INTRODUCTION:

Jibreel's Hadith:-
-         Teaches adaab of inquiring knowledge
-         When you go to seek knowledge of Deen, you must be in the
best of attire (Jibreel's clothes were clean and beautiful).
-         Reason: `Ilm of the Deen is sacred

Three Levels (Jibreel asked Prophet (s.a.w), "akhbirni al-islam?,
akhbirni al-Imaan?, akhbirni al-Ihsaan?)"

ISLAM: at this level, a person is called a "MUSLIM"
-         Fulfills the bear minimum (compulsory aspects of the Deen)

IMAAN: at this level, a person is called a "MO'MIN"
-         Better than a Muslim

IHSAAN: at this level, a person is called a "MOHSIN"
-         The highest level
-         To worship Allah (s.w.t) as if you see Him and if you cannot see
Him, be sure that He (s.w.t) sees you.
-         Mushahadah: seeing the signs (ayaat) of Allah (s.w.t)
-         Muraqabah: every-vigilant of one's self and one's practice of the
Deen
-         Believer at this level is ever mindful about what he/she says with
his/her tongue.  "Mercy of Allah is ever-close to a Mohsin (people who
do good in all situations)"
(Qur'aan).

`IBAAD-UR-RAHMAAN:

Surah Furqaan (ch. 25), verses 60 to 77 talks about a particular group of
Believers and their 13 characteristics  Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan.

Surah Furqaan, Ayaat 61-62:
"Blessed be He Who has placed in the heaven big stars, and has placed
therein a great lamp (sun), and a moon giving light.  And He it is Who
has put the night and the day in succession, for such who desires to
remember or desires to show his gratitude.
"

-This is the way He (s.w.t) organizes life, so reflect and ponder on this
and be thankful to Allah (s.w.t).

The Quraish asked the Prophet (s.a.w) a question: "What is the
Rahmaan (and other attributes) you are telling us about?"
 The
polytheists of Quraish had idols representing each of the attributes.

-Allah (s.w.t) answered them by giving the description of the chosen
servants of Al-Rahmaan.

[color=purple]Characteristics of `Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan:-

1. Their disposition during the day:

"And the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are those who walk on
the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them
(with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness."

(25:63)

-         They walk around this earth with humility
-         Humility not because of weakness, but due to Taqwa

2. When ignorant people would confront them with ignorant talk, do
not allow themselves to be dragged down to their level.

"And the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are those who walk on
the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them
(with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness."

(25:63)

-         They simply say "salaam" and leave
-         Because Allah (s.w.t) has honored the tongue with "la illaaha
illAllah"
and such tongues do not use foul words and speech.
-         They are humble and focused in `Ibaadat

3. Their disposition during the night:

"And those who spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and
standing."
(25:64)

-         They spend their night prostrating to Allah (s.w.t) and standing
up in the night.
-         In Surah Muzammil Allah (s.w.t) tells the Prophet (s.a.w) to
stand up in the night and recite Qur'aan.
-         `Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan understand this and are prepared to receive
the guidance and reward.
-         Allah (s.w.t) does not give the Nur to those who do not deserve.
-         They sleep only when they have to sleep.
-         For Prophet (s.a.w), Qiyaam was obligatory, and for the sahabah
it was Sunnah (not obligatory), but they still never missed it.
-         An example is the household of Abu Hurairah (ra):

The daughter of Abu Hurairah said that during the night, her father
would stand up one third of the night, then her mother would stand up
another one third of the night and she would stand up the other one-
third of the night.  When her mother passed away, her father would
spend half of the night worshipping and she would spend the other half
of the night in worship.  So in her house, there would always be
someone worshipping Allah (s.w.t).

-         Another example is that of Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahimahullah),
who was a Tabiyeen:

For forty years, Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahimahullah) prayed salatul Fajr
with the same wudu` he would have for Isha because he never slept
from Isha and Fajr (would be engaged in worship).

-         Ultimately, when we return to Allah (s.w.t) on the Day of
Judgment, it is our worship that will count.

4. What do the `Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan say in their prayers?

"And those who say: "Our Lord! Avert from us the torment of Hell.
Verily! Its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment."

(25:65)

-         Even though they spend their nights praying, they would still ask
Allah (s.w.t) for protection against the fire.

"Evil indeed it (Hell) is as an abode and as a place to dwell." (25:66)

-         Prophet (s.a.w) said that if anyone knew of the many ways a
person can enter jahannam, no one would feel safe from fire. (Sahih
Bukhari).
-         Prophet (s.a.w) used to make the following dua`a seven times
after each Fard salaat:

"Allahuma ajirni min an-naar." (Transl. "O Allah, save me from the
fire"
).

5. "And those, who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor
niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)."
(25:67)

-         Prophet (s.a.w) said that even if you were to spend gold as much
as Jabal Uhud in the way of Allah (with the correct intention), it would
not be extravagant.
-         The intricate description of the `Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan: spending in
the way of Allah (s.w.t).
-         An example from the sahabah:

Abu Dharr al-Ghifaari (RA), after every fardh salaat, would give
sadaqah (although he was not rich).  He was asked by other sahabah,
"why are you doing this?"  He replied, "Do you not read the Qur'aan"
Whenever in the Qur'aan Allah (s.w.t) commands us to pray, it is
immediately followed by a verse on giving sadaqah.?

-         Birr: Taqwa/Piety
-         In Surah Baqarah, Allah (s.w.t) says:

"It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of
obedience to Allāh, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or)
west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in
Allāh, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his
wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-
Masākin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to
set slaves free, performs As-Salāt (Iqāmat-as-Salāt), and gives the
Zakāt, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are
As-Sābirin (the patient ones, etc.) in extreme poverty and ailment
(disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the
people of the truth and they are AlMuttaqūn (pious - see V.2:2) "

(2:177)

6. "And those who invoke not any other ilāh (god) along with Allāh,
nor kill such life as Allāh has forbidden, except for just cause, nor
commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive
the punishment."
(25:68)

-         They do not call/surrender/worship others, except Allah (s.w.t).

7. "And those who invoke not any other ilāh (god) along with Allāh,
nor kill such life as Allāh has forbidden, except for just cause, nor
commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive
the punishment."
(25:68)

-         They don't take the life of another person except with
justification of Shari`ah.

-         Prophet (s.a.w) said, "Whoever kills a person without a just
cause, it is as if they killed an entire nation and whoever saves a
person's life it is as if they saved an entire nation."

8. "And those who invoke not any other ilāh (god) along with Allāh,
nor kill such life as Allāh has forbidden, except for just cause, nor
commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive
the punishment."
(25:68)

-         They do not commit illegal actions such as adultery and
fornication.

"The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and
he will abide therein in disgrace;"
(25:69)

-         And those who commit them have done a serious violation and
punishment is great with Allah (s.w.t) " not only in this Dunya but also
in the Akhirah, will forever be in hellfire."

9. "Except those who repent and believe (in Islāmic Monotheism), and
do righteous deeds, for those, Allāh will change their sins into good
deeds, and Allāh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.  And whosoever
repents and does righteous good deeds, then verily, he repents towards
Allāh with true repentance."
(25:70-71)

-         Among the conditions of Tawbah are that one must be sincere in
tawbah, one must regret/have remorse of the wrong they did and if the
wrong action infringed upon the rights of another person, he/she must
seek forgiveness of that person.

-         If an `alim does a mistake, he must openly seek forgiveness of
the people.
-         There are infinite degrees and levels of seeking forgiveness of
Allah (s.w.t).
-         `Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan seek forgiveness for deeds that were omitted
(ex. Missed tahajjud, ishraaq, etc.)
-         Sins of Omission: neglected actions (ex. Nawafil salaat, extra
fasts, tahajjud, etc.)

These actions become neglected some of us say, "Oh, it's not fardh so I
Don't have to do it."
But these actions fill in for the mistakes and
shortcomings of our Faraa'id (obligatory actions).

-         Best actions: done on a small scale but done consistently.
-         We must try to make small increments of change, become
consistent in it and then do more change (for the better). (ex. Nawafil,
tahajjud, etc.)

10. "And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some
evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity."
(25:72)

-         They will not bear false witness nor be party to vain
conversations (ex. Gheeba, nameema, etc.)
-         The ear and the eyes are channels to the heart and the tongue
manifests (interprets) what is in the heart.

11. "And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some
evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity."
(25:72)

-         If they happen to come in company of those who are saying
wrong things, they will leave.
-         At the beginning of everyday in the morning, the organs in the
body say to the tongue, "O tongue, fear Allah (s.w.t) in matters of the
tongue.  If you are upright, we are upright, if you are crooked, we are
also crooked."
 (hadith)

12. "And those who, when they are reminded of the Ayāt (proofs,
evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord, fall not
deaf and blind thereat."
 (25:73)

-         There were sahabah that would lose consciousness upon hearing
some verses from the Qur'aan.
-         The Prophet (s.a.w), in his dhikr mentioned every night for
tahajjud, the following:

"Allahuma an-naarul haqq wa jannatul haqq." (transl. "O Allah, the fire
is true and the heaven is true (i.e. real).
)

-         If this sinks into our hearts, we would realize that this Dunya is
Daar-ul-`Amal and in the Hereafter, we will give account of what we
did (in this Dunya).

13. "And those who say: "Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and
our offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders
for the Muttaqūn" (pious - see V.2:2 and the footnote of V.3:164)."

(25:74)

-         The Prophet (s.a.w) said that the dua`a is the pivot/focus of one's
worship. (Bukhari)
-         Our dua` tell us what we are.
-         The dua` of the Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan: "Our Lord! Bestow on us
from our wives and our offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes,
and make us leaders for the Muttaqūn".
-         "Comfort of our eyes": spouses that are pleasing because of their
practice of Islam, good character and worship of Allah (s.w.t).
-         The focus of the `Ibaad-ur-Rahmaan:- they want those they love
to be like them and they want to take them to heaven along with them.
