"retarded"?!?!

A friend sent me this:

And they call some of these people "retarded"...  A few years ago, at
the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or
mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back......every one of them. One girl with Down's syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.

That made me cry.  That's so sweet.   :) Down syndrome kids are some of the nicest kids. I used to know one in high school.

Bismillah and salam,
May Allah forgive me if i sound harsh, but dear sisters i love you and we should always work to make the bonds of us all muslims...healthy, women, kids, challenged, whatever stronger. My friend's daughter has the down syndrome. And I can't help but feel something sounds weird about how you describe them. They are human some are nice some are cranky, they have their own personality. And I am sure you mean well to say they are the nicest, perhaps they are. But the part about the i used to know one really bothered me like it is a novelty astaghfirullah. Like people saying I knew one black guy in toronto, do you know him?, I am not racist I have a black friend, or things like that. May Allah forgive me if I read too much into what you wrote. Again I hope you will too forgive me if I sound harsh or it what i say is far from the truth.

You misunderstood me. I used to help her in school sometimes and sat down to eat lunch with her occasionaly. People are scared of kids like that but there's nothing to fear about them because like you said they are humans. They may behave and act differently but they are very nice people with mood swings just like everyone else.
