I've done a bit if digging around and apparently the season of programmes are provisionally scheduled for screening in late August or early September.

The programmes are supposed to show the Islamic way of life in 21st Century Britain and are predominately targeted towards non muslims.

It should be interesting to see what transpires.

Here are the details, according to a BBC publicity booklet.

"This August BBC TWO is screening ISLAM UK, a season of programmes reflecting contemporary life for Muslims in the UK today and providing non-Muslims with a broader understanding of Islam - its history, its culture and how it is practised in twenty-first century Britain.

Highlights of the season include a documentary challenging stereotypes, a film about the Hajj - the annual pilgrimage to Mecca - and a fly-on-the-wall view of the Birmingham Central Mosque.  There will also be features linked into the season by regular programmes such as BBC TWO's Home Front.

For TV and Radio programme listings and more information on Islam UK visit www.bbc.co.uk (from August).

Highlights (??) for me include:

Prince Naseem's Guide to Islam
Home Front

And there seems to be a whole host of locally organised talks and stuff.

Let's see what goes on then, eh?

Definately sounds interesting but are you kidding me with Prince Naseem's Guide to Islam???

Oh well let's not make any judgements before we see it I guess.

I'll definately be tuning in to the documentary on Hajj ;-)

InshaAllah we'll get a fair portrayal and the season will turn into some effective Dawah.

Nay, akhi, I kid you not.  Here's the BBC blurb on it:

"Presented by Prince Naseem Hamed this programme is aimed primarily at non-Muslims.  The programme explains the nuts and bolts of the faith and dispels a few of the myths about Islam and Muslims.

I actually like Prince Naseem. I would say that some of his appearances on TV a few years ago were questionable, but alhumdulillah, he doesn't come with the baggage that Mike Tyson does, and I expect his knowledge of Islam to be considerably better than that of Br. Chris Eubank. I remember also that he made Hajj this past year, may Allah accept it of him and all the pigrims, ameen.

I'm looking forward to it. *smile*

the season should hopefully by Allah's will dispell some myths about British muslims who up until now have only been percieved as either terrorists with bombs stuck to their bodies under their thobes and abayas or either paki's! [no offence to any pakistani's out there]

inshallah if any one wants any further information or wants to participate on teh programmes either radio or tv, please feel free to contact me, we are especially in need of reverted sisters who do not have a problem with being seen on television!

assalamualaikum wa rahmatullah

here is a brief overview of what hey have planned:

BBC Season on Islam:

The BBC is planning a special season of programmes for August 2001 to reflect and celebrate the life of Muslims in Britain today and to provide non-Muslims with a broader understanding of Islam, its history, its culture and contemporary practice in the UK.

Amongst the highlights of the season include a film about the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, in which 20,000 British Muslims take part a year; a fly-on-the-wall view of the Birmingham Central Mosque; a portrait of the life and music of Yusuf Islam, formerly the pop singer Cat Stevens; and a documentary on the issues surrounding Islamophobia. There will also be linked features into the season by regular programmes such as BBC TWO’s Home Front.

The Season’s Editor, Ruth Pitt, says: "There are around two million Muslims in Britain today and their interests and lifestyles are important to the BBC. We're fully committed to a challenging and exciting season of programmes that shows how Muslims balance their faith with their experience of contemporary life in Britain."

Deputy Editor of the Islam Season, Aaqil Ahmed, says:  “As well as making programmes about Muslims it’s also about making programmes for them. Hopefully by the end of the season people won’t just have been educated about Islam, they will also have been entertained by the programmes.”

There are two elements planned to the Islam season:

·      Broadcasts
·      Beyond the broadcasts

Beyond the broadcasts - the off-air activities:

·      BBC Learning Support aims to take the interest of audiences beyond the broadcasts by working in consultation and partnership with the Muslim community and appropriate organisations to generate, facilitate, co-ordinate and publicise community-driven materials, events or activities. It is hoped that these will develop, enrich and form an integral part of the Islam season.

The aims of the off-air activities are to maximise and build on the profile created by the broadcasts to:

·      Engage the pro-active support of Muslim and non-Muslim audiences at local,
regional & national levels, in various ways which will stimulate and encourage
     further participation and learning.

·      Maximise the impact and reach of the Islam Season in more tangible, targeted
     and appropriate ways.

·      Reinforce a better understanding of the key issues and messages of the season.

·      Develop and widen the scope of the broadcasts by exploring further issues important to the Muslim Community.

·      Further reflect & celebrate the cultural diversity and richness of the Muslim Community in the UK.

The form activities take will depend on what is most appropriate to the season and the target audience.

Examples of past activities include:
·      Publications - e.g. facts sheets, newspaper supplements, specially commissioned books, learning support information/materials.
·      Events & activities - e.g. lectures, cultural festivals, exhibitions, open door/taster sessions.
·      On-line - e.g. website information & support, learning tools.
·      Radio - interviews, discussions, phone-ins.
·      Telephone support - e.g. advice, information, events listings.

Your initial thoughts & comments:

·      Given that the focus of the season is to provide a broader understanding
of Islam and issues relating to Muslims in the wider community, and to
celebrate and reflect the contemporary life of Muslims in Britain, can you
     suggest ways of achieving this?
·      What types of appropriate activities does your organisation or your local
     community currently organise?
·      What types of activities would your organisation like to see or support as part of the season?
·      Do you know of appropriate contacts and organisations who may be interested in participating in the season?

This sounds like such a GREAT opportunity to bring Islam to the masses in this country and let them see for themselves what its really like.

Once the dates have been announced I would suggest everyone tells as many people about the programmes and the activities as possible (that includes non Muslims as well as Muslims) in order to maximise the impact of the Season.

I just found the following page on the BBC website.

The Faces of Islam programmes will include talks by Hamza Yusuf and Hakeem Olajuwon.

First programme is scheduled for 6 Aug

Nope. But is this the same Faces of Islam that was shown, say in 1997 or was it 1998? coz, if it is, I think he said smt profound, of which I can't really remember now... but certainly, a good watch. He told of how he first converted, and how his Mauritania experience was and his thoughts on Islam.

And here is the schedule of the BBC Islam Season.... (beat you to it,akhi ;))

Too bad some of them are shown on late nites... well, alhamdulillah, nevertheless.

I think so. It was made in 1999 for BBC Manchester.

Of the many interesting things he said was this idea that the world places more importance on *values* now as opposed to *virtues*.

Virtues are such that they transcend time and cultures.

For example, who in the world doesn't regard honesty as a virtue or generosity or charity?

Different countries and peoples may have different values but these virtues are universal.

The BBC Islam season: Too boring, Too little, Too late
Q News, The Muslim Magazine
Issue 329, pp 14
Dhu Al-Hijjah 1421/March 2001
http://www.q-news.com

A BBC Islam Season scheduled for summer has been criticised for its
lack of imagination and direction, failure to impact on the community and wishy-washy nature. The season, planned for the end of August, will see the screening on BBC TWO of programmes "reflecting contemporary life for Muslims in the UK today and providing non-Muslims with a broader understanding of Islam - its history, its culture and how it is practised in twenty-first century Britain."

According to a BBC press release highlights of the season include a
documentary on challenging stereotypes, a film about the annual Hajj -
the pilgrimage to Mecca, a fly-on-the-wall view of the Birmingham Central Mosque, and a portrait of Yusuf Islam, formerly the pop singer Cat Stevens. There will also be features linked into the season by regular programmes such as BBC TWO's Home Front.

Jane Root, Controller of BBC TWO says: "BBC TWO does the big ideas
differently and in seeking to show life from the inside of the modern
Muslim community the channel is representing not just those individuals but life in multi-cultural Britain today."

"There are around two million Muslims in Britain today and their
interests and lifestyles are important to the BBC," according to Ruth Pitt, the Season's Editor. "We're fully committed to a challenging and exciting season of programmes that shows how Muslims balance their faith with their experience of contemporary life in Britain. We're spending a lot of money on this season and we expect to show the best programmes in return."

The BBC is refusing to give details of the actual budget it has
allocated for the season but according to an insider it remains a fraction of what such a season deserves. "The budget is paltry if, for instance, compared to what was allocated to the Windrush Season - something the Islam Season is being compared to in the BBC publicity stuff."

While the Windrush was mostly a partnership between the BBC and the
black community in terms of both formulating the concept and actualising it, the Islam Season is entirely BBC-led with members of the Muslim community expected to merely rubber-stamp the decisions. The first official meeting between the BBC and the Muslim community was held on 29 January - barely six months before the Season. Contrary to her press statement, Ruth Pitt, the Season's Editor, told the meeting that the season could not include dramas and the other programme suggestions because "of budgetary considerations".

Other matters related to the budget is the fact that nearly half the
programmes scheduled for the season will have been made of funds
already allocated to other departments. The programme on The Mosque, for instance, was conceptualised and started long before the idea of the Islam Season was firmly accepted. The same is true of the programme A Cat Called Yusuf which is based on the life and music of Yusuf Islam to be produced by the BBC Light Entertainment department.

Of the remaining scheduled programmes only the ones on Hajj, Islamophobia and the four half hour films (which are documentaries aimed to present "intimate portraits of life in modern Britain") are to be made by the BBC specifically for the Islam Season. However, more than half of the budget is expected to be lavished on buying a three-part series titled Empires of Islam produced by a Walt Disney-owned American production company. The move is not only an affront to the BBC notion of producing its own high quality programmes but to British Muslims who include some of the best scholars and analyst of Islam in the world. A BBC Islam Season airing an American perspective of Islam rather than a British one is as relevant as Larry King
presenting Hard Talk.

According to Aaqil Ahmed, Deputy Editor of the Islam Season, as well
as making programmes "about Muslims [the Season is] also about making
programmes for them. Hopefully by the end of the season people won't
just have been educated about Islam, they will also have been entertained by the programmes."

But, to be fair, none of the programmes even approaches the
entertaining label: for Muslims the Hajj is a serious religious duty, Islamophobia is an ugly reality and the work of Mr Yusuf Islam as one of the country's leading philanthropist and educationalist is nothing but inspirational. The only possibility of entertainment is if the American programmes have been produced like a Mickey Mouse loony tune film.

Overall the feeling among the Muslim community is that the Islam
Season is very, very little too late. The whole season would not even begin to undo the damage the broadcast of such a programme like the Veil alone has done to the image of Islam and Muslims in this country. Furthermore, criticism of the Season has also focused on the fact that there seems neither will nor desire on the Beeb to ensure that the community benefits in any positive way from staging the season. Only one of the programmes is made by an independent Muslim production company. Otherwise the rest of the series has failed to create opportunities for Muslim journalists and production staff to be involved in any way in the Season - the way similar benefits
have accrued to other societies when similar programmes have been
held in the past.
