Have you had menses before?
If you are a young girl, sometimes periods can be irregular
If you are really worried get your mom to take you to a good family doctor

don't worry:)

Many times periods can be irregular when you first get them. You might have your first period and not get the next one for a couple months. This is usually normal. It takes a couple years before they get onto a regular schedule.  Some girls do notice that they'll have an increased amount of discharge right before their period.

Some girls are irregular their whole life. They might have their period one month and not get it again for another couple months. One of my friends is like that, she's a runner and she's always had irregular periods.  I've noticed that sometimes very athletic women have troubles with their periods. Also, if you're under a lot of stress or haven't been eating regularly as in Anorexia, your periods can become irregular. But it's important you visit your doctor so that they can make sure everything's working alright.

Inshallah I hope things work out for you :)

slm anon,

from among the sisters here, when we've missed our periods it's turned out to be because of not eating properly or stress. it is important to have a good diet and eat well. if you're not having your period it means that something is wrong and your body does not have what is necessary for it. sometimes the body does not get enough nutrients it needs and goes into 'starvation' mode and missing periods then is quite common. so please look into that inshallah and yes definitely visiting your doctor is an excellent idea. she can suggest some things that will help you.

more modest about posting personal problems one the message board because
there might be more eyes on here than women. and those things you
should discuss with your doctor.

I totally agree with Jannah. This page is used to deal with
sisters issues so its perfectable acceptable to ask such questions!!!
And I am quite sure that the problem exists with a greater number of
people than the one person who posted it so it benifits all!!

The issue raised is something perfectly natural that occurs in every
womens life so of course its not something to be ashamed about.

If the anonymoys person who I assume is a 'brother' has a problem with
female issues such as eyebrow plucking, hair styles etc then may I
suggest he dosent click onto the sisters discussion page the issues may not
interest him but it interests and certainly helps others!

Hey, no fighting on my part of the forum! :) Just kidding.
well, not really. But anyway, anonymous and everyone else out there, feel free to ask any questions you want. :) Ok? There's nothing shameful about periods. Even Allah talks about them in the Qur'an that men shouldn't approach their wives during this time.

And we have several ahadith that deal with this issue. The Prophet (S) advised his wife Aisha (R) about menstruation--what to do etc, during Hajj if one gets them during the rituals.

Anonymous, usually girls miss their periods for a month if they are stressed, but if you have missed them for 3 months now you should go see a doctor. I know that it can be embarrassing, but this is you health girl, you gotta take care of yourself!  :)

It may be that it has nothing to do with stress; it might be something more serious, but hopefully not.

Take care!

I agree also. From a Mom's perspective I wouldn't mind if my son learned about menses before he was married.

Maybe then he would be a little more compassionate to his wife. Also he would learn that missed periods are a fact of life and wouldn't freak out if his wife missed one.

There was a post the other day by a brother mentioning that women have it easier because they were not required to pray 7-10 days a month. I thought it was interesting that he thought they lasted that long! 4-6 days are the norm. ( I won't comment on his statement, otherwise)

I will never forget the first time my hubby had to go to the store and get some pads for me. ...He came home with Depends... I know I am older than him- but not that old!

Bismillah and salam,
For the pains sister, try to take herbal teas like chamomile. And eat things that are cooling medicine. I don't mean ice-cream that is from milk and so it is hot. I mean like water melon. And also sit in a dark room and put your feet up helps you deal with pain better. Ask someone to massage your back.
Ask Allah to make it a reason to forgive you past sins. Always say la ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu mina althalimeen when in pain.

wlm,

quite a few of the sisters i went on umrah with did this. apparently there is an opinion allowing this. but you are correct it is not natural and of course any kind of pills may have side effects.

you might be able to track your period if ur regular that may help?? or if u exercise and don't eat..not very healthy like though eh :)  i know that like ramadan sometimes sisters naturally don't get their period because their diet has changed alot..

If you know someone who's period lasts this long- it is not normal- they should be checked out by a doctor.

Yes I agree- I would rather pray than have my menses too!

The person who wrote that insinuated that we had it easy because we did not pray during this time. Many of us would much rather pray and are saddened at this time of the month because we can not pray. I also wondered what he meant- did he really think we were lucky not to have to pray?

Assalam u Alikum,
My peroids are sooo irregular since the day i got them and nothing helped to regulate them. SO,i just left them at their own. And now I came to know my cycle is 5 weeks instead of 4 so I am at peace :). PLus my mom says, warm milk helps for the pain(although it sure dont help me; i also get really BADD pains :( ).The best thing I guess is a pain killer cause I cannot even stand on my feet w/o one.
And I thought 5-7 days are perfectly normal?????some ppl even have 'em for like 10 days which i think is rare since I have never seen anyone like that. WaAllah u ALam. But anon sis, hopefully u went to the doctor and he told u its nothing major, Ameen.
Girls who have SEVERE pain ,should try seeeing a doctor too. One of my friends had it really bad and no one could figure out the problem until this gynacologist told her she had endiometresis( dunno if spelled it right!!). Or it might be cysts on the ovaries or stuff like that. So,taht friend had 2 surgeries ,the last one a week ago and she says she feels better. WaAllah u Alam :)

Re: Womens prob!!!

There is no set limit for menstruation which applies to all
women. As you may realize, this is something that relates to the
physical constitution of every woman. Hence, there is a wide range of
variation between women, although the overwhelming majority continues in
menstruation for seven days. Many women finish their periods after six days,
while others may go on to the eighth day before they are finally clean.
A few may have longer or shorter periods. Although most women have a
regular period, which comes every 28-30 days, some are not so regular.
Therefore, there is no maximum limit for the length of time of
cleanliness from menstruation. On the other hand, some scholars say that the
longest that a menstruation period can take is 10 days. The weightier
opinion is that there is no such limit. Every woman knows her normal course
and she acts accordingly. Sometimes, a woman continues to discharge
blood after the end of her menstrual period. The discharge may continue
week after week. She has to differentiate between menstruation and a
normal blood discharge. The two are different. During her menstruation, a
woman may not pray, fast or have sexual intercourse with her husband.
The case is different when she has a blood discharge. What a woman should
do if she has such a discharge is to calculate her menstruation period
on the basis of its normal length, and she takes a bath and pays no
attention to the discharge apart from taking the normal precautions not to
allow the blood to fall on her clothes or body. Umm Salamah, the wife
of the Prophet, asked him about a woman who continues to bleed. He said
: "Let her calculate the nights and the days which she used to
menstruate every month. She should not pray during these days. Thereafter, she
takes a bath, uses a piece of cotton or cloth ( to absorb bleeding )
and prays." (Related by Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others). The case is known
in the books of fiqh as " estihadhah ", which is different from
menstruation which means "haith."

I have always had 7 to 8 day periods, same with my mother, there is nothing wrong if that is the way that they have always came:)

Please don't think of your Menses as a bad thing, it is what enables our bodies to carry children, Allah ta'ala is very kind to us to accommodate us getting our periods.

Though I can not say I "enjoy" having my period I am grateful that I am able to have children and that I am healthy

I think there are prolly many reasons, aside from the obvious biological reasons, why women have periods. But i was thinking, and maybe one of the reasons, in all of Allah's glorious wisdom, is to give guys, and our husbands (future or current) an opportunity to be empathic and caring and gentle. Seeing a woman have to go through so much pain, would i hope, help guys to be a little bit more sensitive to a woman's needs. Especially because as shown earlier by the brother's comment on how we have it easy since we don't have to pray during our periods, guys can be a little clueless in that regard ;)

but anyway, Advil works good too. If you are someone who has *a lot* of pain to where you get a fever and throw up, is that normal? My friend goes through this every time. I think she should go see a doctor. Don't you think?

Exercise during your period is actually a GOOD thing! When you exercise, your body releases endorphins which are natural opiate-like drugs that your body makes, so it makes you feel good :) I know it sounds like it would do more harm than good, but I've tried it and if you are just having like general cramps, it made me feel better to get those muscles moving ;)

Sorry I should have clarified about the exercise, I meant that it's helpful if you've just got some general cramps, not the very painful ones as some of the sisters have been describing. I know that my roomie has very painful periods and has gotten prescription medication which was really very strong Motrin, and it still didn't really help her. But mashallah she's a strong person and often literally doubles over in pain but doesn't tell anyone what's wrong.

Something in general that makes me and a lot of other girls feel better, is when we "give each other endorphins".  All you have to do is have someone run their fingers through your hair, or lightly and slowly massage the scalp and it feels wonderful!!  Especially over the ears, hehe, although I always feel like a dog getting their ears scratched, but hey that must be why they like it :)

One time, when I was younger, I went out shopping with my dad.  He and I were both excited because we were going to pick out a printer for our new computer. First we stop at the Indian store because he needs to pick something up and I tell him I'll wait in the car.  And boy was he in for a surprise when he came back.  My whole face had turned red and I doubling over in pain, holding on to my stomach, with tears coming out of my eyes.  He got soo scared!  He was like, "Nazia! whats wrong?? Do you still want to go buy the printer?" hahaha, how can you say  "HELLLL NO" to your dad nicely? I just meekly shrugged my shoulders and he got the hint.  We got home and he just looked at my mom and was like-- "What is wrong with her??"  My mom told him not worry, then she gave me some medicine, tucked me into bed and sat with me until I fell asleep.  I woke up about an hour later totally normal.  My dad thought I was weird. :)

Some ppl (like me) prefer herbal remedies. The pill might be more convenient but then there are so many possible side affects.

<<k i have a question ... what do u guys think of taking birth conrol pills (not me) to suspend ur periods so that u dont miss a day when u go to hajj or in ramadhan so u dont have to make up fasts later.  i have heard about this alot and know people who have done it but i wonder if it is right.  it is a blessing given by god and also it may not always be safe right? ne ways .......
was salam>>

That's why I asked about the miswak water. Has anyone heard of the women in the Prophet's day drinking miswak water to delay their periods?

As for the orginal question I had a friend who didn't have her period for 6 months..she spent a year in another country so her body had a hard time adjusting, to food, environment etc. Then of course there was the added stress. Her family (wrongly) suspected that she was pregnant bc she hadn't had it for so long ..so that didn't help. The stress from that could have also been a factor for her not getting her period for so long.

As for me, I miss a cycle during Ramadan...so then I wouldn't miss a day of fasting in that month..it's happened to me for two Ramdans now..(Alhamdullah) ^_^

As Salaam Alaikum
First I would like to say that I love this website! Anyway, I have a question that I have been too embarrased to ask anyone in person. I hope the brothers who read this are not offended or grossed out but I need an answer. Brothers, you can stop reading here if you want. O.K. I want to know if it is ok to make salat if you have a discharge (other than you period or post-birth bleeding) such as a yeast infection. I am afraid to pray because I read a hadith that a man was punished for praying when he was not pure. I know that not praying is wrong too, but I don't know what to do. I'm on medication and if anyone has had this problem you know that there is a definite discharge of the medicine(cream) and yeast throughout the day. If anyone has the answer (hadith or some proof would be great. A book or article reccomendation)please let me know. Thanx and sorry if this is uncomfortable for some of you folks. As Salaam Alaikum

Bismillaah, wal-hamdulillaah, was-salaatu was-salaam alaa-r-rasoolillaah.

Amma ba'd:

As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh!

Shaykh Ibnu-l-Uthaymeen was asked the following question:

Is the discharge that comes form the woman's vagina pure or impure?

His reply (hafithahullaah) is as follows:

What is well known according to the scholars is that anything that comes out of the private parts is impure, except for one thing, that is semen which is pure. Otherwise, anything of mass and weight that comes from the private parts is impure and nullifies the ablution (wudoo). Based on this principle, every liquid that flows from a woman's vagina is impure and requires wudoo. This is my conclusion after consulting with some scholars and doing some research. However, I have some problem with this conclusion because some women have such fluids all the time. If the flow is persistent, then the solution is to treat it in the same way that one treats the problem of uncontrollable urine flow. The person should make ablution for the prayer after the time of the prayer begins and then she should pray. Then I researched this question with some doctors. They made it clear that if the fluid is from the urethra, then the ruling is as I have just stated. However, if the fluid is from the uterus, then it is also as stated, but in this case the liquid is considered pure and one does not have to wash it off of whatever it touches.

Here ends the ruling of Shaykh Ibnu-l-Uthaymeen.

Please note that the area on the undergarment should be washed and cleaned if the liquid is not deemed to have come from the uterus for every prayer. But as stated if the fluid is understood to have been discharged from the uterus then wudoo is required but the washing is not, Allaah knows best.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (raheemahullaah t'alaa) has a similar fatwaa, but he suggests washing the area regardless of where the fluid is deemed to have originated, and Allaah knows best.

May Allaah bless you for asking about your religion, for if we were shy we would remain ignorant, and to remain ignorant is destruction.

Wal-hamdulillaahi rabbil aalameen.

As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu!
