| Amongst the early Muslims was Haatim al-Samm (d. 237 AH) who was known by the nickname of being the Luqman of this ummah. He once said "There are three characteristics i possess which always allow me to defeat the one I debate with: when the one whom i debate is correct, i am happy, and when he is mistaken i become saddened and i preserve myself by not acting ignorantly towards him." When this reached Imam Ahmed, he said "Subhanallah! There is nobody as intelligent as this man!" 'When the one whom i debate is correct, i am happy,' Haatim al-Samm would not take the position, 'i have to be right, and he is my opponent so he has to be wrong.' On the contrary, Haatim would be happy because he would come out having been guided away from a mistake. 'and when he is mistaken i become saddened,' Haatim would not be happy to see that the person he was debating was wrong, because the person might be going astray, or committing a sin, etc. He would be saddened to see that the person had missed the truth. 'and i preserve myself by not acting ignorantly to him.' | Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu SubhaanAllaah, it is such a shame, nay a tragedy, that we have such amazing examples laid out before us, yet many of us still remain in the ignorant, uncouth state which is so unbefitting for a muslim. This post is a prime example. I have come across many, many muslims in university who are keen on giving islamic dawa, walhamdulillaah, but they lack the basic aadaab of doing so. May are arrogant in their approach, and make the person reciving the dawa feel tiny. They lead people through langthy arguments, hoping they will give the wrong answer so they may continue with their line of debate. Mocking and belittlement almost seem a prerequisite of debate to many of these people. So much can be learned and so much dawa given from simple Islamic aadaab and akhlaaq, thus its saddening that many people are turned away from islam due to the bad akhlaaq of the particular muslim they are debating with. | [slm] excellent guidance, two thumbs up :) inshaAllah we can take this example and keep it as a reminder for ourselves when we deal with people...and perhaps when you meet the 'arrogant' brothers, you can simply remind them of being a good example to others by telling them about this story. inshaAllah it will humble them, as it has humbled me and you won't need to complain of their behaviour anymore. wasalaam, Ahmed |
