Assalam'alaykum,

There is a well known rule in islam according to which women must not
beautify their voice in front of non-mahram men (which you necessarily
do when you recite Qur'an).  This is the reason why you don't find tapes
of Qu'ran recited by women.  Tell your parents to fear Allah and
explain to them that if you refuse, it is out of modesty, not because you
don't want to obey them.  There's no obedience to the parents when they
ask you to do something that goes against the teachings of islam.

wassalam

slm,

true one should beautify their voice when reading quran, but you can also read normally to learn the tajweed rules and all from a teacher. it's not like you are making your voice enticing when trying to learn how to read the quran properly.

as salaamu alaykum,

If you're working on some of the basics right now, like pronouncing the actual letters themselves or sounding out the words, I don't really see how your voice can be all that smooth or melodious.. It's the same in English, when you're just beginning to learn how to read/pronounce the language, I doubt there's any kind of rhythm or sweetness to it.. you're just working on the mechanics.

I don't know, that's just something to think about.  The woman's voice itself is not awrah, it's only in that beautifying element of the voice that comes with reading Qur'an that this kind of situation becomes problematic.

I know that I personally have recited Qur'an in front of male teachers my whole life.. I guess that's not saying much for my voice, but I don't think it's a problem if you just say what you gotta say and keep the beautifying until he's out of earshot :)

wAllahu a'lam

wasalaamu alaykum.

dang jannah why you gotta post at the same time I do? :P

Assalaam alaikum,

I am a Qu'ran teacher and have an ijazah in recitation of the Qur'an.

A comment about females reciting to male teachers:  Females have recited to male Qur'an teachers for centuries as it used
to be almost impossible to find a female teacher.  If one can find a
qualified female teacher, that is best, if not, it is not wrong.  In
conservative Saudi Arabia it is done all the time, but a muhram of the
female student is present or it is done through closed circuit t.v.

abt reading!!!
if u can read slowly, then there is no need to read to a teacher of opp sex, u can improve by practicing!!! There are also tapes and stuff that u can learn fr!!!

This is my opinion, so DON'T start a arguement!!!

hmm no argument here..:) but you can read as slow as you like, practice all you like and memorize the way a qari recites quran but it still doesn't teach you the tajweed rules to use when you regularly read quran

Aslamu alaikum

The tajweed rules you can actually learn yourself from a book, but when it comes to practicing the rules while reading the quran then you'll actually need a teacher to listen to you as you recite, as you'll need him/her to correct you if you make any mistakes. Thats the way you learn how to read the Quran properly as far as I am aware.

My parents insisted that i had 2 read 2 an uncle, but i started walkin out of lesson early without him realising and eventually stopped.  My parents didnt even realise.  But my sisters kinda got stuck with the teacher 4 a while.
