Qur'an Memorisation task 1
Kashif

assalaamu alaikum

Ibn Taymiyyah said regarding the importance of learning the Qur'an:

"As for seeking to memorize the Qur'aan then this is to be given preference over many of the things that the people consider to be knowledge, but are -in reality - either totally useless, or having little benefit. It is also to be given precedence in learning especially by those who wish to acquire knowledge of the Deen, its principles and its particulars. Since what is prescribed for such a person at this time is that he should begin by memorizing the Qur'aan, as it is the foundation of the branches of knowledge of the deen."
[Fataawaa al-Kubra (2/54-55)]

We'll start with an easy task insha'llah, but i'll forewarn you that i do hope to pick up the pace on memorisation quickly. This is just a warm up.

The memorisation for this week consists of two easy items:
1> Ayat ul-kursi [2:255]
2> The last two verses of Surah al-Baqara [2:285-286]

The sunnah teaches us to recite these two frequently, and its my hope that once we have committed them to memory, we'll never forget them due to our constant recitation of these two.

My plan is this:
- New tasks will be posted on a Sunday.
- Transliteration of the ayat will follow on the Monday.
- Wednesday i'll post up a brief tafseer of the ayaat.
- Friday i'll e-mail a 5 min test to each of the memorisers.

Insha'llah.

Sunday the marked test will be sent back. The test will be entirely voluntary and its purpose is to make some additional facts about the memorised verses stay in your head.

This is all for a good cause: to earn Allah's pleasure, so stay motivated - we don't want to reach the D/Judgment rueing the fact that we didn't grasp the opportunity to memorise seriously enough.

Kashif
Wa Salaam

PS The test will be *e-mailed* out and not posted here, so anonymous memorisers should drop me an e-mail and let me know that they're part of our team and so that i know where to send the test.

Ibn al-Uthaimeen's (rh) advice on memorisation

Question #22119:

Which books of Tafseer do you advise me to read? And with regard to memorizing Qur’aan – if a person memorizes Qur’aan then forgets it, is there any warning of punishment in this case? How should one retain what one has memorized?

Answer

Praise be to Allaah.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked this question and he replied as follows:

The sciences of the Qur’aan vary. Every mufassir who comments on the Qur’aan focuses on one aspect of these sciences. It is impossible for one tafseer to encompass all aspects of the Qur’aan.

Among the scholars are those who focus on the theoretical aspects of tafseer, like al-Zammakhshaari and others. But I think that he should think of the meaning of the aayah himself first – i.e., he should think of the meaning of the aayah – then he should check what the scholars said concerning it, because this will help him to be strong in Tafseer and not dependent on others. From the time when the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was sent until the present, the word of Allaah has always been “In the plain Arabic language” (cf. al-Shu’araa 26:195 – interpretation of the meaning).

It is necessary to refer to the tafseer of the Sahaabah, because they had the greatest understanding of its meanings; then to the books of the mufassireen among the Taabi’een. But despite that no one can ever encompass all the meanings of the words of Allaah.

What I think is the best way is for a person to think of what an aayah means, then to refer to the words of the scholars. If he finds that his view is the same, that will help him to become good in tafseer and make it easy for him. If he finds that his view is different, then he should follow that which is correct.

With regard to memorizing the Qur’aan, the way in which it is memorized varies from one person to another. Some people memorize Qur’aan aayah by aayah, i.e., they memorize one aayah, reading it two or three times, then they work at it until they have memorized it, then they memorize the following aayah, and so on until they have completed one-eighth or one-quarter of the juz’ and so on. Other people read the whole one-eighth of a juz’  and repeat it until they have memorized it. In such matters we cannot lay down a general rule, so we tell people, use whatever method suits you to memorize Qur’aan.

But it is important that you should know what you have memorized when you want to go back to it. The best way that I have seen is that if a person memorizes something on one day, he should read it again early the following morning. This is a great help in remembering what he memorized on the previous day. This is something that I have done myself and it was a great help in memorizing properly.

With regard to the warning against one who forgets, Imaam Ahmad said, “How severe the warning is,” i.e., against one who memorizes an aayah then forgets it. What is meant here is the one who neglects it until he forgets it. But if a person forgets it because of some natural reason or because of duties which he got involved in, which kept him away from revising what he mad memorized, in this case he is not guilty of sin. “Allaah burdens not a person beyond his scope” [al-Baqarah 2:286 – interpretation of the meaning].

It was reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) led his companions in prayer, and he forgot an aayah. One of his companions reminded him of it after the prayer. He said, “Why did you not remind me of it sooner?” But the one who is negligent concerning that or who turns away from it is undoubtedly a loser and deserves to be guilty of sin But the one who forgets it because he became involved in duties which Allaah has enjoined upon him, or who forgot it for some natural reason, is not guilty of anything.

NOTES FOR AYAT UL-KURSI
------------------------------

- Ayat ul-Kursi is the greatest ayah in the Qur'an:

The Prophet asked Ubay ibn Ka'b about the greatest ayah in the Book of Allah, and Ubayy answered 'Allah & His Messenger know best.' When the Prophet repeated the question several times, 'Ubayy said 'Ayat ul-Kursi.' The Prophet commented, "Congratulations for having knowledge O Abu l-Mundhir! By He in whose Hand is my soul, this ayah has a tongue and two lips with which it praisese the Kind (Allah) next to the leg of the Throne.' [Ahmad]

- Ayat ul-Kursi is a source of protection from Allah. Allah will send a guard to protect anyone who recites this before sleeping, and no Shaytan will come near him till morning. This is related in Sahih al-Bukhari.

- Ayat ul-Kursi contains the greatest Name of Allah:

Asma bint Yazib bin as-Sakan said, "I heard Allah's Messenger say about these two ayat: 'Allahu la-ilaha illa huwa al-Hayy ul-Qayoom..' [2:255] & 'Alif-Lam-Meem. Allahu la-ilaha illa huwa al-Hayy ul-Qayoom..'[3:1-2], that they contain Allah's Greatest Name." [Ahmad]

And in at-Tabarani it is reported that the Prophet said "Allah's Greatest Name, if He was supplicated with it, He answers the supplication, is in three surahs - al-Baqara, ali-`Imran & Ta-Ha."

-  The subject matter of this great ayah is the Names & Attributes of Allah: knowledge of Allah is the best knowledge that can be acquired.

- 'Al-Hayy' testifies that Allah is the Ever-Living who never dies.
- 'Al-Qayyoom' means He who sustains everyone and everything, and upon whom all of creation relies on, while He is in no need of creation and relies on nothing but himself.

- 'Neither sleep nor slumber overtakes Him' - no shortcoming, unawareness or ignorance ever touches Allah. He is aware of everything and controls everything. The Prophet said: "Allah does not sleep and it does not befit His Majesty that He should sleep..." [Muslim]

- 'Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission?' - this is similar to the ayah of Surah an-Najm: "And there are many Angels in the heavens whose intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He wills and is pleased with." [53:26]. Therefore, no one has the right to intercede for anyone else on the Day of Judgement unless (a) Allah first gives permission for intercession to be made, and (b) the one who is being interceded for is pleasing to Allah. This extends even to the Prophet who said "I wil stand under the Throne and fall in prostration, and Allah will allow me to remain in that position as much as He wills. I will thereafter be told, 'Raise your head, speak and you will beheard, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.'" The Prophet then said "He will allow me a proportion whom I will enter into Paradise." [Muslim]

- 'They will never encompass him in knowledge except that which He wills' - no one can ever acquire knowledge of Allah except by way of what He conveys to us in revelation.

- 'His Kursi extends over the Heavens and the Earth' - Ibn Abbas said "If the seven Heavens and the seven Earths were flattened and laid side by side, they would add up to the size of a ring in a desert compared to the Kursi." [Ibn Abi Hatim]

Notes for last ayahs of surah al-Baqara
----------------------------------------

Virtue of these two ayaat -

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said: "Whoever recites the last two ayat in surah al-Baqara at night, they will suffice for him." [Bukhari]

Also, Ibn Abbas narrates "While the Messenger of Allah was with Jibreel, he heard a noise from above. Jibril lifted his sight to the sky and said 'This is a door that was opened just now in heaven, and it was never opened before.' An angal came down through the door to the Prophet and said, 'Receive the good news of two lights that you have been given: the Opener of the Book (Al-fatiha) and the last asyaat in surah al-Baqara. You will not read a letter of them, but you will be granted its benefit." [Nisa'ee]

Time of revelation

These ayat at the end of the surah were revealed to the Prophet in Heaven on the night of the heavenly journey along with the command for the five prayers, and forgiveness for everyone in his ummah who did not associate anything in worship with Allah. [Muslim]

"The Messenger (Muhammad SAW) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allâh, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, 'We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers.'"

The Muslims believe in all of the Messengers and attest to the fact they they were all truthful and righteous. We do not differentiate between them by believing in some and disbelieving in others.

"Allâh burdens not a person beyond his scope." - Allah never asks a soul for that which is beyond its capability, and this demonstrates His kindness & compassion towards His creation. this abrogates the ayah that worried the sahaba: "And whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it." [2:284] Thus, Allah will not punish us for passing evil thoughts. However, to hate to have such thoughts is from imaan (faith).

"Have Mercy on Us" -, that is, 'O Lord, do not allow us to fall into error.' They say that those who commit error need three thing, (a) Allah's forgiveness for what is between Him and them, (b) that He conceals these errors from His other servants, and (c) that He grants them immunity from further error.
