My nose was pierced in high school, several times actually. But I was forced to take my nose ring out each time I got a new one. It was against the school's rules. Inshallah, I will go and get it peirced again one of these days.

Why would it be wrong? Why do people try to make things harder on themselves? You never heard of the women back then with pierced noses because it wasn't in their culture to wear nose rings. People from the Ino-pak area wear nose rings.

The women back in the Prophet's times didn't wear three inch high heels either. Is it wrong to wear those? They didn't wear shalwar qameez either, is it wrong to dress in those? The Arabs wear different hena mehndi designs than the pakistani or indian people. Is that wrong? Is eating a burger and french fries haram? or chicken soaked in oil and masala? (oh man, i'm hungry. i'm going to go eat.)

I don't know. You need to ask someone who's grounded in Islamic fiqh. I don't see why it would be wrong.

Salam'alaykum,

Sheikh al-Munajjid said...

Question:

Is it permissible for a Muslim teenager who wears hijab to pierce her
nose or eyebrow?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

It is better not to do this, because it serves no purpose and causes
pain and mutilation to the nose, and more son in the case of the eyebrow,
by making holes in them. With regard to piercing the earlobes in order
to wear earrings, this was the custom of women at the time of the
Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so it is better to
limit ourselves to that.
Written by Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahmaan al-Barraak (www.islam-qa.com)
So, is this answer written by Shaikh Munajjid or Shaikh Barraak?

I would also ask myself this question before considering piercing any part of my body:

Why am I doing it?  If it is because I am impressed with the non-Muslims and want to be like them, then this is imitation of the kuffaar and is clearly forbidden.

By the way, aren't there African cultures where many piercings are performed on the body of women?  Some cultures also have a tradition of having several piercings on the ear, not just one.  And these are not new 'fads' but customs that have been practiced for ages there.

Why is piercing your nose mutilation? Why isn't piercing your ears mutilation? And not all people pierce their body parts to impress non believers.

And yes in african cultures women do pierce different body parts.

Why not let's just all dress up like Arabs in every way? That way we can leave our ancestors haram culture and adopt the halal culture of arabs.
Why isn't piercing your ears mutilation?
Because this is in accordance with the norm of all major cultures.

I think its really interesting where we get our definitions of the norm from.  For example, why do we not think its a big deal when a non-hijabi sister wears short-sleeves, but think its a defamation of Islam when she wears sleeveless clothes showing an extra 2 inches of her arm? Why is it ok to pierce your ears but nothing else? How did we make these distinctions?  How do we make any of these distinctions that aren't explicitly stated in the Quran?  Unfortunately more often than not, we accept the norms and status of quo of whatever the popular culture of the time is...

Needless to say---that whole concept is pretty lame.

Someone may argue that things that are accepted by the norm do not stand out and attract attention to oneself making them perhaps more permissible (ie--earrings), but I'd have to disagree saying that pretty much anything can attract to detract attention depending upon the person ornamented in this jewelry.  For example a huge loop going through your nostrils may attract some unwanted attention and may even give people the wrong impression about Islam, whereas a small stud above your right nostril is barely noticeable to anyone who doesn't directly have their attention in your direction in the first place.  I don't know, seems like one of those "non-issue" issues to me.  Use your common sense and do the right thing :)  Its that easy..

Sorry for being sarcastic. Let me tell you why I said that. I had always wanted arab clothes. They looked so beautiful and elegant and so comfortable. So i finally got me an outfit and i wore it to the masjid. Well, these girls and aunties come up and congradulated me on following the Prophet's way. That made me so angry. Because when i didnt wear the abayah those people sometimes ignored my salam and when did say salam they didnt return it with a smile. And they even asked me to sit next to them when i wore the abayah!!

So i wore shalwar qameez the next day and they all tell me that it's haram to stop wearing the abayah after wearing you wear it once. Ok. That was the first time I encountered such a thing.

i love arab clothes and i asked my dad to bring me some more from dubai. but by wearing that it won't make me any more religious than the person who wears jeans or shalwar qameez.

In another thread in this folder about wedding clothes, someone gave a link to a malay site and i really liked a few of those outfits. I want one of those too now inshallah. So just because the women in the Prophet's time didn't wear clothes like those, does that make it haram?

nice post nazia.

Sr. Saleema, i've never encountered nething like dat b4. I usually wear salwar kameezes n the sisters at the mosque r really nice to me:) but i simpathise with u.

ne ways, once i went shopping, n this muslimah was standin in the que like the rest of us. She seemed happy n was smilin, sudenly a kafirs baby hugged her legs n started giglin:) then i was very angry to c the muslimah instead of smilin, she made a horrible moody face at the baby n a hacky at the babies mother.  That was very distubin 4 me,
Would it hav harmed to giv a smile?
Insh'allah no 1 takes this post offencively;)

Assalamu 'alaikum!

Wouldn't piercings be like "adornments"...???
I mean, we're allowed to wear jewelry and fancy make-up and get all "doll-ed" up for our husbands and family...why would piercings be any different if they are intended to enhance the body?
(conversely, as Arsalan suggested, "why would someone get them if they are ONLY doing it to copy non-Muslims"?)

I had my belly pierced in grade 9 (oh my...almost 10 years ago!!!), and I have multiple piercings in my ears...of course, I got them all when I was non-Muslim...

But now that I'm in hijab, I have my piercings all to myself ;-D

So I hope someone finds a proper Islamic ruling on this soon...cause if I have to take them all out, out of not knowing the Islamic view...I'll have a lot of yucky holes to explain to my future husband :o

Bismillah and salam,
sister saleema,
Please make excuses for your sisters in Islam. We are supposed to make 40 of them in fact according to the hadeeth. I have been on the other side of that situation. But without not saying salam before hand. But when she wore jilbab I really felt over joyed that someone is started to become closer to Allah and the prophet's commands with regards to hijab. Yes I know you can wear wide pants, But I see that those clothes are wider and the aya seems to suggest that it is something that falls all the way down and out. But the girl was upset that i never said great clothes before. But really I was just happy to see that she is dressing more modestly in my opinion.
I read that one of the prophet's wives had some kind of cream on her face and the beloved told her it gives a glow to her face, she should only use it at night. Now what i understand from this hadeeth is that we shouldn't try to beautify or attract attention to us if we are out. so i guess if you put a nose ring, perhaps consider taking it out before you go out or when expecting non-mehrams.

I also am very curious what peoples opinions are on this. I love all of that body piercing, but I can't participate because when I got my ears pierced I hit the roof when I jumped. Ow! I said, never again! But I like the tattoos even more, and I wanted to get pink flowers for each girl and blue flax flowers for each boy...tattooed on my lower arms and legs...then I read, here at Madina, that tattoo's are unacceptable.  Although they would be normally covered as well, by hajib, yes? I saw a woman once, a photo of a Tibetan woman, who had a piercing for each child, but...owie ow owie! :O But on the tattoo's...well, they would normally only be seen by your family, correct?--Sonny :)

Assalam'alaykum,

Listen, we must not try to find reasons why tattoos are forbidden; the
very fact that the Prophet (sallalahu 'alayhi wa sallam) forbade them
is enough.  Don't you think?

----------------------------------------

Question:

Is tattooing permissible in Islam?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Tattooing means to prick the skin with a needle and inject kohl or some
other substance to change the skin colour to blue or green. This is
haraam according to the consensus of the scholars. (al-Mughni 1/94)

Al-Bukhaari and Muslim narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may
Allaah be pleased with him) said:

“Allaah has cursed the women who do tattoos and the women who have this
done, the women who pluck their eyebrows, and the women who fila their
teeth for the purpose of beautification and change the creation of
Allaah.”
