way...

asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

Asalaamu aleikoum,

Bismillah-hir Rahman-ir Raheem.

Speaking from personal experience (and I stress that this is only a reflection on how I felt, not a blanket generalisation), in the hope that some of it may hold true for your friend, when people speak of being against "organised religion" they can mean any or all of the following:

1. Disillusionment with Christianity in general.  In this society we are lead to believe that Christianity is the only (true) religion and therefor if one cannot find the truth in Christianity then they must look to secular sources.

2. Disillusionment with "the Church" or leading figures in "the Church" in particular.  For example, many find it unpalatable that the Christian church espouses the virtue of poverty (Prophet Jesus was poor they say) and yet many bishops live (in some cases literally) in palaces.

3. Reluctance to accept restraints on their behaviour, the meaning of which is not immediately clear to them.  For example, when I first became Muslim I told a friend that I had stopped drinking as a result of my reversion, to which they replied that they saw no reason why religion should interfere with anyone's social life.

For what it's worth, I think that you should inform your friend of those elements of Islam that are not immediately "religious" in their nature, such as the scientific wonders in the Holy Quran, the totally just social infrastructure that Islam builds, its flexibility or how Western society has taken elements of the Islamic model into its own society (for example divorce).  Insha' Allah this will engage his interest and whet his appetite for more information.  Once he begins his quest for knowledge about Islam he will, Insha' Allah, find it impossible to give up.

By the way, don't tell him just how wrong he is at the moment: let him realise that himself.

Insha' Allah, I will remember you both in my prayers.  May Allah reward you for your efforts.

Bismillah and salam,
There are some great lecture (if memory serves me right on liveislam) about how to talk to atheist. Like the logic of it. I have a videow by shaikh zanadani. He says to first start from scratch. does nothing create anything? Is anything created from nothing? If the person believes in the new idol nature nowadays to be God then he has some great arguments. many masha'Allah have reverted due to this logic. One of the examples is you say that see this light bulb, all the properties in it tell you something about it's makor but not everything. That he knows about wiring and electricity doesn't mean it is electricity. And that a certain knowledge seems to exist beyond that which we SEE. like how is it prepared for a world it doesn't know yet? If it is nature than it wouldn't always be like that, each plant has a certain height and charactes that help it survive to the environment. The particular example that comes to mind is when he said doens't the engineers and astrominors and people of knowledge prepare the ones going off in space shuttles with the proper food, clothes, breathing? How did a baby have eyes when it was all the time in the womb in darkness? or eyelashes? or skin that works for outside? there is prior knowledge that it will come out, it didn't evolve to fit it.
I was also taught that some believe in A god but not religion because they think it is corrupted. if this is the case, then you take a different approach which is also very logical of how islam is a way of life and is not been changed.(if you need some supporting arguments write back and say this is the case ok). also A god would not put everyone here and just leave them to be tested one day without any guidelines or help or anything. If they are not sure if there is such a day, say the concept of karma seems to be a good way to get people thinking. If they see it in their lives what goes around comes around thing, then say this is the small picture there is a bigger justice system later.
