Cool things I've learned!

slm,

I'm taking this Linux networking class, and for the most part--its quite boring :)  But the other day I was studying for our exam and I came across this section in the book explaining the SMTP (Simple mail tranfer protocol) stuff.  Anyways, I learned how to send totally anonymous messages to anyone!  I can just make up an email address and bada bing bada boom...my job is done!(I have to use a real domain name, but thats not a big deal considering almost everyone has a domain)  I wanted to post the method...but figured the admins may not want that kind of information available to the 30,000+ lurkers and posters who visit this board daily..  But, this is one of the (only) coolest things I've learned during my years as a computer science student, and I've been dying to tell everyone about it!  Anyways, if you guys are really curious, I'll fill you in on a need to know basis (ie-IM me, but don't ever use it on me! :) )
But!  I want to learn more cool things, soo if you any of you oh-so-computer loving peeps have come across cool little things to do on your comp...do share!

Take Care,
Wassalam,
Nazia

Don't be smug about it :) As they say, if you can hide something then someone can also uncover it (or something like that). Internet communications can always be tracked using IP addresses. So someone can trace you to your computer at the time of the mail even if s/he doesn't know your email address. Of course, that person must be on something no good. :)

Cool things... anyone use Opera? I installed it today and it looks good. Its rendering is extremely fast displaying pages almost instantly. It has other features also that I haven't looked into yet.

Wasalaam.

Yeah, this is true, but we shouldn't try to dupe people who have extensive computer knowledge anyways.  I mean, your best bet is to send these emails to people who think IP stand for "irresistible pineapple" ---cos that's when it gets funny.

What's opera?

So Nazia what made you decide to take this Linux networking class? ???

Simple...I needed a 300 level CS elective to graduate...The class number was 392..and its the only 300 level elective being offered this summer :)

But I don't think this Linux stuff is for me.  I mean I can totally appreciate it for everyone else, and I kind of dig the command line power, but for TWO WEEKS my group and I have been trying to install a freakin Linux server system and for the life of us it won't run Xwindows!! :(:(:(:(  We must have installed and re-installed atleast 8 times!  And lemme tell you, I've got some computer geeks in my group...and if they can't do it...ain't no way the answer is coming to me. *shrug*

I do like Unix though.  I'm addicted to pine and fine myself typing ctrl+x after I finish typing my posts :)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Opera is a browser. I know the browser wars have been won by IE but opera is good also. It is fast and has many features for controlling the display of pages. It was featured on http://www.download.com/ and as I was not feeling like doing anything significant at work today just went ahead and tried out some new stuff (i have a 40GB disk to fill!).

Yeah, installing Linux for the first time is like a few days full time job. One should get lots of docs printed out before embarking on such a journey. And setting up XWindows is the hardest. There are always issues with the font server and display and stuff. Stick to an easy to install distribution like RedHat Linux. For linux geeks compiling the kernel is kind of a big deal. Anyone done that?

Wasalaam.

A.W.W.

At last I've found my family of geeks and nerds. ;)
I've come across Linux before and it seems ok however, I'd stick to Win 2000 so easy man. Have you tried Turbo Linux 6.0 it comes with all the tools that you'll ever want to use, from Office Apps to Development Tools I got mine free with some hardware the company bought.

As for SMTP that is so easy to trace back to you, however, you could alwys use a public domain PC i.e one at the library.

By the way my fellow nerds and geekesses has anyone subsribed to any of those Muslim IT mailing lists(Majordama) ? I have recently put my self on the list, however, I haven't received anything from the mailing list, to date.
Anyone know any other mailing lists or forums where we could contribute our technical and management skills for the good of the Muslim Ummah. Anyone know of any drop me a line.

Salaams for now

Hanif
