college is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fun.. it's not high school at all... it's just like this big place where everyone goes and everyone can get something different.. kinda like a buffet.. and while ur in line u can meet alot of cool people.... (can u tell im hungry:))

what's the worse that can happen? you don't get into the classes that you want...but that's ok cause you learn and register earlier (se7en!!) the next semester....or ur schedule is weird one semester...or u have bad professors or hard classes... u'll learn the best way to study and what best works for u...

2 things of advice that someone told me b4 i started uni that helped me out ALOT!!!

1. every semester take at least 1 class that you will really like/enjoy  -- like art or psych or world religions..something cool and fun

and

2. take LOTS of notes in class

also i'd recommend getting involved with some clubs and stuff... like MSA or whatever your major is.. there's alot of cool stuff out there...

jannah u must have forgotten who u were talking to :) i was like in 18 clubs at The High....i fear i may risk burnout....
but i do like the buffet analogy...:)

You can come down with the flu for the first two weeks of college and still go to class-- sleep there, come home-- sleep there. And then when your head finally clears up and you can smell the roses once again, your realize that it's not worth going now cuz you already missed so much and can't stand having a B average and you drop three of your classes except for one.

That happened to me. So then the next semester you take 18 hours of classes and when summer roles around you are burned out and can't take any classes during summer and so you spend your summers at home sulking with nothing to do. And then you come down with the flu again.

This time I am taking those flu shots.

...that same thing happened to someone else i knew....so recently i ended up taking some of those preventative shots and i had a really bad reaction to a tetanus shot.  it ended up looking like i had a really big muscle on my right shoulder :)

worst thing that can ever happen?
getting stuck with "sucky" profs..(n if it's really bad, they try to mess up ur academ record)
or finding out that u REALLLLLY *HATE* the class or the work u have to do in it but it's something u HAVE to take since it's related to your major or something...

all that can happen.. :P
it's not bad...usually oje over fears something...but once ur in it, u'll find out that whatever u were afraid of, was totally a piece of cake..or not as scary as ur imaginative mind made it seem like! :P
make cool duas n insha'allah ur on ur way :) (extra cool if u've got friends who could calm ur nerves the first day or something..if ur nervous)

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

Se7en, my GOD, I'm so much older than u!  U hear me on that, Jannah?  Ok ok, I know the age thing has *nothing* to do with anything :-) tee hee...
I'm feeling a little nostalgic after reading these replies, I wish I could go to college all over again!  But getting advice on not only the best/worst things, but also the things u would or wouldn't do if u could go back (from the alumni) may be beneficial, too, insha'Allah.

Absolute best thing about college:
Finding the right crowd to hang with.  I, like many others, went away to college, so having Muslim roommates was def a blessing, walhamdulillah.  And if u go to a big enough school, u have no excuse to not find the right friends.  General rule of thumb, which I know is drilled into everyone's head: hang with those u want to be like.  And if there's not a strong MSA already established (why r u going there?), help start one.  It's kinda like sadaqa jariyya.  It's a lot easier these days to advocate for at least equal "rights" for Muslims on campus than it was even a few years back (eg., getting halal food served on campus and holidays off, prayer rooms, establishing Muslim chaplains or a voice for the Muslims on campus, campus-wide MSA newsletters, etc).

Worst thing:
If, God forbid, u fall into the wrong crowd.  I guess not going with ur gut and majoring in something u have no interest in, doesn't help either.  Trust me, if u plan on going to grad/post-grad school, the specific courses u take as an under-grad matter a lot less than how well u did in classes u enjoyed and got something out of, wAllahu'alim.  And in most cases, u can major in just about anything (ok, not *anything*), and still pursue something completely different after u graduate (re: grad school, work, etc).  From my experience, undergrad was great for building a stronger foundation (Islamically, socially), but grad school was more interesting in terms of coursework, since by its very nature, ur concentrating on ur interest.  Not that I'm advocating grad school...

What I would do if I could do it all over again:
Def help form a sisters' MSA...sooooo many more things would have actually gotten done!  (no offense, bros)
And just b/c ur overloaded with classes and exams, etc, doesn't mean u can't put time into furthering ur deen.  Some excellent advice I remember receiving was to put aside set time to learn more Qur'aan, ahadith, etc.  Balance is key; think of how many hours ur studying secular knowledge?
Also, have a Muslim representative in every major student organization, particularly "government" body or policy making orgs.  These groups can help decide where funding goes...plus, we need a far reaching voice, and it ain't gonna be heard if the Muslims on campus r perceived as "one-tracked", minding our own business, ya know?

What I wouldn't do if I could do it all over again:
Umm...not study?  jk :)  There's a time for hangin out, and there's a time for studying.  Again, balance is key.  Also, I wish I had taken more Arabic/Islamic studies courses as my electives (or even major, sheesh).  Take advantage!

slm,

sofia!!! thank God someone else that feels the way I do... i really miss college too it was so much fun... i feel so old when all these younguns are going off this sept... but excited for them too... there is so much ahead of them... i would agree that the crowd you hang out with is the utmost importance... your friends make you who you are so look for people who are serious about their islam and want to further themselves....the thing i miss the most now working is just seeing a muslim face during the day in the halls and saying salam...

sister(s)

don't worry about college (university we call it up here)

it's not a big problem, just a lot more ideas

as I once read, "IT is an All-you-can-think buffet"

of ocurse, realize that it is like the world, ppl doing wrong things, weird ideas , funny habits and all walks of life

my suggestion is DON'T get too too involved

stay at arm's length... It's good to be motivated, but stay focused as well,

like, I don't mean only in studies, but also, make one or two clubs your interest,

if you join so much, there's such a diversion of energy in my opinion

crowd is everything

try to be around muslims so you all can encourage each other

also be aware that MANY different types of muslims are out there

sects, schools, cultures, queers, druggies, all who claim the banner of ISlam,

sp Watch for that...

otherwise

DON't WORRY

It's not that big... just relax. 1st year is almost like grade 9... people are still immature in a grown-up way.. asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

ooh no..do i hear people dissin the Village!..heh..dont u be dissin my hometown now!..heh

college life..is bleeh..like everyone said..SOO much better than High SChool, but wut ive realized is that its harder but not harder. U'll  kno wut i mean once ur there college newbies...
the good/bad thing is that u can totally be uninvolved and not feel wierd. IN HS if u werent in certain clubs, etc u were teh loner who didtn do anything. But in College if ur the person that is not in anything..it makes no difference,..except ur just bored all the time. he he

ofcourse one suggestion..SLEEP AS MUCH AS U CAN NOOW!. and ofcourse join ur MSA..

The people seemed friendlier in college, and classes were weird, they were optional, you just had to show up for the midterm and final and that was your grade.  I thought that was really strange but I guess some of you that did it a lot in high school (ditching classes) will enjoy that aspect of it.  I do remember my 1st day of class.  I certainly didn't feel like a freshman, and people were pretty cool to one another.

I've noticed that the village people don't diss the Albanians.

bhaloo, did u go to NYU? NYIT?

College is definitely cooler than HS.  For one thing, grades are ALL relative :)   You could get a B on all your tests, do not-so great on homework, improve a little on the final and end up with an A in the class. (Even if your number average was a B!)  If you go to class, and talk to your professor often--- VERY VERY IMPORTANT!! They'll usually cut you some slack. And then there is the ever popular grading curve.. Ahhh, the grading curve... :)  I once had an econ class where the class average on teh test was a 44, so he scaled it so that if you had a 64 or higher, you got an A!!!! :o:o:o  So you could have failed, and still had an A!  I had like a 150 average int that class!! :)

But whenever you have any concerns, take it up with the professors.  Make SURE the professor knows your name.  This is not good when they pick on people in class, but its great come grading time.  College is very subjective!

Yay, only one more semester left for me Insha'Allah!! :):)
Take Care,
Wassalam,

duuude, sis, i WISH!!!!!

n re grading curve's only something the lil hs kiddos/newly freshmen ask for...or unless if it's one of those GE classes that aren't important...

Nope. :)

Speaking of curves, this one upper divison engineering course I took, I got a 55 on the exam, but the average was a 30, lol, hehehehe.  I saw a few people get 5s and 10s.  I'm not sure if anyone got a negative score. :)
