slm Whoever said that you gain 6lbs after stepping onto campus is soo right! I gained the 6lbs after two years on campus - with the usual fastfood for lunch, drinking more coca cola than water and snacking on cookies etc. The plan of action is gaining motivation to achieve a set goal each week by establishing regular exercise... Any encouragement from y'all will be appreciated. Motivation levels are very lowww. :( wlm Zara |

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullah :-)
Whoever said that you gain 6lbs after stepping onto campus is soo right!
Errr... my weight stayed constant when I was at uni throughout those 3 years, though people back at home did say I lost weight... (I guess it's more of loss of inches)
Any encouragement from y'all will be appreciated. Motivation levels are very lowww.
Errr... I was a poor student, so I was very prudent with what I spend... and that means careful expenditure on food, for I would need the money for other uni stuff and travelling expenditures like going to camps and such. Oh yes.. bills and rents! ( Ugh! but I do miss uni days :( ) But if U want motivation... erm... one of my biggest motivation is Sheikh Hamza Yusuf's tape on Food for Thought. Just listen to it... I was really motivated, mashaALlah... and it's good if U have a group of friends to help motivate each other, especially if U live in the same house. I mean, if U do live away from family.... I don't know ukhti... motivations and the drive comes from within... always try and keep our iman intact and on high, for the drive from Allah, would help us achieve many things, inshaAllah. If U're active in your MSA (I assume you're American?) then U would certainly need a lot of energy... not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well... and when Ur spirit is well fed, with solah, fasting, Qur'an reading etc, and U'll find that U're closer to Allah, then I'd think one would be more motivated to do other things. Like keeping your body fit. U gotta tell yourself that this is something which you have to do, coz our body is an amanah from Allah. Espeially being women, we need to take care of it for a greater purpose....motherhood. Err... sorry if I'm rambling... I'm very sleepy right now.... wallahua'lam |

Salam:) Oh no!!!! I feel so bad for you! A whole six pounds?? That's like a whole person! Calm down..six pounds is nothing girl. If you want to exercise...do soemthing that you can keep up on a permanent basis. Don't overdo it the first few days and never do it again. Do something with friends..that always keeps me into it. My husband and I do a lot of exercise together which makes thing a lot more fun. I love cooking healthy foods. I never fry anything. I steam cook things instead. A healthy and active lifestyle makes me more motivated at school and work. Girls...don't obsess about your weight. Exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle..not so that you can be a size 2. Some girls are naturally more curvy than others..that's what's healthy:) wasalam |

Here's my 2 cents on working out :) First of all, 6 lbs over 3 years is not a big deal! BUT, it is a good idea to be healthy and active throughout life, so it's great that you're thinking of it now. Here are my tips: - try not to think of exercising as a means to an ends, like being 10 pounds lighter or whatever. Doing that makes it seem like just another thing to check off your daily list of things to do and your motivation will droop eventually. Instead, try to incorporate it into an overall healthy lifestyle. Be active, eat well, have a positive attitude, that sort of thing. - find an exercise that you like to do. THis may take some time and experimentation. - Water. Water water water water water :) - This is the hard one, but try and work out first thing in the morning. This boosts your metabolism straightaway and gets it out of the way, too. Good luck! Sparrow |

[slm] If you can work out while you watch TV, it really maximizes your time. I don't have a lot of time to watch tv or movies, so if i do, i work out (usually run on the elliptical runner) and it makes the time go by really fast! Can you imagine how many sit-ups and push-ups and leg-raises and those funny exercises for your bottom you could do in one episode of ER? You'd be buff by the end of the season! ;-D [wlm] Ruqayyah |

slm :( I ditched my car 2 weeks ago, well gave it to someone to borrow so that I can use my two feet to take me place to place. I have started doing sit-ups. I go for a thirty minute walk - well yesterday was a trip to the shopping centre and back...Drinking more water is still pending. someone said we should drink eight glasses first thing in the morning but I don't think my bladder can cope with soo much water at one time! I have to give up drinking cola.... thanks for the advice - I have a long way to go and i need to boost the motivation - insha'allah wlm |

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullah :) Ooh! U're a Brit! :):):) Well, it's ISoc, then... not MSA.
I have to give up drinking cola....
well, just think of what it can do to the toilet bowls......................... if its business ethics doesn't bother you. ;) Take care, sis... and all the best. One thing about losing weight is to cut down your sugar intake too. coz sugar= energy = calories = fat = cola. U might find this !CALORIES! helpful, inshaAllah. wassalam :-) |

Salaam, 6 lbs in 3 years is really nothing. Just wait till you get married, thats when all the weight comes on. Just imagine not gaining any weight for 5-6 years, plus or minus a few pounds, then gaining 15 pounds in less then a year! Lets just say thats depressing. Alhamdullilah i've stayed stable for some time now, but it tooke awhile. For some reason people force you to eat beyond your limits after you are married, and you do it not to insult anyone, and you get lazy which equals massive weight gain. So this is a warning to all those unmarried girls out there, either prepare yourself so you won't be shocked, or try your hardest not to get lazy afterwards. If you are thinking it won't happen to you, just watch out! |

One really good way to get away from junk food is to read about what's in it, how processed it is, the state of the factories etc. There's a terrific book entitled FAST FOOD NATION that I recommend. Also, I would recommend trying to find healthy, tasty subsitutes for junk food. They do exist! That said, everything in moderation is ok. I've had a love affair with Fritos for years...can't keep them in the house or I'll eat the whole bag. So what I do is treat myself to them every couple of months. Sparrow |

Insha'allah the cookies will become a rare treat :) As for exercise I do alot of walking now that I don't have my car. Also I work real long hours and don't have time to each as much junk food as I have done in the past....Still room for loadsa improvement and I need to increase the sit-ups to 25+ wlm Zara |

As-salam-ualakum, This is a problem I'm grappling with now too. I've had a child and you don't really start eating for two until you *have* to eat your child's left overs and your own food of course! But inshahallah I've found that if you make it part of your routine, like say first thing in the morning, or as another sister mentioned while watching your favorite show it helps a lot. And I'm really bad at moderation so I have to go cold turkey, like quitting chocolate and soda completely, that way I'm cutting down like 99.99% of snacks available but I can still have that much needed sugar rush with a doughnut or something once in a while, or substitute fruit. Oh, the thing that really did it for me is Jane Fonda, old school but works like a charm, inshahallah :) Wasalam, Tayyaba |

slm :) perhaps i'm a bit skeptical....for the last month or soo i have eaten fruit until lunch. followed by lunch and then dinner after maghrib prayer... i also increased my work hours to 10 hrs a day (not including breaks or travel time) so yep reducing your calories and increasing exercise does play a big role in maintaining a healthy weight.... hope y'all feel a bit more encouraged. wlm Zara |

Assalaamu-alaikum Zara The only thing i can say to motivate you is if you keep going the way you are, your gona need a wheel barrow to keep your fat in while you walk around! Not a pleasant site! Anyway if you wanna loose weight take up something fun and exciting like boxing, kick boxing. Dont do any off that girly AEROBIC stuff, you'll get bored with that pretty quick! Also do a bit with weights, light weights just to tone up, and use the boxing/boxercise(girly stuff) or aerobics to burn the fat. If you only burn the fat, your body will have a flat look, so you should do light workouts with weights to avoid that! And cut out or reduce the fatty foods you eat. You aint american are you? If so, your a lost cause! Those guys just grow bigger and bigger! |
