Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatallahi Wa Barakatuhu

I thought that insha'allah I would do a short intro about myself.  My name is Dina and I live in Houston, Texas.  Just graduated from college finally, alhamdulillah!!!  Majored in psychology and insha'allah plan to continue onto grad school for my masters in counseling.  From everything that I have read from this board so far all I can say is masha'allah and may Allah reward all of you for being there for one another and all the interesting and informative information that you provide.  Ameen.

Salam,
dina

Welcome Sister Dina! I think you'll like it here, I find myself coming multiple times a day, hehe. ;-D Mashallah, I think it's wonderful that you're going into counseling.  I've been playing with the idea of going into Psychiatry actually, and my fellowship this summer has been on that topic- it's really fascinating!  And I think Muslims really need counselors who can understand where they are coming from.  Good luck with your studies!

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatallahi Wa Barakatuhu

Jazaka'allah Kharun for all of your wonderful words of welcome:)  Insha'allah I shall enjoy my stay here and be able to contribute something useful to the board every now and then and hopefully not get entirely too addicted of which I may be in danger of being, lol!

I admit that yes I was a lurker before becoming member but in my defense that was only because it took a couple of days for me to be able to become a complete citizen:)  Insha'allah you won't use it agains me:)

Salam
Dina

Hmmmmmm....I wonder what "Religious OCD" would be like? Probably, if u start praying 50 times a day instead of 5, repeating each of ur prayer 10 times or like saying salaam to the same person again and again until he/she starts considering u a psycho. case, or maybe one goes through the same surah again and again, while reciting Quran, so many times that he/she finally learns it by heart.
I know what OCD exactly is but trying to imply it in religion! Allah(swt) knows better.

Wassalam.

as salaamu alaykum,

I was watching this documentary on some wierd channel in french.. (It was like 3 am and I was hyper on pepsi, don't ask) and it was on psychological diseases in "developing countries".. and it showed this Muslim woman in egypt who was suffering from this OCD of cleanliness..

She was talking to the psychologist about how much disgust she feels when she has her period, and how she takes pills that prevent her from having it (the psychologist, who wasn't Muslim from what I could see, blamed this on Islam and it's "aversion to women's natural biology" -- obviously she is unfamiliar with the many ahadeeth on Rasulullah [saw]'s interaction with 'Aisha when she was menstruating, including lying under the same sheet with her, letting her comb his hair, and reclining in her lap and reciting Qur'an!)

And she mentioned how before salah she used to like to make wudu though she may already have it.. and then before every salah she felt compelled to made wudu.. and it kept escalating to the point that she made ghusl before every salah!!!

At a tazykiya retreat we had a lesson on ta'dheem or reverence for Allah's laws.. and one indication of reverence is not going to extremes in following them.. for example being lax with obeying them, like habitually leaving salah to the last ten minutes - this is not haram, but it shows a lack of reverence or ta'dheem.. and he mentioned that it's the same when you move to an extreme in the other direction, when the commands and prohibitions are subjected to extreme actualizations..  that both of these indicate a type of inbalance and that the farther you move from the center, no matter in what direction, the harder it will be to see the center clearly..

one of the examples he gave was of continuously repeating wudu to make sure you have perfected it.. which reminded me of the sister I saw in the documentary, though her intention behind it wasn't "religious" per se..

I don't know man.. I think it's very easy to fall into extremes in *everything* and thats why we need to be moderate, an ummatan wassata..

as the islamic rap goes -- "we're a nation of moderation walhamdulillah"

can you tell it's 3 am and I'm a bit hyper now :) ;)

take care y'all

wasalaamu alaykum :)

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Welcome to the board Dina ;-)

I hope you find your feet quickly ;-)
I don't know man.. I think it's very easy to fall into extremes in *everything* and thats why we need to be moderate….
There is a time and a place for everything.

One of the problems with falling into extremes is that you tend not to realise it until you're there. Developing a sense of awareness of your own actions and a sense of balance is very important.

Whoa

Can you imagine how much she must be forking out in moisturising cream? ;-)

Seriously though, that really is a bit scary
