WHAT IS THE ARK?

The ARK is where we will be storing some old threads. It is the Archive of Really good discussions you Know ! :)

This isn't a discussion forum so all of these threads will be locked soon. We will try to put alot of the question discussion/problems q&a here. Articles will be archived in Al-Taqwa.

BTW the ARK is not a FIQH Q&A archive. It just an archive of discussions that average Muslims had ;)

Good idea! So when does a thread becomes an ARK? Frequently asked threads should also be put in here. Also we should be careful that the ARK doesn't become too large that it loses its appeal as a quick reference for good threads.

wlm,

hmm there is just WAYY too much stuff on the board. no one can find anything and so many things keep getting asked or discussed over and over again. i'm trying to think of a way to archive it all somehow systematically. any ideas let me know???

I think what we could do is:

1. leave everything where it is, just modify the titles to be more descriptive so ppl can actually find stuff, but with the amount of posts and growing there will soon just be wayy too much stuff on the server

2. we could save everything out to static html or text files and have a search that looks for stuff in it.

3. start migrating everything to the ARK trying to weed out the unnecessary stuff as we go

4. move stuff to the ark but keep where it came from ie [madrasa] [akhwat]

5. leave this board and just install the new version of the board and start new

6. just leave everything and see how long it takes until the madina explodes
??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

considering how many threads we have (literally 20 pages in the madrasa!) it's probably a good idea to archive.. (i guess..)

*but* what I was telling jannah earlier was that what usually helps me find threads is remembering where we had the discussion.. ie akhwat, ikhwan, madrasa etc.. and then from there surfing through that specific folder.. so I didn't like this idea at all..

but if we have to embARK then i'd go with #4..

Assalaamu alaikum,

Is the issue the space on the server or the ability to find something quickly? Because each will require a different approach. If we are archiving for quick reference then we should have descriptive titles that reflects the contents of the thread.

The board has performed without loss in performance so far. So maybe it can grow much larger without any problems. The new mySQL version of yabb will only improve performance and I don't think it will reduce space requirements much. BTW, isn't the new version backward compatible, that is, can we not use the old messages in the new version? I believe this version can provide better searching.

If space limitation and quick reference are the issues and moving to th enew version of yabb is not feasible then a combination of 3 and 4 can be done.

Wasalaam.

slm,

yeah i agree... it may be a bit of trouble, but i think the board could use an upgrade.. the classic cgi and flat file database thing is old and its somewhat slow.. and when you have a board the size of medina, its bound to have problems as the number of posts increases... i say find a good version of the board that can import all the old stuff and keep it for a long time.. in that case we may have to go through some downtime while its bein set up, but inshallah i think it wouold be worth it :)

slm,

and if you get the new version of yabb, then check this: http://boardmod.xnull.com/

looks pretty spiffy ;-D

wlm,

the problem with the new yabb version is that i made so many modifications with this one, i'm not sure the same could be done with the new one because it is written completely differently ie the salams, anonymous posting, profile, getting rid of bugs etc. it doesnt have any great features we desperately need and space wise it makes no difference, we'll still have to archive at some point. i mean do we need a fancy new car when this one still works? ;)

at some point we can move the ark stuff to somewhere else.

haha.. well good point.. i know its just an idea... the archives woudl probably work better for now... options 2-4 sound good to me :) i still like the idea of a new board, but its a ton of work and the one we have works fairly well so inshallah its up to you :)

I think the board needs a much better user interface like the new YABB mentioned, and it needs a search that actually works.  Just the other day someone asked me about some thread I put up entitled what religion are you, and you fill out a questionairre and it tells u what you are, but i have no idea how to find it now.

And sticking all the old messages in one big forum is like finding a needle in a haystick (pardon my barn humor).  Perhaps if the archive had folders within it like, akhwat archive, ikhwan archive, etc.

Some news items aren't worth archiving because they become outdated.
