| Assalamoalaikum brothers and sisters I am a new learner to the holy Quran not that I am a revert or anything jsut that I have been an ethnic Muslims (as brother Yahiya Emerick puts us, quite rightly I would say) for a long time and am now trying to understand the real meaning of the Book. I hope it is not too late for me. I was having a little problem with understanding the following verses, If somebody can help, I will really appreciate it. Jazakumllah khair.... 3-88. Except for those that repent (even) after that and make amends; for verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 3-89. But those who reject Faith after they accepted it , and then go on adding to their defiance of Faith - never will their repentance be accepted: for they are those who have gone astray. 3-90. As to those who reject Faith, and die rejecting,- never would be accepted from any such as much gold as the earth contains, though they should offer it for ransom. For such is (in store) a chastisement grievous and they will find no helpers. Actually my understanding of repentance is that whether you are a Muslim or of any other religion, if you are not on the right path but if you really repent of your sins BEFORE the death and submit to Allah SWT, then this repentence may be accepted, by Allah SWT, al Rahaman, Al Raheem.... but in verse 3-89, it is said clearly that the repentence of such people will not be accepted at all. Could any one please explain this to me please as to who these people are and can I have some example of this kind of people. Wassalam |

| [slm] I think you numbered the verses wrong. They should be numbered 3:89 - 3:91. Your question then, specifically, is about ayah 3:90. According to Ibn Kathir, ayaat 3:90 and 3:91 need to be read together. When ayah 3:90 talks about the repentance not being accepted, it is talking about the repentance which the mushrikeen of Arabia would make when death suddenly approached them. That is, they would accept Islam, then reject it, and live their life of rejection until death would overtake them. Right before they breathed their last, they would repent and say the shahaadah. These ayaat were revealed to make it clear that such a repentance would never be accepted by Allah, and that if a person died on disbelief (3:91), then of course, he was doomed. And none of his good deeds in this world would avail him on the Day of Judgment. May Allah protect us from being among those who go astray. And may He give us the ability to understand the Qur'an correctly and live our lives according to its teachings. Wassalamu alaikum. |
