Bridal beauty secrets??

Assalamu alaykum,

Since you guys brought up weddings i was wondering what traditional beautification rituals are usually done for the bride in eastern cultures? I remember seeing this somali bride once being washed with huruud (huluud?) mixed with some other herbs. At the wedding she just GLOWED!!!

Let's see, I have seen brides take showers and wax before their weddings. :)

I think i will stick to the shower only, the usual routine.

people put haldi on, this yellow stuff that you put in your food too. No one in my family has ever done it so I don't know what it does for you. but i have heard of it. People from India, pakistan do it.
Probably sri lanka too. I don't know if they do it in Afghanistan. Does anyone know?

some paks/indos told me about that yellow stuff..i think it's tumeric...? this girl used to put it on often...she'd just get a piece of fresh tumeric n wipe it around her face etc...n i think she rinsed afterwards? i don't remem...it's supposed to give u a 'yellow complexion' i guess? i'm not sure if it'll work for all skin color tones though? :p
n i think 'umptoon' or whatever is a paste already made..i remem someone mentioning it before...but i dont' know..? it's probably a paste to lighten ur skin as well..?

r u asking about like cultural things? b/c i think i read somewhere that some middle eastern countries or parts of north africa would bathe the bride to be in perfumed liquids etc...? n put on elaborate hennas etc...

Assalam u Alikum,
Yeah, the yellow stuff used in ubtan is turmeric, dry mustard etc along with other herbs. I used to have a lot of scars on my face, thanks to acne, and I used both ubtan and turmeric and Man,it helps!!!This ubtan i used,it just cleansed and purified ur skin. And it also gives this beautiful glow to ur face.Same goes for turmeric.
Anyway,I guess we are not talking about turmeric or ubtan, this is supposed to be a bridal beauty secrets thread :). All my cousins or friends who are married ,recommend a facial everyweek, atleast 6 weeks before the wedding day. I guess no one really follows the traditonal beauty secrets anymore. But I can ask my Mom or my Nanu(maternal grandma) if u guys want to. By the way,my Nanu advised me to use turmeric on my face, mixec with water to form a paste. And,I am here to prove it helps. W'Allah u alam.

Assalamu alaykum,

yes yes! i'm talking about turmeric and ubtan(whatever that is) :)
I really think that everything we need is found in nature if we just know where to look.Where i come from hardly anybody uses cosmetics and yet they have the best skin textures.

I heard that turmeric mixed with honey ,olive oil, and few drops of lemon is really good for the skin. I like to collect recipes and stuff but never have the time nor the patience to do it :(

So lets keep the suggestions rolling huh sistahs?

Assalam u Alikum,
Oh yeah,I really need all these ideas!!!I used to use a paste made of gram flour with lemon juice, honey, a little turmeric etc for my skin. I have comination skin so if I use something oily it brings more shine to my face and if I use something to dry it up....it REALLY dries it up.So,I am not really happy with it :)
Anyway, sis Lisha, ubtan is this mixture of herbs made of turmeric, dried mustard, sandal and a bunch of other natural stuff which is usually used at weddings for the bride. It enhances the beauty of ones's skin and trust me,IT WORKS!!!Its in a yellow powdered form and u mix it with milk or water to make a thick paste and then rub it on ur face(i heard ppl even use it on the bride's legs, arms etc)and massage the skin with it.
Hmmm..........what else???egg whites are good for oily skin and egg yolks for extremely dry skin. Infact if u got dandruff ,apply an egg yolk/white( depending on the dryness or oiliness of ur hair) mixed with yogurt to ur hair. Leave it there for like 20-30 mins and then wash ur hair with ur shampoo.
I have also used a mixture of powdered amla, ritha and shika-kai( dunno what these are called in english but all of these are herbs) mixed with water to form a frothy liquid and u put it in ur hair and let it stay for like 10-15 mins. This acts like a shampoo.
Well, these are a few things I personally used so am not saying it can work for everyone. And Allah knows better.
And as sis Amal said, keep it rollin', sisters!!! :)
Allah Hafiz.

Found this...

Silky Smooth Skin

One of the problems many women face is taking care of the skin during fasting. It is one of the best periods in the year to start a beauty regimen from
scratch.  The body will detoxify during a month of fasting, when it is a good time to start a healthy diet which will lead to a glowing, silky, smooth skin
by  Eid. A cool glass of milk with crisp vegetables, pasta and yoghurt is better than indulging in greasy, oily pakoras, samosas and fry-ups. The benefits
will soon show up in the way the skin clears itself of blemishes, toxins and oily sebum residue.

When looking after the skin, the first point to remember is that it should also be done gently without harsh scrubbing. Water alone will not remove the
accumulation of dirt, grime, sweat and tiny dead scales. Water merely removes the hydrophile (water soluble) but not the  lipophile (fat soluble)
residues of the skin. Soap has a drying effect and when it is combined with water which is hard, it forms lime which clogs the pores of the skin. Harsh
treatments remove the protective layer which keeps bacteria, germs, and fungus in check and exposes the skin to infection, blackheads and
over-production of sebum leading to a greasy looking skin.

Almost all modern cosmetics are formulated to suit different skin types or combination skins. Milk, cream, foam, syndet, gels and lotions offer a wide
choice in caring for your skin the right way.

Most soaps are alkaline and can attack the natural protective  acid layer to deprive the skin of natural grease and moisture which is essential for healthy
looking skin. It can leave the skin looking brittle, tense and dry. Soap is also not a good option for removing heavy make-up as it often does not
dislodge the colour pigment particles hugging the skin.

Syndets are the newest formulation from the high-tech cosmetics labs and although they look like ordinary soap bars they do not have any alkaline
substances and are more gentle on the skin. They are also perfect for all skin types and syndets come in either solid or liquid form such  as wash bars,
     lotions, cream or foam.

A foam cleansing routine once a week will pay off in a few months. Apply the cream with a soft brush and using a circular motion with your fingers,
distribute all over the face and neck. This will stimulate the blood circulation, remove dead skin and leave the skin free for use of other caring products.
Cleansing milk is particularly gentle on the skin as they contain moisturing substances which rehydrate the skin. Skin creams give a lift to the skin as it
contains a lot of grease as well as extra moisturisers and is ideal for removing heavy make-up. The cream envelops the colour pigment pigments and
lifts them off the skin, without opening up the pores or damaging the surface of the skin. Cleansing oils have the highest grease content and is also very
good for removing heavy make-up or when scrubbing hard skin around the elbows, the knees and the heel and soles of the feet.

Most gels contain ingredients that make the skin feel marvellously cool, fresh and tingling and they are particularly suitable for a tropical climate where
the harsh UV rays of the sun can damage the skin beyond repair. It is always advisable to use a sun-block when out in the sun or when swimming in
chlorinated or salty water. A wide variety of face lotions  help all kinds of skin types by soothing and refreshing the skin and removing any leftover dirt
particles and any greasy film. Lotions help to moisturise dry skin and keep a balance between dry and oily skin patches. However, if you have dry
skin, avoid products that contain alcohol formulations as they take too much moisture out of the skin.

Peeling masks should not be used too frequently –  once a week or once a fortnight is quite sufficient. Masks now come in enticing fragrances, colours
and chemical or herbal formulations. However, you can use the desi recipes that grandmother always recommended. Place cool slices of cucumber to
reduce puffiness of skin around the eyes, used teabags dipped in cold water also use the same trick. The pre-nuptial application of ubtan is never
considered as a skin enhancer after the big day has passed. It is a wonderful skin toner and leaves the whole body feeling smooth and supple. Granny
also always recommended herbal remedies which are now all the rage in the cosmetics industry.  You can never beat nature or natural things to act as
wonders for the skin so whether you shop in that ultra chic beauty counter, parlour or prepare your own recipes, do give them a try.

And remember, the best beauty routine is always helped by a stress-free lifestyle, a good night's sleep, a healthy diet, exercise and plenty of fluids to
flush out the toxins and leave the skin looking smooth, supple, and glowing all the time.

Asalaamu Alaikum all,
I'm kind of new at this, but I thought that since we were on the topic

They're really ugly and I wanna know if theres anything (besides those
awfully painful nose-strips) that can remove them.

I never knew that there were different types of dry skin on your face. One is lack of oil and the other is lack of water. To find out which you  have you make a kissing action with your mouth in front of the mirror and if you see very fine lines around your mouth then your skin needs the hydrating type of moisturiser. I was (typically) using the wrong type but since finding this out I switched and it made a big difference to the amount of spots I get.

Those Brits of you might know Vaseline Intensive Care. Maybe you have it in the US or Canada too? Anyway, I bought a bottle of it, it's a green bottle and has cucumber and Aloe vera and it is *divine*. It is *always* cool on your skin and just soaks in. It's really light and refreshing too. If you *cough* *ahem* just plucked your eyebrows *cough cough* then it's soooooo sooothing or on sunburn or just on tired skin.

No I don't work for Vaseline, but it's really the first cosmetic product that I was really really happy with.

Sr. Jannah, wouldn't we all love to have a stress-free lifestyle and a good night's sleep? Good advice though, if you are in a position to take it!

Assalamu Alaikum,

for any of you wanting redder lips, I read that the following concoction works...

Take two tablespoons of olive oil, mix it with lemon extract.  Put it into a small container and put it on your lips every night before bed.

I'll try it and let you guys know how it works..

Here's a few tips for blackheads:

1) To loosen and cleanse blackheads, make a paste of oatmeal, honey and an eggwhite. Apply to the skin, massage for 10 minutes then rinse with tepid water.

2) For blackheads, make a paste of oatmeal and water.

3) For blackheads, make a paste of almond meal and water.

Nazia, i'm not criticizing you or anyone else who wears make up! :) I wear lipstick occasionally myself. But isn't putting on make up and making ur lips redder by this technique the same thing?

I know that people used to wear make up in the old days too, is that what they did? and that black stuff that ppl put in their eyes, (khol?), did the women go out wearing that? Wondering....

I thought this was a natural way to bring the original color back to your lips... its not like you put it on in the morning before you go out to make ur lips red for the day---its like a treatment...like I said, I really don't know much about it--I just read it on some website.

slm,

Ok, I know this thread has been dead for awhile, but I dug it up in hopes of a revival!

Ok--here are general areas of concern for women (whether they are getting married or not):

Skin
Hair
Weight
Feet (?)

We have discussed most of these, but I would like discuss some of the former in further detail.  I'll start with skin because I talked to this girl and she told me all kinds of secrets!

Most of you indo-paks mentioned "Ubtan" as a nice skin remedy, and I would like to direct your attention towards another natural skin treatment.

Apparently, "basin" mixed with water to form a paste, makes a great mask.  It is said to brighten your skin, making it softer AND I think it even makes the hair less thick.  "Basin" is the type of flour used to make "pacorreh", the fried food we've probably all eaten during Ramadan.  I am not sure what it is called in English, maybe someone can help me out.

Oh, on a side note for all you young mothers out there.  I heard that if this "basin" concoction is used on young girls (babies), they won't ever grow hair on their faces/legs/arms etc!!!  Ever wonder why are grandmothers have NO hair anywhere on their bodies?? This was why!!  I was so mad at my mom for not doing this to me!!  Just imagine how much your daughters will love and thank you after this!

I also heard that dabbing plain milk on your skin with a cotton ball and leaving it there for a few minutes until it dries and then washing it off makes skin a lot softer as well.

My mother-in-law told me that an aunt of her would put glycerine on her face every morning, and it made her skin fresh and smooth---never had a wrinkle!  I'm not too sure what glycerine is, I think its a type of sugar, you can probably find it in the cake isle at the grocery store--its liquid form.

She also told me that cantaloupe/watermelon/honey dew and all these other melons are good for your skin because they contain this ingredient that I can't remember :)  But she said that the beta-carotines in carrots are not necessarily good for your skin.

Ok, well thats all I have for now.  Feel free to add to the topic of skin, move on to another topic or even add a new one!

Take Care

Wassalam,
Nazia

ps--I am too lazy to try any of the things I mentioned above, but if I ever do one day, Insha'Allah I will let you guys know what happens!

Yes, "basin" (:)for some reason I found that spelling very funny..probably better to spell it "besan"..for non-urdu speaking ppl, it's pronounced as bay-sun) is good for the skin. In english it's called gram flour I think. But a word of caution: its VERY drying..so if u already have dry skin, it'll only worsen in. Even for normal skin, its recommended to mix it with some moisturizing agent, like whole milk. Besun is the best for oily skin, it rrreeaally clears the oil and helps to keep blackheads in check if used regularly.
As for the mixture for babies...the besan is only a side ingredient, the main being coarse wheat flour. As far as I know, its the "technique" used to apply the paste rather than the paste itself that removes fine hairs. But the effectiveness of it, as Nazia said, can be seen on our mothers and grandmothers :) I've  heard that the massaging action also helps the baby sleep better.

I  personally can say that glycerine is an excellent moisturizer, espcially in the winter. If u have dry skin, then mix glycerine with equal amounts of lemon juice and apply. You can also add rose water to get a fragrance. This mixture is a bit sticky, I use it at bedtime. It helps a lot for dry heels and elbows. It's best to make it fresh, but if u want to store..then keep in the fridge and thap too shouldn't be beyond a week-10 days.

I know a load of these natural remedies..the only problem is my impatience and laziness .....:(

asalaamu alaikum,
another reason that our mothers and grandmothers don't have any hair is
that body hair falls off with age, for men too that is.  I mean i
highly doubt that they used ata (flour) on my dad and his legs seem pretty
hairless now.  I'm not sure if the flour mixture really works, or its
just genetic, i've heard mixed results from people who have tried it.  so
i guess there is no harm in trying it, and if it works it works, if
not, then we know.

Glycerine is interesting, it is sort of soft feeling:

"Call it glycerine or glycerol, this oily, sweet-tasting, edible
ingredient appears in many mouthwashes, toothpastes, and even sunscreens.
Glycerine attracts water, and gives products a glossy appearance.

"It slows down moisture loss to make hair and skin feel softer, and
keeps toothpaste from drying out. It used to be a common ingredient in
soap, and can be made from animal and vegetable fats (coconut or olive
oil, for instance).

"Glycerine was discovered by Carl Scheele in 1779 when he heated olive
oil mixed with red lead. Glycerine also shows up in baked goods and
antifreeze. Mixed with sulfuric and nitric acids, it becomes a powerful
explosive: nitroglycerine."

(Christian Science Monitor, on Britannica -
http://www.britannica.com/magazine/print?content_id=151273)

I don't believe this thing about putting flour on a baby making hair
not grow. The hair grows where it will. Or more particularly, where Allah
has designed it to be there -- hair does keep you warm when it's cold
outside, we just have the luxury of removing or styling it for
beautification. One of the reasons our grandmas aren't very hairy is that
people's hair gets thinner and lighter as they age. I never saw my grandma as
a young woman, I don't know about you folks. Besides, she is naturally
almost hairless! And she sure isn't Indian or Pakistani.  Downside: you
can't see her eyelashes or eyebrows either!

Some of this is just genetics and many Asians of all types (living in
Asia) are less hairy than those living in the US, regardless of race.
For example I have many Korean and Japanese friends who are either
hairless on their legs or they are hairy and their mothers and grandmothers
are smooth.

Life goes on!

Bismillah and salam,

The prophet saws has recommended olive oil for us. Even in the quran it is mentioned that it is benefitial (like light, noor) unless it touch fire and is heated up.

So really, you can put it in your hair for a few hours and rinse, or use it as baby oil, or use it to medicate (ex. for an ear infection), and to make the food yummy (like humus, beans, or tomatoes with lemons salt and this oil. etc). it is bound to Insha'Allah beautify and make you healthy.

I did a treatment for my hair a coupe of weeks ago, and alhemdulilah it is gaining the thickness back.

They used to say weird things a long time ago like ant paste and blood of a desert lizzard or bat and it supposed to stop hair growth since they are babies, but come on!!! Why hurt well totally kill other creatures for something so silly. It is just hair.

hey hey hey....don't knock it till you try it yo!  It is shady, I admit, and I'm not saying it works, but I am saying that my grandmother told me that her mother did it to her and she never grew hair...So its not just because she is old now. But hey, no one is making you do it.

Anyways, today I went out and bought some glycerine.  So tonite, I think I'm going to do an herbal remedy.  With my olive oil, glycerine, and "besan".  I have some ubtan too, but I don't know how to make it.  I'll tell you guys how it goes.  Maybe I'll light candles and stuff too..:) JK

Oh, I heard that putting honey on your eye lashes makes them longer!  Thats kind of odd--besides, it would make your eye lids stick together!  So I would not really recommend it.  And I also heard that beet juice---ie- boil beets and take their juice (?) is supposed to be really good for your hair.  I tried it once or twice, and it was more messy then anything else, so I gave up on it quickly.

Ok, I'll talk to you guys later...Take Care,

slm,

Alright ladies, my herbal treatment is complete!

My mom made the ubtan mixture, which I found out had besan in it to begin with.  She just added olive oil and water and rubbed it all into my face and arms.  She kind of massaged it in for a few minutes and then I washed it off like normal face wash.  I felt like I had had a facial!  My skin was Masha'Allah sooo soft!  Then after a few minutes, once the water had fully dried off, I knew it was time for moisturizer, so I opted for my newly bought bottle of glycerine!  So a lil glycerine, mixed with an equal amount of water and bada bing bada boom--- a totally natural moisturizer. And an almost totally natural exfoliating/moisutrizing regime!  Not that I have the patience to do this every day--or even every week, but its cool nonetheless!  Usually, a girl's bathroom looks like a drug store with various cleansers and body splashes, mine looks like a grocery store!  I have my little tupperware containers holding the various potions and mixtures I've concoted, along with some olive oil, glycerine, lemon juice and an ubtan jar. :)  This is fun.
Alright ladies, I will talk to you later--I feel like putting cucumbers on my eyes!! :):)

I definitely suggest you guys go to your local pharmacy and hook up with some glycerine.  It's like $2, and it is an amazing moisturizer!  I put it on this morning and it lasted through my aerobics class, wudu, and general face wash!  It makes your face feel kinda sticky--but a nice sticky, a clean, fresh sticky :)

I did the ubtan again.  I looked like the Swamp Girl, but its all good :)  I also colored my hair...but thats besides the point :)

Anyways, my bathroom looked like a tornado had hit, but I got it straightened up, and now I just feel so darn fresh. :)

Ok, well i'm out.

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

What is the ubtan recipe, Nazia? I'd like to try, but I don't want my skin to go yellow...

Currently, there's this traditional Indonesian body scrub that I'm using.. it's called Mandi Lulur... ingredients include flowers and herbs.. and after the shower.. your skin really feels so smooth... as if, these's a smooth film on it.... and it smells, heavenly, mashaALlah... actually, I bought the Jasmine Mandi Lulur.

Back to the question in the thread... usually, Malay/ Indonesian weddings.. brides would have this flower bath plus the Mandi Lulur, and all sorts of stuff.. I gotta find out.. I'm not so well versed in these traditional stuff.

Plus.. about redder lips... there's this tip about brushing your lips as well, when you brush your teeth... errr... never tried it myself, but one sister did.. and she's pretty happy with the results... removes dead skin cells, they say.

Take care!

another tip for glowing skin, try massaging your face with some aqueous cream (that's nappy rash cream to you and me) for 3/4 mins every night.  you do this my using the first two fingers on each hand and you go in small circles all around your face (including forehead). don't use an expensive moisturiser as you have to use quite a lot of cream.  make sure your not allergic to the cream first ! (believe me i know i have really sensitive skin).
have to say this works, and a haldi face treatment works amazingly although it really stings when you first put it on and it takes ages to wash it off.
hope this is of use.

Other than the advantage of nicely polished teeth for your big day- other troubles may be avoided, for example a "hurtin tooth."

On my wedding eve- my front tooth cap fell out! Imagine my horror as I looked at myself in the mirror and a woman with a stubby grinn peered back!

Yep- another tale in the life of Kathy.............
