Wedding dresses!

Salam Sisters

I was wondering if any sisters could give me ideas on wedding dresses.
I am Indian but the dress we wear is usally a sari (with no scarf!!).
Not too keen on having my midriff and hair shown. But if I do go to
India everyone will say why are you covering you hair when getting married
blha blah.

So I need some ideas, shop names on how to look chic with a scarf!

Im not too sure I'm keen on a white wedding dress. Ive tried looking
for some Pakistani wedding dresses on the web but most of them have
become so fashionable with midriff showing and no scarves!! Can anyone
direct me to a good site where girls actually have more than dental floss
for their dresses?

Thanks!!

Sister why don't u wear gagras or lengas, they can be nice and traditional;)
In most indian shops u should get a range of scarfs, u could pick 1 which is mnot transparent, this way ur hair wont show;)

oh yeah congratulations,
take care.

wlm,

Most of the sisters here wear lengha's for their wedding dresses. There are so many different designs and colors. I've seen gold and yellow, darkgreen and gold, pink and purple, just red, off yellow, maroon, pink and green, peacock blue, etc. So they have the long skirt the top and then the heavy heavy wedding dupatta thing. They usually wear a tight scarf underneath that covers their hair and then drape the wedding dupatta over that.

If ur going to India there will be a huge selection to choose from and at good prices. You can even buy a dress and then buy some matching material to make a scarf for underneath. All the wedding dresses I've seen have the dupatta thing with it. It's a tradition to have that. And if you really wanted you could surely design your own dress while ur there :)

If you are going to India, it woudl be better to buy from there -As jannah mentioned better design, cloth quality and definitely better price.
Also if it is family tradition sort of a thing and you have to wear sari , you can always get the blouse stiched with long full sleeves and longer lenght(up to the sari), and can wear a mathching hijab.

ok but which part of India can I buy the lengha stuff
cheaper? I come from a part of India which has great beaches but BAD fasion
sense!

Plus buying matching material can be hard for the scarf.I want to make
a scarf into a midora.

My sister got married with the long sleeved sari and well it looked
just okay. I think the lengha idea is better.

Assalamu Alaikum,

Its sad that most of the Pakistani models are modelling sleeveless/stomachless/backless/transparent clothing, BUT that doesn't mean that there's nothing else out there.  Here's what I have been doing. (I'm in the process of designing my wedding outfit as well)  I have been checking out maaad sites looking for something stylish and cool.  You see most outfits are "riggable", meaning the style can be altered to fit the needs of the hijabi bride.  So anytime I see a short sleeved outfit I think--nice style, I'll just add sleeves.  Or, "hmm that outfit would be soo pretty if it just covered my stomach".  So I took a bunch of different outfits and cut and pasted them into a word document, wrote some notes about what I liked about each outfit and emailed it to my mother-in-law :)  (She's really cool alhamdulillah!)

Here's some sites:

http://www.pakistaniwedding.com (click on bridal link)
http://www.hipakistan.com (click on fashion link)
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Picture/9495/
http://www.asiana2z.com/links/pages/Pakistan/Fashion/ (this has lots of links)

you might want to do an advanced google search on:

pakistani bridal fashion boutique

(not one phrase, but search all words)

Anyways, after you pick out the styles you like, take the picture (printout/copy/whatever) to any tailor or boutique in either Paki and India, explain EXACTLY how you want it, and bada-bing! You've got yourself a stylish, modest wedding outfit! :)

Hope that helps Insha'Allah,

Wassalam

Coming from an American culture- where the bride wears white, I find it amusing that you all wear different colors when getting married.

When you get married- what color- and why?

My first marriage I wore ivory, second- peach lace. Third...hmmm...:)

wlm,
btw here's another good site on wedding fashion visagepk.com

hmm i think we just like color...no doubt there are some beautiful white wedding dresses out there but sometimes they just look boring... this is supposed to be a happy once in a lifetime type of occassion and it's fun to vary what you wear to colors you like or look good on you.

i think the dark maroon/red color looks the best on me or the gold/whitish ones so i'd go for those... I liked B28 and B30 myself ;)

ooh! i forgot about visagepk.com.  I looove the clothes in that magazine!  Buuut, the website doesn't show all of their stuff :(  Maan, that magazine costs like 200 rs in Pakistan, which is about $4!  Which is crazy expensive for a mag in pakiland!  But i found the most amazing outfit in one of the magazines, i want it for my valima insha'Allah! :)

Take Care,

ohh thanks for those sites they really helped. The girls (the
ones who werent wearing dental floss) looked really elegant especially
since some of them were not dragged down by heavy gold like Mr T from
the A-Team, something my poor sister faced :(

I liked b-130011 (page 2's) hair. Think I might suprise(shock) my
husabnd to be with that style :)

Now I am curious as to what other muslim cultures wear on their wedding
days. I know arab culture wear the white gown. How about Malaysian or
Sudanesean?

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

We don't have like a fixed particular color that everyone has to wear, but usually, we wear white, off white, cream, ivory, or such for the nikah... but we wear other colours under the sun for the walimah.... Usually, the nikah and walimah are held at different dates, but even if it is a 1 day affair (ie. nikah and walimah), some brides have a change of clothes, still. In fact. in our weddings, there r loads of change of clothes. And the bride and groom kinda wear the same color.

You might like to check out this website (most if not all of the pictures are of real brides/grooms]:

For this site => Galleria Pengantin U gotta click on the pictures individually under Koleksi Foto, coz, the pics don't come out automatically.

I'll also include some examples of the Bridal Suites , where we decorate our rooms for our weddings.

Hope this helps, inshaAllah :-)

Assalamu alaikum,
Now I am curious as to what other muslim cultures wear on their wedding days. I know arab culture wear the white gown
N. African weddings (Libyan, Tunesian, Algerian Moroccan and Mauritanian) are still very traditional and the brides there still fashion the cultural dresses - masha'Allah they are sooo beautiful and colourful.

It is unfortunate that in my culture (Palestinian) and other Chami cultures, the traditional dress is rarely seen at weddings and has been replaced by the white dress in the name of modernity. But I think there are small Palestinian villages in the West Bank that still practise old cultural customs when it comes to weddings. The wedding is traditionally a 2-3 days affair. There is even a henna night for the bride-to-be and her female friends and relatives.  Then during the wedding, there is a 'samir' or 'sahra' in an open field where the women chant folkloric anasheed and the men dance dabkeh. Even the men dressed in traditional gowns together with the 7attah (black and white chechered head cover; i.e. the thing that Yassir Arafat wears on his head) and '3qaal (the black rope (?) that holds the 7attah tightly and securely on the head).

My brother's wedding few years ago was done almost all by european standards, but we added a little touch of culture and hired a traditional dabkeh band (men with tablehs and bagpipes) who sang and danced during the zaffeh part of the wedding (i.e. when the bride left the home of her father and again when the bride and groom entered the wedding hall together). It was sooooo beautiful and memorable. Our relatives were saying that that was the most exciting wedding they've been too in years and years :)

Take care y'all.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahamtAllah,

El-Funoun!!!!!!!!!!

There's this old spanish brother in our community, he has these tatoos all over his hands and arms.. he became Muslim when he was 17, when he was a sailor.. he's traveled everywhere, has all these amazing stories about the places he's been, the things he's experienced.. and one cd he always listens to is of traditional Palestinian music by el-funoun :)

He said he bought it because it reminded him of this huuuge wedding he attended in Palestine back in the day.. he said that the Israeli's hated it but they used to play the songs anyway..

My brother actually got the cd as well, he said he's gonna play it at *his* wedding inshaAllah and all the brothers are going to dance dabkeh ;)

classy!!!

But is the head gear a new feature in malay dresses because they seemed
to have mixed thr head gear with the white wedding dresses of the west.

assalam alaikum sisters!

AlSundus.com specializes in wedding wear that is islamically appropriate. They modify styles that you have in mind
(especially if you have a pic that you like) and make it islamic!

Don't worry you can be chic and still wear an islamic wedding dress.
I once had a sari altered a longer vest which covered the mid section
:) and a beautiful matching scarf!

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

I came across this wedding dress-hijab-long veil-tiara ensemble, and I love it! (I'd lengthen the hijab, but otherwise, I love it!). :-)

It reminds me of Robin Hood, when the English miladies used to wear hijab (well, depends on which movie you watch) :)

Hope you like it too, and probably give some ideas, inshaAllah :)

If anyone needs some sites with some good clothes, some of which can be for a hijabi, try riyaindia.com , suratsaree.com or bombayfashion.com(got 3 nice shalwar kameezes for a 100$ here).
