Inshallah me and my family will be going to Washington DC for a week in mid July. I know there are many museums and places to see - but since I will be there for only a week(actually 5 days) I would like to know what are the must see there specially with children(6 and 4 years) ? ALso are there any halal restaurant and masjid/Islamic center in the downtown area -thats where we will be staying, Inshallah ?
Jazak Allah khair for any tips.

As salamu alaykum tq,

Since no one has responded I'll give it a go, since I was in DC years ago for a visit.  The kids will love the Air and Space Museum.  Even for a Muslim the Vietnam Memorial is impressive.  Go and see the Constitution.  Take a tour of the White House, it's free.  So is a tour of Congress.

As for food it is very expensive so bring what you can with you.  We had a really nice meal in China Town.  I don't know about Halal restaurants.

There is a mosque in the embassy section that has a book store.

I might suggest that you get a book about DC from the library.

Insha'Allah this is a little bit of help for you.  Have fun insha'Allah.

As salamu alaykum

slm,

a little over a week ago i was in maryland and we went to DC to sightsee.. to be honest, besides the big things (the capitol, white house, smithsonian) theres not a ton of stuff to do within DC itself.. maybe that just me, but the most fun i had was riding the metro ;-D .. however theres lots to do around the DC area (maryland, north virginia).. we didnt have much time to actually do a lot but i hear theres lots of sights to see and places to visit in the area.

I checked DC,Smithsonian website and there are couple of places that looked interesting. Air and SPace is one of them and also there is a birds museum which looks fun (my older one was studying about the bird in his school so it will be interestind for him).
Thanks!

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

That's true, there's nothing really exciting about DC's historical buildings (unless you're the tourist-y type, which would be a good thing at DC).  But if you have time, try to check out the Islamic Center on Mass Ave.  Here's a link with a pic!

The address is 2551 Massachusetts Avenue NW, it's amazing, masha'Allah.  There's also a bunch of other nearby masjids in Silver Springs (MCC, ISM) and College Park (Dar-us-Salaam).  Virginia also has a close by, active masjid, Dar-ul-Hijrah.
In any case, enjoy your stay!
