Working on the story of Prophet Yusef as.

In the Quranic ayat 12:43, In Arabic is it corn or wheat? The translations from Ibn Kathir and Yusef Ali say corn- but someone told me it wasn't.

Clarification?

Well- only so I can teach my son correctly. Growing up- as a Catholic we knew it to be corn. Then a Muslim said he didn't think it was corn.

As a revert- sometimes we can mix up the stories- knowing from both religions. So I would like to be careful when teaching my son and give him accurate info from Islam.

Quran 12:43
And the king (of Egypt) said "Verily I saw  (in a dream) seven fat cows, whom seven lean ones were devouring, and seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry.  O notables! Explain to me my dream, if it be that you can interpret dreams."

Part of Ibn Kathir's tafsir related to this ayah says:
...Rather, he said "For seven consecutive years, you shall sow as usual"
you will receive the usual of rain and fertility for 7 consecutive years.  He interpreted the cows to be years, because cows till the land that produce fruits and vegetables which represent the green ears of corn in the dream.

p.s.
Kathy you had to pick an ayah with cows in it, didn't you. :)

Tee hee-
oh, didn't even notice- (wink wink)

On the serious side. Yes I do know both translations are saying corn.

But I was told the arabic does not really mean corn. So I am asking for some one to verify this for me.

It seems to me that the Arabic word that is used (sumbulah, pl. sumbulaat) literally means "ears."

Whether it is ears of corn or ears of wheat, it's the interpretation of the commentator.  Linguistically, it could probably mean either.

Wallahu a'lam.
