INTRODUCTION The Junior Deen Intensive Program (JDIP) 1422/2001 will beheld from August 13 to August17, 2001 at the Kinark Outdoor Centre in Minden, Ontario [21/2 hours from Toronto]. This location is part of the beautiful Haliburton region and is fully equipped with a dining hall and kitchen able to serve over 100 campers. Camp staff according to a nutritional and balanced halal menu will prepare meals. Campers will be accommodated in modern cabins with electricity and heating. The cabins contain bunk beds and have space for 12 campers. Washroom facilities include hot and cold running water, flush toilets and showers. Mature and experienced brothers and sisters will act as counselors and sleep in the same cabins with the younger campers and will supervise personal and group activities. Depending on enrolment, we expect to have adults in each of the nine cabins. As required by Islamic teachings and etiquette (Adab) brothers and sisters will be accommodated in separate cabins and strict separation will be enforced during transportation to and from the camp-site, sleeping, eating, recreation and study sessions. There will be an assigned Camp leader and supervisor who will be assisted by a team of experienced counselors, educators and teachers. A scholar in Fiqh and other Islamic sciences, Shaykh Jamal Al-Dhahabi will be the main teacher. Qualified lifeguards and a camp nurse will also be on site for the duration of the camp. PROGRAM First held in 1997 at this facility, the Junior Deen Intensive Program is a unique educational experience for young Muslims combining relevant traditional learning with an innovative outdoor program emphasizing practical Islamic living and community. Its aim is to instill an awareness of the basics of Islamic belief, practice and adab. At the end of the program we pray that each participant will have a sense of what it means to be a practicing Muslim. The program is open to both boys and girls ages 12 to 17. During the day, campers will enjoy a variety of outdoor activities supervised by Kinark staff and our counselors. These include, canoeing, hiking, basketball, volleyball, soccer, archery, wall climbing, swimming, kayaking, astronomy and many other exciting outdoor and recreational activities. The week will culminate with Jumu^Òah salah followed by prizes and gifts fro those who excelled in various activities during the week. Daily sessions of learning will cover basic Islamic practices, beliefs and learning important daily dua^Òs. There will be special sessions for older and younger campers focusing on living Islam practically as well as ample time for reflection and the building of brotherhood and sisterhood between participants. A nightly bonfire program will feature relevant stories from the Islamic tradition and night walks will introduce astronomy to campers. TRANSPORTATION We will be traveling on two full size school buses, one for the brothers and one for the sisters. We plan to leave in the early morning of August 13 from two pick-up points, TARIC Mosque and Islamic Foundation. Participants will be advised of the details on advance of the departure. VISITORS Due to the limited facilities and the disruption to the program, we will not be able to accommodate overnight visitors at the camp. Parents wishing to visit the site should inform us prior to August 09, 2001 so that we may advise what arrangements could be made.
